just curious. Those schools could easily start a pharmacy school and fill their class more so just on name alone. Anyone ever wonder? Yes, I know Columbia had one up until the 1970s when they closed it down.

they have Law schools so why not pharmacy schools?😀

Most people think pharmacists count pills and sell condoms, so a pharmacy school probably wouldn't add much prestige, like medicine or law gives. I was wondering the same thing, though.

I dare you to use that answer if u could get a similar question on an interview.:meanie::meanie:

What's the process of closing a pharmacy school down like? When was the last time it happened and what was the situation?

I know of a couple actually. When? May 2006. The process? A b*tch

Ivy League students are basically taught to be leaders or executives. An Ivy League graduate school alumni would most likely be CEO of a retail pharmacy chain or pharmaceutical company, than say a pharmacist. I just saw "The Social Network" the other day, and the actor who played then Harvard president Larry Summers, said to the Winklevoss twins, "we at Harvard feel it's faaaar better to create jobs than to struggle in finding one."

I just read about a school that closed in 2006 in Hawaii. Those poor students. Does anyone know anyone from there and did they ever get their money back. I'm sure some got into other programs and are probably pharmacists by now.

I'm afraid that might be it. I go to an Ivy League school and I have definitely encountered that attitude here - from an academic advisor, no less. I also talked to a pre-health career advisor, and although she wasn't actually disdainful, she admitted to knowing virtually nothing about pharmacy. Very frustrating. Although it seems that with the changes occurring in education and training of pharmacists (recent switch to doctorate degree, more students completing bachelor's first, more pharmacists completing residencies, etc.) pharmacy schools might start to be seen as more analogous to other health professional schools like med, dental, and vet. However, it's hard to say. The current popular perception of pharmacists seems pretty engrained, so this might just be wishful thinking on my part.

Well up until 2000 the degree for pharmacy was a BS and put this on par with nursing (BSN). At least in California, major research universities (UC) did not have these types of programs and shunted them to the more blue collar, 2nd tier CSU system (exception UCSF as a health sciences campus).

In short, my theory is:

pre-2000, BS Pharm was too specialized for an ivy league school and too "practical" a degree to have at a major research institution.

post-2000, PharmD looks more attractive but history dictates that there's no rush to embrace opening a program "just because" it went "doctor" on you.

I think some of these answers forget that Columbia , Penn (if we're talking about all of the Ivy League), and Yale have nursing schools, so they could easily also have pharmacy, right?

From what I could remember reading, Columbia shut down their program due to lack of apps/low enrollment, or something of that sort. However, I believe there were rumors flying around years ago that USP was going to merge/affiliate with UPenn, but nothing really came of it.

I guess one can also ask why there aren't any ivy league optometry schools

ROFL....HAHAHAH....worst rumor ever. why on god's green earth would a prestigious ivy league school affiliate with....eh nevermind

The school in Hawaii was shut down because, among other things, it was unaccredited. Many students sued for refunds but I don't know what happened after that.

Back in the day, Northwestern had a school of Pharmacy, but they shut it down due to lack of attendance.

Not really.

I always wondered too.

If some ivy leagues (Penn) have nursing, why not Pharm? Maybe we'll see something in the future now that much research is going more into pharmaceutics than ever before.

Dental schools cost more to start up than Pharm schools and yet many Dental schools are affiliated with prestigeous private universities (Penn, Tufts, etc).

I didn't say that I think pharmacists count pills and sell condoms, but that's what non-medical people think (and some medical people who don't have a pharmD on their service).

Don't give them any ideas! There are too many new schools already!

i had a medical student ask me in pharmacy school "pharmacists take biochem??"

i just stared at him entirely confused. people are very dumb about pharmacy for the most part. everyone goes off assumptions.

I would have stared at him and asked "do you really take only one semester of pharmacology in medschool?" 😀

Most people are ignorant regarding pharmacy practice. When I tell people my goals of becoming a pharmacist they say "you better know how to count by 5's!"

Where are all these people who are so negative about pharmacy? All my friends and family were crazy supportive. I have yet to meet anyone who thinks pharmacy is a bad choice or that it is not a great job. I mean some people joke about counting by 5, but even I do that sometimes. I have talked to anyone who seriously thinks pharmacists go to school to learn to count by 5. 🙄

Most of my friends and family are very supportive. No one has told me it was a bad career or discouraged me from going to pharmacy school. I have had people come to me with their misconceptions about pharmacy though, although these people were mainly disgruntled patients at the retail pharmacy I worked in who thought the pharmacist merely counted pills and put a label on bottles. I will apologize for my incorrect statement that "most" people view pharmacy that way.

Oh customers? Yeah, that sounds about right. I thought we were talking about normal people. :meanie:

There are some advantages to being underutilized. Liability comes to mind. Look at how the chains are ruining immunizations. Pharmacists running out into a crowded waiting area at 5 o'clock with a syringe. I've seen some older pharmacists who were forced into it and look more scared than the patients they are immunizing.

I still have chats with nurses on the floors/in the units that had no idea pharmacy was a 4 year doctoral-level degree. I get a smaller handful that wonder why there's a pharmacy student in the unit looking through charts and going on rounds.

None of this was malicious, they just didn't know. All of the younger residents, interns, fellows, as well as most attendings I've worked with enjoy our presence though. You'll get an occasional hard-headed physician who hates pharmacists and will ignore their recommendations despite being way wrong (ie will insist on a vanco trough of 4), but those are few and far between and their numbers are decreasing as many retire.

Eh, UCSD has a School of Pharmacy. Who cares about Ivy Leagues when you got perfectly good public schools!

My 3rd year Pharm student friend is a good source for biochem tutoring 😀

Bragging rights.

Might as well just drop your pants and compare wang sizes at that point.

Really? All of my roomates this year are convinced that I'm entering a souless pill-pushing career that will ultimately drive me to alcoholism. I'm gonna chalk it up to them being senior humanities majors with job offers ranging from 10-12 dollars an hour though...

I have never wondered why schools like Harvard and Yale do not have pharmacy schools because there are now simply too many pharmacy schools! For example, there are eight pharmacy schools in California alone. What happened to the good old days when California only had UOP, USC, and UCSF? 🙁🙁

Ronald Reagan was governor, Miami Vice ruled the airwaves, we thought we'd have flying cars by the year 2000, and the Sony Walkman was the iPod of its day.

And our population was like 10+M less.

Damn those were some good times.

I could handle most of the 80s again... Just not the interest rates 👎

Or they tell you to memorize the PDR! Not on this planet anyway.
