Ive heard that the shelf exams are tough, but frankly I am looking forward to being able to use commercial prep books/banks for tests rather than professors notes/ideas of variable quality and utility.

This is my current feeling about the matter as an M2 that has yet to start clinical rotations.

Would you rather have shelf exams or in house exams?

You'll see that there is plenty off the wall stuff on the shelf exams too. They are far less predictable grade wise with the curve.

though the shelf exam may be the only objective thing you've got going for you during a rotation...

Shelf exams for sure. Some rotations at my school have in house exams and shelf exams (surg, fm, psych) and the shelf exams were easier.

The shelf exams have made my life easier as I don't have to kiss ass or work my ass off to get great clinical evals every rotation to make honors. I like my school's grading system as most rotations has the shelf as the most important thing because objective evaluation >>>> subjective
