got an email from pritzker on 8/20/04 that my application is on hold until they've screened more applicants. (fyi app complete with lors 8/11/04). does anyone have an idea what my chances of getting an interview are? or is this basically a rejection?

How did you find out when your app was complete? I tried to look it up on their secondary website, but couldn't tell.

Although I am a first time applicant, I think you don't need to worry too much about the hold. It is better than rejection. At least, you may have some chances in the future. Good luck.

On first review, about 450 applicants are invited to interview and about 200 applicants are put on hold for a second review at a later date. Of these, about 50 are ultimately invited to interview. Should you be placed on hold for a second review, we advise you to mail any new information (reasons for interest in Pritzker, grade reports, abstracts, other publications, honors, awards or any special recognition) to the Committee. All applicants held for a second review will be notified by February 1, 2005, if they are going to be invited for interviews.

I was on hold last year at Pritzker and ended up getting an interview in February. I didn't really update them much, just a short letter saying what I liked about their program in November. I subsequently withdrew post-interview because I liked the school less than I thought I would, but the moral here is that you've definitely still got a shot once you're on hold. Hey, I'm on hold too and was pretty depressed/frustrated/angry/furious/settled when i got the email. From what I've read on previous SDN posts last year (yes, and I have read their statement on the website about 200ppl being put on hold) nothing much happens after being put on hold. sorry to be the pessimistic jerkwad.

I am really interested in U of C so I'm gonna write them a letter or two, kissing a$$, telling them why they should pick me. Other than that I don't know what else to do, I'm also out of school. Maybe I can tell them that I'm working at a sh%tty job to pay for all the apps and that I have become the fastest copy, paste, mail merger in the office! I think that counts as "special recognition", right?

I wouldn't assume that. The e-mail made it more sound like they were seeing if something better came along before getting back to me. So I would still apply if interested in the school.

How long did you wait to find out your app is complete? Did they send you an email? My supp and letters were sent out about a week ago, but I still haven't heard anything from them yet. Since I initially had some problems to submit my app, I can't help wondering whether they have received my app or not.

They sent me the complete notice about 4 days after the letter got there (approximately). They sent me an e-mail for notification.

For those of you who got hold, did they send this info via snail mail or e-mail.

I think the reason I was put on hold (at least the reason I would like to hope I was put on hold) is that while I have a decent MCAT and GPA, I basically have no research experience nor the desire to enter academics. Makes me hope that I'll get interviews at school that are a better match for me. I got the on hold e-mail four days after I was complete.

My GPA was 3.5 from prestigeous UG, 3.95 post-bac, 33R MCAT, great shadowing, $hitloads of volunteer work, social services management job for 2 yrs after UG, chair of a couple student orgs, captain of rugby team, tutoring, plus lots more ECs. I think the reason I got put on the back burner is because I have only done social science research? I'm not interested in medical research and although I worked on two projects, I haven't come close to publishing. U of C is a big academic powerhouse, they focus on training "scientific thinkers" and this may not be the best fit for me considering I am more interested in the touchy feely public health side of medicine and made that clear in my application. That's my guess, but who knows? I think this whole thing is crap shoot

I have seen couple SDN people from last year, who didn't do ANY reseach whatsoever and got in to Pritzker early on. I support rockstar's claim that it is a crap shoot. So don't worry too much. You might be pleasantly surprised with your interview invitation coming along your way soon. Hopefully for me too. 🙂

i have a 3.64 from ucla and 34R. ca resident. very good ec's. i agree that its a crapshoot though. in my application i didn't emphasize research at all or academics even though i did two years of research. i would still send the secondary in.. who knows what these people are looking for anyway?
