Okay, so give me your opinion... I was going to do a road trip in mid/late Aug for like 10 days, from SF up the coast to Vancouver. But with the gas prices do you think it would just be cheaper to fly? Or should I just bail on the road trip and go elsewhere? I don't have very much money at all. But I don't know where else to go.

That would be a beautiful drive. I spent a lot of time in Northern, Northern Cali when I was young (my mom lives in Paradise now), and it is so gorgeous up there. So many beautiful lakes, mountains, forests. And I have only been to the Portland area in Oregon, but I would love to see it. My mom's grandparents lived in Washington and she says it's absolutely beautiful up there too! If you want to stop and see stuff along the way, I would say drive. If you wanna spend the majority of your time in Vancouver (I don't know much about Vancouver, so I can't give an opinion), maybe you should fly. If you're flexible with the time of day that you fly, get a ticket on Southwest.

What kind of vacation do you want? Do you want to see another culture, do you want to totaly veg out, do you want to explore and do adventurous stuff?

Well I am leaving work, wahooooooooo! Another 8 hours succesfully completed. Thanks for the help guys and good luck Lonecoyote on your last half n hour. I will be on BART for the next forty minutes, so it won't be like I am totally free yet. But, I am reading Lolita and I am totally engrossed. Very good book! I recommend it. It was kinda f*cked up though the other day. One of the lawyer's wife saw that I was reading it and asked, "Arn't you a little old to be reading that book, that's more at a 16 year old level." It pissed me off. I wanted to say "Arn't you a little ugly to be going out in public?" But I kinda want to keep my job for a while longer, especially with all of this expensive traveling I am going to do.

Hey Lonecoyote- did you go to UC davis undergrad?

I was accepted off an alternate list. The stress is definately less! However, there is a new stress of finding a house, my wife a job, and all the paperwork they require before the deadlines. I am glad I am taking the summer off to get it all done.

Congrats on being done for the day snowbear 🙂 You work with lawyers? I'm sorry... I had alaw firm job in what now seems like a past life and it convinced me that was one career path I never wanted. I'll have to pick up Lolita. I've never read it but usually have some good reading time on the bus myself. I think I definitely want to see stuff, so you're probably right that I should drive. I've spent a decent amount of time in Seattle already visiting family, but I really want to spend some time in Portland since I have had 3 friends relocate there in the last 6 months. So many people are fleeing the Bay Area for there. So I need to see what all the hype is about. And I would like to do some outdoorsy stuff along the coast. I've never been to Vancouver but it's another one I've heard such good stuff about I need to check out....

So my boss left, and I actually got the articles entered into the database at record speed. Hmmm... I am hoping I can sneak out a little bit early too. Eraser, scrappy, are you guys still reading this? Or have you escaped for the day too? This has been fun... I may need to bump it up tomorrow afternoon 🙂

You're echoing a lot of my own concerns; I imagine that lots of pre-meds/transitioning med students have these same concerns. I think we tend to impose a race horse mentality on ourselves, so that our downtime (and, lets face it, anything you do between acceptance and start of MS-I is just killing time) tends to deflate us and make us feel guilty, when it should recharge us.

My personal remedy to this same feeling was to fall in love with a wonderful girl and marry. I also adopted a dog who I love like a son. These two have pulled me out of my academic eggshell and made me realize that real life exists outside a lecture hall/dissection lab/hospital ward. Maybe I'll prove to be a crappy physician, but I'm gonna be an excellent husband, and one hell of a dad, someday. That's all that matters to me; and I told as much to my adcom interviewers. I think that's why I was accepted in the first place.

I like your thoughts on this process - very grounding.

I'd love to fall in love with the man of dreams right now - How can I schedule finding him in the next two months though? That's the only problem. Oh and the fact that I'm moving across the country in three months so I'd have to leave him behind anyway. And if I don't find him, does that mean I don't get to have real life? That sucks. I'm gonna make my time learning and healing as close to a real life as possible. I'll always dream of weddings and puppies, but that isn't my real life, not yet.

No, I did not. But I did a research summer there and I am convinced that is what got me in there, especially since I am still hanging out on waitlists at other California schools. Are you there for undergrad right now?

Hey I did that trip with some HS buddies. I wouldn't fly- takes the fun out of seeing the coastline. Very nice going along the coast, and Vancouver is great during the summer.

Cool, I think I am definitely going to drive since I've never done the majority of the coast north of Marin.... I've only gone south. I am so looking forward to a vacation...

Yup. Working in the Evolution and Ecology department doing research. Are they moving the medschool to UCDMC in Sac? When would that occur?

They are moving it to Sac once the new building is done. I believe it is going to be in 2006 and then all 4 yrs will be done in Sac. I'm kinda glad I get to do the first 2 years in Davis. It seems like a fun college town kind of a place and a good place to study. Congrats on USC, by the way! Are you from SoCal originally?

yo this thread rocks!

i'm wasting time until i leave for NYC in 2 days .. part of it is to check out 2 more schools, and the rest of the week my friends will be flying up to party with me 😎

then it's a road trip to Miami come June 22nd! woot woot! you need to have a mini-vacation eraser!

yo D!! what's up pimpdaddy!
1.5 more weeks, and i'll be 100% sure!

Thx

Davis is an easy place to study (not too many distractions!) If you want to have any fun and the local bars dont cut it, there's always SF which is within reasonable distance for a night out. Definitely a nice place to work; you'll see patients from all over Northern Cal! That med center serves the population up to the Oregon border I think.

Never lived in SoCal. Ive actually been in NorCal most my life. I think SoCal will be a nice wasy to experience a large city and new environment without getting too far from the contacts and family I have up here.

What up baby! Have fun kickin it in NYC!

If I had infinite money, I'd spend every day of my summer travelling except maybe a week after this quarter ends and a week before med school starts. I'd visit Europe, Egypt, and Japan. I think that would really help me get some motivation back cause right now, I have none.

Since in reality, I'm poor as hell, I'll be working over the summer as much as possible. At least I'm in beautiful San Diego and can visit the beaches whenever I'm not at work. I hope going to the beaches does the trick because if I'm feeling the way I do now come August 30, I'll be up s***creek river with no paddle. 👎

I feel so uninspired. . .

Hey, drivin' up 101 is a great way to go- the Oregon coast is one of the few unspoiled (for the most part) coastlines in the country. If you get a chance, you gotta go to the the Sea Lion Caves a few miles north of Florence- it's an amazing place, right on a huge sea cliff.

As for being apathetic until I start med school, I've gotten so bad that I'm counting the HOURS I have left to work (136). At least my job is laid-back and I get to read most of the time!

Three weeks in Mexico should be very cool, I would love to stay for longer. My boyfriend and I are only going for three nights to this all inclusive resort. Free food and free drinks, Wahooooooooooo! I would've wanted to stay for longer, but finances are kinda an issue. Where are you going and are you just going to be chilling or will you do a volunteer program or something? I am going to Miami for memorial day weekend (next week, yay yay!), so that will be short too, but very sweet. I am just going with one of my close girl friends and we're gonna party like never before! I am going to Rio for 10 days to visit a friend who's been studying there this whole year, that should be great.

Actually, Brick and I are gonna do this trip together. SDN hooked me up with the awesomest travel-buddy ever! We're gonna stay at this beach-side resort, volunteer in a free primary care clinic and study medical Spanish... pretty cool huh? 😎 The program's actually an accredited rotation for 3rd and 4th year medical students. The program's founder is on faculty at UCSF.
I'm WAY excited! 😀

I'm also really glad I have something like this to look forward to, becuase I'm right there with all of you in slackersville, I've bought all the Buffy DVDs up through season 5 now... I have no motivation to do aything but veg out.

Count me in ....I'm extremely lazy and non-motivated lately. I also just count down the hours at work until I can go home and do nothing. Which really surprises me cause I also thrive on being busy. It's just really bizarre and unsettling.

Do you all have money saved up to do this traveling? I agree that we are going to be so much in debt after med school, but I still have to pay rent, etc. The only solution I can think of is taking out loans before school starts to be lazy, but I don't think that is possible. BLAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Nice to know others are feeling this way though. I literally look at my calendar at work every day and try to figure out when I can quit. It's not that my job is terrible, I'm just SO ready to move on.

p.s. If you haven't checked it out already, the lounge provides much entertainment and time wasting.

That's exactly how I feel. I have a little money saved up, and expect to save a little more in my last month at work. Moving back in with the parents until the start of medschool, helps make this possible. I'll probably blow every last dime I save before med school starts (on travel), maybe not the wisest thing to do...

I don't think it's unwise...I really think that even a few thousand dollars is not going to make a difference if you are like me, and are going to be over $200,000 in debt.

Yep, just like you. 🙂

Seriously....is there any loan i can take out before school starts (a few thousand dollars), so that I can take some time off. Or would this be completely ridiculous??

Could you borrow from your parents? Seems like your best bet. You may be able to borrow it directly from a bank if your credit's good, mine offers "consumer loans" of up to 5000. However, they'll probably expect you to start paying on it right away, which could be a problem in medschool. If you can borrow more than you actually need in student loans this would probably be the second-best (after parents) way to fund travel. You wouldn't get a dispersement until school starts, but you could probably put the expenses on your credit card, then pay that down when you get your dispersement. Others may disagree, but it doesn't sound like a "completely ridiculous" idea to me. 👍

Thanks celestron. 🙂 I DO have a 0% credit card right now, and could pay it with loans when school starts...it's a bit scary to me, but might be worth it. I just feel silly being so "irresponsible" at the age of 27.

On a side note....I'm hoping to get off the waitlist at drexel so I can be near my bf, so we may be in the same city, with you being at Jefferson 🙂 (right now i'm going to Rush though) I'd actually like to take the time off I was talking about to spend some time with him this summer 😳

i hear ya. Money is going to be a bit tight - and I may end up needing some of my loan money to cover some stuff. But I think it's worth it - to relax and have fun before school starts....the next 8+ yrs will be busy....

Yay travel buddy! I should start throwing out the med rotation and UCSF bit - I am having the hardest time describing the trip to people - I'm like "uh...it's a volunteer/vacation/spanish immersion thing.....?"

It's like an hour outside Puerto Vallarta - that's where we fly into. It's a fishing village - I think it's called Chacala? Cel would know. It's on the beach though. 😎

Hey Brick,

Are you talking about the squirrels at UCLA when you say "knee deep in squirrels?" Those things are obese! I remember when I first went there I couldn't believe how ginormous those squirrels were. And when I came back to nor cal to visit it made the nor cal squirrels look sickly. I remember this one time when my boyfriend and I were eating at the Taco Bell I threw a piece a candy from that candy shop to a squirrel (I know this sounds like a stupid thing to do)--I used to go to that candy shop ALL of the time, memories! Oh and the boba place was soooo good. THe boba place by my work in SF sucks! Anyways, the squirrel ate the candy but then started choking. I was terrified. He was grabbing his chest and making this hacking motion. I was like, "please squirrel don't die!" I was horrified that I might have killed him. But after a couple of moments, he coughed up the candy and I was soooo relieved. Anywho, just thought that I would share 🙂

OMG that is so funny! I don't know where my fascination with squirrels originated - but we do have a ton of them here. We have a lot of bunnies too, at least where I grew up, and my brother used to say that when he went hiking he would be "knee-deep in bunnies" so I just adapted it for my small animal of choice. Those squirrels can be pretty fierce...they have been known to come right up to people and take food from their hands. And Boba scares me.

Alright, the thread is still alive to get me through my afternoon 🙂 I had boring meetings all morning and then a lunch thing...

Anyway, those squirrel stories are pretty crazy. I think the squirrels here in Sac are a bit more spoiled than the ones in San Francisco. They get fed a lot more here since there are so many little kids coming all the time to tour the capitol and they give them food. Plus, a there are always a lot of people taking long lunch breaks. People in SF seem more stingy about feeding them, at least they were when I worked downtown. Or maybe they were just too busy. It will be interesting to see if the squirrels get fed less once it gets too hot up here for people to really sit out much and feed them.

That Spanish program sounds great. I'd love to get the name of it. My spanish has gotten so rusty again. I was all on top of it for my Prime-lc interview at uci and now I have not been using it. I need to get it back asap for the free clinics....

Haha then my whole evil plan to plant subliminal messages via SDN worked! Today Troy, tomorrow, the world!

How hot is Eric Bana? I mean really. I'm almost about to replace Orlando with this guy....actually..... :meanie:

I know! That's what I was thinking the whole movie. What else has he been in? My boyfriend asked if I was drooling over Brad Pitt and I was all no, Eric Bana. I think it's something about the Hector character, all moral and everything; I wanted to corrupt him

There's a couple of sex scenes... lots of shirtless stuff. If you go in with low expectations, as I did, you'll probably enjoy it enough. Just think of it as a big epic, with good cinematography and attractive people. Take the historical accuracy out of it.

Eraserhead said:

Yeah, he gets naked. I didn't like the movie too much though. I knew it wasn't going to be good after reading reviews and such, but we were at the Metreon and nothing else was really playing and I was fiending for a movie.

Yeah, there isn't much playing lately. Eternal sunshine was the last good movie I saw. I want to see Dogville though, no one will go with me.

Yeah for real - Hector is like the ultimate man. What a mensch.

Kev - Go in to the movie expecting it to suck and you will be surprised. Brad Pitt is ok - I didn't hate him as much as everyone else - and yes, he's like naked all over the place!!!

I'm surprised this thread is still alive.

I want to see Dogville also and none of my friends want to. They say it sounds too weird. I have heard it is quite good. We could have an SF SDN Dogville movie outing one of these days I suppose...

Oh yeah - he was in The Hulk - he played the Hulk. He also had a bit role in Black Hawk Down, and he was a voice in Finding Nemo! Not that I've done much research on him....... 😀
