I typically am the type to not prepare one ounce for an interview other than knowing the program which I usually already do because that is why I applied there. But as far as practicing or thinking of questions and having answers or having a good psych patient workup ready or some crap-I just like to wing it and have fun-comes off natural and I always have interviewed well throughout the ranks to get to this point.
Nothing was different this round except I was shocked to get the Strenghts and weaknesses questions THREE times!! 2 at the same program and 1 at another. There are some weaknesses in medicine, and especially psych that I definetly have-I mean hell I have 100's-I need to work on all aspects of my doctoring-but as far as personal strenghts and weaknesses
I mean come on-what answer these days is not cliche or plain stupid or rehearsed. I mean what could you honestly answer to what your weaknesses are.
Cliche ones to make self soound good-
-I tend to overwork myself
-I am a bit obsessive about finding out everything about my patient and that takes too long
-I am sometimes too friendly to people
Real true ones-
-I am lazy a lot of times
-I watch too much tv
-I suck at getting up before 7am
-i get pissed off at people really easily or am impatient
Now how do either of those even work-its a no-win-you sound dumb either way.
The strenghts are a bit easier but still pretty cliche-
-I work well with others
-I am very motivated
-I have a good work ethic
-I have a friendly glowing personality
-I interact with patients well
on and on and on
I mean what does this question tell someone? why bother-I pretty much blew it each time and still did not prepare for the next time only to be surprised by it again-I always say that I cannot think of any glaring weaknesses or strenghts that will probably set me apart from most of the residents/docs here since most of those qualities are ingrained in people who become docs-oh well but I hate that question-always have and will NEVER ask it to anyone!
