Anyone going for NYU interview on Jan 28?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey, I am also Canadian myself!

I don't have NYU interview booked yet but I am desperately waiting for it.

Mind you if I ask when you submitted the application and when you received the interview offer from NYU?

My app was mailed to school in 1st week of October but I haven't heard from NYU yet..

I think my applicaation was mailed out in mid August and I didn't pay the NYU applicaiton fee until mid september. I received the invitation for interview in late december. If I remember correctly, it was around December 17-20th. NYU is slower than other schools in processing its applications I guess because a lot of people apply there. For my other interviews, I received the interview invitation between 1-3 weeks after I submitted the fee (all pre-december interviews). hope it helps..........if you have more questions, feel free to ask !!

What are the schools that you got interview invitation from? I applied to only 9 "Canadian friendly" schools. Also, if you don't mind can you let me know your sGPA, oGPA and DAT scores? I just wanna see where I stand. I have 3.61 sGPA, 3.52 oGPA and 21AA 22TS 21PAT (no section below 18) and thought that this stat would land me interview even if my app was mailed on Oct 5th.

BTW congrats on all of your interview invitations! Makes me little jelly 😉

interveiw inviation from Western, Detroit mercy, USC, Loma linda, Roseman and NYU.

DAT: 22 AA 22 TS 18 PAT (no section below 18).

My undergrad GPA = 2.92 and M.Sc GPA = 4.17, (research based with 1 publication but I don't think they care about publication ........I didn't list that on my application). Overall GPA is around 3.25.
I was a lousy undergrad student but after that.......I guess the trend is going upward and end nicely (I ended up with nomination for governor general medal) and the schools see that. I also have extremely strong reference letters........I have 4 reference letters (1 dentist and 3 professors). All of them wrote >2 pages long reference letter with very specific details and that really helped a lot !!

If I don't get in Dental school this cycle, I am considering about doing a Masters. My only problem is if I get into Master this fall (2013 Fall), and apply to Dental school on 2013 cycle, I will not be able to goto Dental school even if accepted because I have to finish my Master which is two years right? So as I see it, I can only apply to Dental school on 2014 cycle if I decide to do Masters. It gets more complicated if I don't get accepted even in 2013 application cycle because my application in 2014 cycle will pretty much be same as 2012 and 2013 cycle and if so, I could have done Masters and also apply in 2014 cycle which will higher my chance of getting interview.

I totally understand how you are feeling. I have been through that. I think your problem is that you apply too late. your application is actually very strong !!! touch wood, if you don't get in this year, do more volunteer work and get involved in reserach (don't do a master......it's a nasty business if you get a bad supervisor) !! and then get strong reference letters and apply again but early !! you are a sure in next year if you apply early !! Also diversify your school selections !! don't just go for the top-tier dental schools............everyone wants to get in but realistically, what's your chance? you have to underestimate your application when you apply and then always put in some safe schools that you know you will get interview for sure !!!

Thanks for your advice! I am not aware of any possible research opportunity unrelated to Master's study though. Maybe paid research job? Even this would be hard to search for. Where should I start to find such opportunity? I will definitely apply very early next cycle. As for the school selections, I did not really apply to top-tier dental schools like Columbia, Harvard, UPenn and etc. I applied to 7 Canadian friendly schools which are NYU, BU, U of Min, UoP, Case Western, UDM, and Buffalo. What other schools should I add to the list for next cycle?

Add USC, Louisville, and NOVA

not sure about if University of Buffalo is canadian friendly........it's close to toronto but don't think it's canadian friendly !!! how about newer schools like western university of health sciences, LECOM, Roseman and new england? UNLV is also canadian friendly !! I personally had interview at Western and Roseman and I think Western is doing pretty well and I like it (block system and small class size) and even though the dental program is new but It is doing pretty well and it has well-estalbished DM and pharmacy and nursing programs to support the dental medicine program.
