I have an ultra-common first name-last name combo--so common in fact that there's another academic with the same name who does vaguely similar research (we both went to the same small, selective conference once and had to explain to the conference chairs twice that we were, in fact, different people). As a result, I'm really insistent about having my middle initial included on all articles that I'm an author on, to the point where I'll send back copyright forms if my middle initial not included on there.

Anyone else really picky about this?

Yup. Have had a few situations where my middle initial didn't get included. I think I find it most annoying when I've corrected it when editing but those somehow still don't get incorporated. Truthfully, really isn't a big deal (still goes on my CV, doubt it ever gets attributed to anyone else in situations I would care) but still annoying.

Flat out included the wrong middle initial for a co-author once by mistake. She ignored 3 rounds of manuscript edits (just flat out didn't reply) and then I'm fairly certain approved submission without even opening the file . Then got mad when she saw the mistake on the authorship form once everything was already in press and the journal couldn't pull it back. Don't feel too bad about that one.

Yeah, she definitely dug her own grave on that one.

I hate being called by my full first name. No one has ever called me by it and I don’t even register it if someone tries to get my attention by saying it.

Everything I am on says Mike. When my work door ID got printed it was on paper and I pulled it out to cross out Michael and wrote Mike. Someone must have noticed bc I had a new office card a week later. I could not get to my work email address before they set it up automatically which I still find mildly annoying.

I don't have a middle name and apparently there is no one publishing anywhere, ever that has my last name. So, I never give it any thought 😎

Yep. I have a VERY common first/last name combo. There are several prominent physicians and psychologists with my name. Even with my middle initial, there’s still another well known researcher that shares my name (thankfully our areas of study are nothing alike- she does autism research).
