I have a friend who is interested in transferring to Stony Brook from Fordham. I'm not sure whether that's the right move to make. This friend has a 3.95 GPA at fordham but the core seems long and is filled with useless courses. I was wondering if maybe stony brook is a better choice. Any advice/opinions for my friend would be greatly appreciated.

stony brook is awful. it's the only decent school within driving distance to me and i take summer/winter classes there. terrible, terrible, terrible. fordham is ranked higher than stony and you probably have more shadowing/volunteering opportunities in the city. if money is an issue, then go to stony, but if not, then don't bother. also everyone and their mother is premed and convinced that they're going to harvard med with a 2.9. if you go, be prepared for the worst.

I was at Stony Brook for their admitted students day and after sitting in the gym for an hour listening to people talk, we were finally told that we could either leave and tour the campus, or stay and listen to the "pre-med" orientation that they were going to have in a couple of minutes. I went up to go to the bathroom, but when I came back, the ENTIRE place was still full of students and their parents. They were ALL pre-med. I realized then that all of these people would be my future classmates had I decided to attend Stony. :scared:

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I went to Stony Brook and it is an amazing institution. It is very research heavy, and the professors are all brilliant. We have a hospital on campus. There is a wide array of research and clinical positions available for pre-meds. Shadowing is just as easy to find. People always complain about SBU but that's because they sit in their dorms all day and then bitch about how there isn't anything going on. It's a top 50 university in just 50 years of it being a institution. I wouldnt think twice from going from Fordham to SBU, for someone aspiring to be in healthcare.

according to who is it a top 50 university? it dropped from a top 100 (barely) in the past few years to 111 according to US news. and lol it's usually ranked as one of the most depressed campuses, obviously not because students love it. when i got back to my school (ivy league) and people asked where i took classes this summer, they thought it was community college. i understand it's your school and you want to defend it, but i'm speaking about my experience. one of your fellow students agreed with me above and i think if you asked, the majority of sb students would say it sucks (which is exactly what the poor souls taking summer classes with me did, in fact, say). i don't really care what you think - it's your school, not mine (thank goodness), so whether or not you agree with me is pretty meaningless.

SMH at the fact you judging a school by some of the summer classes you took there. And congrats for going to an ivy league, like anyone cares enough that you had to point that out. If you're speaking about your experience, than specifically state that and not act like what you spew is objective fact. But I see what you did there. As someone who attended more than a few weeks, I know what I'm talking about do don't try to talk about things you have no idea than act like you're better than the next person.

SMH at the fact that you're so bothered by what a stranger on the internet (correctly) says about your school that you think you need to find others to support you. if you're proud of your school, then be proud, but my opinion and my experience still stand. you can have as many people as you want come out and say sb is the best, rocks, whatever, but it won't change my mind (or that of many others). sorry that you're so insecure that you think you need to rally up randoms on the internet. i'm done with this "argument" and i wish you luck at your mediocre state school (not that you need it, since it's super easy anyway).

if you have anything else you'd like to say to me, feel free to send a PM and i will happily continue to show you why i'm right and you're wrong. i won't be checking this thread again, though i'm sure you'll have something silly to say.

oh and btw, you used the wrong form of "then" several times. not doing much to help your crappy state school's rep.

:whoa: :scared: 🙄 why do these school vs school threads often denigrate into aggression and insults?

3.95. Dayumm. 👍

MOST important factor: Is he or she happy at Fordham? Is (s)he enjoying it there? Does your friend think (s)he'll be happier at Stony?

It also depends on what your friend wants to major in and as academically interested in. If you're a first semester freshman, this may be difficult to determine.

The obvious pros of going to stony brook is the strong reputation for the sciences, greater opportunities for research (they're affiliated with Brookhaven national lab), and the medical school affiliation. Your friend should ask him or herself if doing research is one of their top priorities. I don't know how hard/easy it is to actually get into a lab, and how long it takes for you to start working on an actual project once you get accepted, but there are definitely much much more research opportunities at Stony.

Some things you might not like about stony are the huge intro science and pre-requisite class sizes that number in the hundreds. At a large state school like that you'll be graded mainly by TAs and it might be hard getting to know faculty members should you want LORs for competitive programs or medical school. Another thing is the huge number of pre-meds + science majors.

OP, if you're thinking about majoring somewhere in the humanities - which would set you apart from the masses of science major pre-meds - I would definitely recommend staying at Fordham. The philosophy/anthro/sociology/psych/theology/english departments here are phenomenal and I've loved almost all of my liberal arts courses here so far. Depending on what you put into it, (and who your professor is), the small core classes and liberal arts classes are incredibly engaging. Many of the lib. arts faculty here are accomplished and well known in their field... AND it's easy to get to know them, which would be a plus if you ever wanted to obtain a letter of recommendation from them or do independent study in that area. I mention independent study because Fordham is one of the top producing schools for fulbright and dem other high-falootin' scholarships.

But the core really isn't for everyone. Unlike me, many people go all four years getting crappy professors and hating the core.

A tip for getting through the core more quickly: when you register for classes, see if you can make them "double-count" for more than one core requirement. You can talk to the department heads about this... most department heads are helpful. Of course, you can also major in science here. The chem and physics departments are pretty decent.

Many of my classmates are finding shadowing/medical service/research opportunities at nearby hospitals like Al Einstein, NYU, Mount Sinai. I think of the city as a huge source of potential research and shadowing opportunities, but of course, it's a little more difficult to get in (paid) than if you went to Stony and wanted in on one of their labs.

Remember, you can major in whatever you want as long as you do well in it. Get involved in whatever interests you. If you can survive freshmen and sophomore years at FU and still be pre-med by junior year, you're almost 90% guaranteed acceptance into a US medical school as long as you cover all the traditional bases: volunteering, shadowing. Research if you're aiming for a top 25 school.

Good luck with your decision. PM me if you have any more questions.
