I'm taking my MCAT this April. I'm a Colorado resident, a former Washington resident, and I have family that works for Creighton. I have about 50/50 MD to DO right now and want to keep my list under 25 schools. Any to add/eliminate?

without an MCAT it's really hard to put a list together. For example, without an MCAT, I would remove all MD schools from your list as with your GPA I don't think your competitive for MD schools. My opinion, you would need 34-35 MCAT equivalent to change this. Either way, I would avoid State schools. Apply to mostly private, unbiased schools. So I would knock off MSU, Oregon, and Washington right off the bat.

Actually, there's a decent number of schools with 3.3 within their range. They are:

Florida Atlantic University Schmidt College of Medicine
Drexel University College of Med
New York Medical College
Medical University of South Carolina College of Med
University of Arizona College of Medicine
Virginia Commonwealth University School of Med
Virginia Tech Carilion School of Med
University of South Carolina School of Medicine
University of Mississippi School of Medicine
University of Louisville School of Medicine
Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine
University of Kentucky College of Medicine
Marshall University Joan C Edwards School of Medicine
UC Davis School of Medicine
UC Riverside School of Medicine
University of Arkansas for Med Sci College of Med
University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine
Eastern Virginia Medical School
Albany Medical College
University of Tennessee Health Sci Center College of Med
Frank H. Netter at Quinnipiac University
University of Illinois College of Medicine
Tulane University School of Medicine
The Brody School of Med at East Carolina University
Cooper Medical School of Rowan University
Meharry Medical College
Mercer University School of Med
Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
The Commonwealth Medical College
Southern Illinois University School of Medicine
University of New Mexico School of Medicine
Morehouse School of Med
Howard University College of Medicine

Note, however, that you'd be bottom of their range, and so unless you are URM or totally kill the MCAT you should plan on mostly DO with a few of your favorite MD from these list as reaches

Most of these schools are public institutions with heavy in-state bias skewing the GPA range. For example, your list includes Florida and California schools that offer little to basically zero interviews to OOS residents regardless of GPA or MCAT. OP is a Colorado resident. Even with a killer MCAT the OP is not likely competitive at 1/2 of this list just because of in state bias

Please check your list again. You CANNOT apply to UMC unless you are a MS resident. You need to really research more than average stats.

Edit: This also goes for Morehouse, Tennessee, and Meharry.

Oh I totally agree, OP needs to find the few that are actually decent options to apply to after considering historically black or in state etc, I just copy/pasted that really quick out of my school data set for all places with a 10th percentile of 3.34 cGPA or lower

With regard to the MCAT, you do need to rock it to offset your GPA. My GPA is similar to yours and my MCAT is similar to the range recommended. I would probably get rid of Oregon and Wisconsin off your list as they have high OOS biases. There's only one school on your list that I got an interview from and was accepted, so it is possible!

Do you have a reason why your GPA is lower? Maybe you can work that into your application as well. I had a good reason-I was not pre-med then! It's worked for some schools and not others.

you should add Rocky Vista University
since you're in CO you should attend one of their campus tours

Rocky Vista is about ten minutes from my parents house. I don't like how it is the only for profit school in the country though...

Combination of not being committed to med school my freshman and sophomore years, a major switch, and working two jobs during my harder pre reqs.

Also, ECU is NC-exclusive, if memory serves me right. I think Meharry and Howard are usually for URM applicants only.

OP, I get you- I'm in a similar spot for next cycle. Kick the MCAT's booty and then things will open up for you. DO schools would be more accepting of your GPAs; Rocky Vista is in-state for you, and it can't hurt to try. You can do this! Good luck.

Look at the avg's for these schools and their matriculants. Many of these are mission based or highly state-specific. And forget about the UCs even if you're a CA resident.

OP, I don't consider a 3.3 GPA to be competitive for an MD school, unless you live in a state with one of these schools. You're fine for DO schools.

What are your thoughts on Rocky Vista?

Without an MCAT, it's hard to advise. Your GPAs are not competitive for MD schools, alas.

But on geography alone, here's my list:

Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University
Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin
New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine
Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine
University of Colorado School of Medicine (maybe)
Western Michigan University School of Medicine
Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine
Any of the Touros
Any of the VCOMs
MUCOM
DMU
KCUMB
AZCOM
ACOM
AT Still
PCOM

The for profit thing doesn't seem to be a big deal. I was really impressed when I visited.

they're also starting a research track which sounds pretty interesting.

I got More House and Georgia Medical College confused, though I haven't heard of a lot of people getting in from out of state.

Meharry serves primarily URMs and takes almost no one out of state.

Although Howard Univ have a lot of URM students, it does not necessarily mean that they ONLY accept URM students. They want students who have a strong background in working with the underserved population and have also been involved in some sort of research. I was recently accepted to Howard Univ and I am Filipino (not considered URM). My GPA and my MCAT are not great and I'm sure many of the previous posters on this thread would have deemed it "not good enough for MD schools".... so I will not attribute my acceptance to my numbers alone. I would not count Howard out of your list unless you have nothing in your application that demonstrates you want to work with underserved populations as a future physician. Good luck!
