I have a hefty deposit for a school due next week, but I'm expecting to hear from another school sometime in the same week. My plan so far is to send in the deposit for school A and if I hear good news from school B within a few days, I would cancel the check I sent to school A 😀. My question is, if I do manage to cancel check before the school cashes it, would I still be somehow held accountable for the money? like can they penalize me or mess with my credit or something? because I believe they would then be charged a fee for the bounced check.

Thanks!

Call your bank and see what they think. I'm sure they'll be thrilled.

Use a search function and you'll find a recent nearly identical thread from not too long ago.

Cancelling a check and having it bounce due to insufficient funds are two entirely different things. Call the school and tell them you have changed your mind and have cancelled the check. Then call the bank and cancel it. Done.

Prepare to get flamed by the people on here who think this is somehow immoral/unethical/equivilant to kicking puppies.
