???Anyone else an "older" pre-med student???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
33 years old here. I figure by the time I graduate from school/residency, medicare disbursements will shrink to all time lows, we'll have socialized medicine, cancer and all forms of chronic illnesses will have been cured and aliens will have landed 🙂

Then we will have to treat the Aliens as well as humans! LOL. I am a huge Science Fiction/Fantasy fan by the way!😍

can the make you reveal your age? I know they ask for a DOB on the application, but can they legally make you submit this info.? Then again, it is against the law to discriminate against someone on the basis of age. Good luck to you!

I will matriculate this fall and turn 34 shortly thereafter. You are not too old, and you already have valuable experience going into it that will give you a great head start. Go for it. You will run into discrimintation. Ironically, the most discrimination you will get will probably be mostly from other women. My wife originally wanted to be a psychiatrist, until she decided that she really didn't like science and math, so she changed to straight psychology. When she was trying for premed, many women kept telling her she should just be a nurse instead. 🙄 Just ignore the idiots that tell you not to do it. It will get easier, especially after you get an acceptance. 👍

I know. Some women can be the worst with the jealously. In regards to your wife not going into med school due to the math and science, I always tell my students (Adjunct at Community College) to not let Math especially stop you from fulfulling your dreams. There are always extra study guides, tutoring, tapes in the Library, etc. to get one through it. I feel my downfall is Physics but I tricked myself into "liking" it. I received tutoring and told myself it was kinda like Chemistry (I love Chem). I do not "love" Math but made myself commit to the time and challenge.

The science element is huge although someone passionate of the psychological field may find science interesting. They are coorelated in many repects. I wish her all the luck. You never know, she may go for med school later on. No matter what I wish you and her all the best. A Physician and Psychologist make an awesome partnership! Mentally and Physically😉 !

I am definitely going to look into this conference. I am from Chicago which makes it nice and close to home.
There are many of us SDNers that lurk over at OPM who will be there this year and have gone in the past. I can say from attending past conferences, that there is a WEALTH of information and knowledge shared. That organization is great community! 🙂

I'm so happy to find this site, there's a lot of useful info. I'm also 39 and just got my AS degree in Computer programming from local CC. I'm trying to look for a good speedy path to a DO school(get a BS degree which included premed courses to save time). There are two programs that I'm considering: 1/Biological Science-Biomedical Track, 2/Biomedical Engineering
Is it a good idea? Please advise
Thanks.

My opinion, depends on what your interests are in. Most of the biomedical engineering programs are known to be pretty intensive. And I'm more of a biochem/micro girl than engineering so I'd go with the bio degree with a biomedical track just because I know that would be the easier course of action than a bunch of math/physics classes :scared: Compare the two degrees and what the different classes that you are taken to what your interests are. I think the bio degree with a biomedical track would be fine. Just my opinion though! 😀 :luck:

Mshheadoc, thank you for quick answer. Do you know if we can get some clinical experience that included in Bio Science training program? because I'm now working in a field which not related to medical at all.
Thanks again

Well my clinical experience is heavy on shadowing and volunteering (mostly shadowing though). I know some doctors offices that actively recruit premeds to do med assisant duties like help with charts, vitals, etc. Some people have done the EMT route, others phlebotomy. Depends on what you can find at your school. I would utilize the resources your pre-med advisor might have and check into maybe starting off at least volunteering at a local free clinic (often they will let you do more than in a hospital) or local hospital (I know patient transport jobs seem to be pretty easy to come across, some even pay you!).

I appreciate your reply, Mshheadoc. I will check with my pre-med advisor.
Good luck everyone.

I am 39 y/o. I have Bachelors Degree and a over a year in Masters Physical Therapy School (not completed). I wish to enter a D.O. program. I am studying the MCAT and realizing I am acing at some studies (eg., Gross Anatomy, Biology, Kinesi) but boy do I need need to brush up on Physics and some Chem! :scared:

Because of my age, I am "feeling" like I'm too old for med school. 😕 I know I have the will and passion to be a D.O. but I have this little voice saying, "you shoulda did this years ago!" I teach Fitness, Yoga, Personal Train and in great shape. I am a mother of three kids: ages: 10, 17, 19. I actually sometimes cry and have dreams about being a doc.

IS THERE ANYONE ELSE MY AGE DOING THIS????

PTMed,
there are lotsa people in your situation. I'm in my 40s, for example. Check out the SDN nontraditional premed forum and also www.oldpremeds.org for like-minded people. Best of luck!
