Wow, applying to Dental School is f*cking expensive.

-$320 for the DAT (more if you retake), + hundreds for all the resources you need to do well. (and time=money but we won't include the countless hours of life spent studying).

-$235 for AADSAS+ $75 for each school after the 1st + most schools require at least $75 more for supplemental fees.

-Deposits once you get in, if you get in.

What happens if after all this time and money, you don't get in? This is like dropping over 1 grand and throwing it out the window. And more money to re-apply?! And still possibly not getting in? How does everyone afford this?
The costs are ridiculous.

I had to decide between food for a week DAT destroyer one time.
I chose DAT destroyer. But, I think someone was saying how people study better when they are hungry anyways haha..

Kidding aside, the applications are super expensive. I try to tell myself in the grand scheme of things, it's just a small fraction of what you are going to pay for dental school.

So to take the DAT and apply for dental school, it can cost a few thousand dollars for the study material and application fees.
If you are competitive, it will cost you thousands more to fly for your interviews. THe more competitive you are, the more interviews you will get, the more it will cost you.. ughh.
And, if you get into dentistry, it would cost you hundreds of thousands to finish your degree.
And, if you are good enough to get into a specialty program, while most of your classmates are out making money, you still are learning and not making much.. costing you lost wages.

I think we take the 'Be cool, stay in school' message a little far...

word. 👍

Yeah, this thought is pretty discouraging. Just have to be as financially frugal as you can while not hurting your chances. I skimped on the study material compared to most people here, and am gonna try to limit myself to about 12 schools. Even with that, I can't really afford many interviews. Haha, oh well.

Hardly a drop in the bucket in the scheme of things. Like one H2O molecule even compared to what your first year tuition is going to cost. Just add it to your list of money spent jumping through hoops. Make sure to write it in red because the debt just keeps piling on...

this is the primary reason why I always tell people to NOT apply until all their stats (GPA+DAT) are in correct order. This is wayyy too taxing (mentally, physically, and financially) to have someone go through it multiple times.

It hurts to see people with low stats, drop $2-4000+ applying to 15+ schools only to learn they weren't competitive enough by landing 15 rejections.

wait a min it costs more to retake DAT? huh?

Obviously dental school will cost a pretty penny. But, at least it should pay off at the end.

...applying to D-School may never pay off and that alone is killing my bank account. I have not even taken the DAT yet, but I have no choice in applying now. I just better do well *_*

o herroo vicsin welcome bak. I remember you from last year for flirting with SDNers....u caused quiet a stir in the forum haha. Rdy to apply dis year?

Add the cost of glasses after staring at the computer for PAT. My eyes will never be the same after this.

That is false ampjbieberblast...but let's forget about that thread. And yes I am ready except for my dats...

YES!!!

I have to take out loans this year! I was left broke from applying last cycle--spent nearly $5k on applications (my entire savings) and associated expenses. 4 interviews and no acceptances. Not cool! And looking for a job in this economic climate...forget about it! 7 job interviews (with 100+ applicants) and no job offers. But you know what? My love for dentistry is unchanged. I guess maybe I need to wakeup from my fantasy dream and figure out a backup plan if things don't work out this cycle. I guess you can't get everything you want in life--no matter how much effort you put into it. Anyone in the same boat?

ROFL! funny you ask...i still haven't planned to retake it. I've been sooooo busy relocating. I don't know where I'm going to be in the next few months. After I figure that out, then I'll schedule to retake the DAT--wherever that may be. I wish I took it when the material was fresh in my mind, because my first attempt was a TOTAL fluke! I can do much much better.

Did you get an acceptance yet? (namely Creighton 😉)

Oh ok! Yeah, I'm still waiting to hear back from OHSU--I was told they'd have some news tomorrow, either acceptances or alternate waiting list. So I'm not officially out of it yet, although I'm kinda treating it like it is since nothing is guaranteed..But good luck to you! Keep me updated on your situation; you just never know.
