I'd be interested in:
-> 1-2 bedroom apartment
-> relatively new complex with quiet neighbors
-> within 15 minutes driving distance to the strip
-> $750-1000/month rent

Are there a lot of places that meet this criteria or am I looking at much higher rents?

Thank you.

Vegas is now a renters market, but you're probably still looking at closer to the $1000 end of the spectrum for a newer complex. There are many complexes close to the strip, but I'd recommend buying a gun so you can at least shoot back. Driving anywhere in Vegas is a 30 minute commitment, so I'd try looking in some of the areas that are a bit further out since you're likely to be in a safer neighborhood, with all of the conveniences nearby (i.e., gyms, stores, etc.). Henderson, Silverado Ranch, Greenvalley are all South and Southeast and good bets. North Vegas is very cheap, comparatively, but bring extra rounds for drivebys and whatnot. Summerlin (Northwest) and Southern Highlands (Southwest) are the newest developments and accordingly, more expensive. Commute traffic from both is a true bitch, but both are very nice areas. Hope this helps.

I lived in Summerlin last year (right off Charleston and Fort Apache). It was pretty convenient, a straight shot down Charleston to UMC, which took 11 minutes early in the AM, and no more than 30 minutes during drive time traffic (5pm). If you live in Green Valley you will inevitably have to deal with traffic on two freeways (US95 and I-15) depending on where you live.

I think the rents that you are looking at are about right. For a one bedroom, you will pay around $1000/mo, depending on the location. I rented a room for $400 in a 4 bedroom house with 2 other people (total rent ~$1200). If you are gonna pay $1000/mo for an apartment, you should check out housing rentals, which can run almost the same (plus you have more space).

As a native Las Vegan, I can say, stay away from North Las Vegas, as the traffic, and population are notoriously worse. As mdb3006 put it, bring a few extra clips for you gat if you plan on moving there.

Good luck with your hunt and make sure to check www.craigslist.org for more housing options.

I will be back the last weekend of March. We should get a drink, or two, or TWELVE. The autopsy service is killing me. I did seven posts in 5 days. Two of which were greater than 400 lbs (couldnt fit in the CT scanner). I wish you Rads b!tches would get some bigger scanners so I wouldnt have to do these autopsies (probably the only reason I had to do them).

I'll be here ready to drink. I'm designing a new scanner now, it's called the "Fata$$ 5000". It's a 128 slice CT, good for patients up to 2.5 tons. And quit your bitching or I'll make you wash my car and polish my 31" rims next year when you come back.
