Albany made me a great offer for next year, so I said yes today. Plus, I have tons of family in the area and free food and shelter. Is there anyone else considering going to SUNY Albany this fall? If so, please say hi! I'd love to know some people when I go to NY from out here in CA. I'm in the biomedical science MPH program.🙂

I'm also going to Albany next Fall! I'm in the Health Policy track, but one thing that really drew me to Albany (among many others) was the potential for sort of "minoring" in another concentration, so I'd also like to study epidemiology. I'm from Florida and currently living in Memphis, TN - so I'm glad to hear there's at least one other person coming from out of state.

I'm not sure about driving in snow, though. Never have before. The last time I saw snow was Jan 1999. The decision was made easier by my rejection yesterday to the big school in CT. I applied to their SBS program. I really don't know why I thought I had a shot because I have no public health work experience, nor a degree in a social science. Did you have to turn down other schools? I only had to turn down USC because they offered me only loans, whereas Albany offered me tuition. I am hoping that because I want to pursue another degree after the MPH that where I got the MPH from won't be too big of a deal. And I just got a UAlbany sweatshirt to show my pride here at my CSU. Bad thing is that it's like 89 degrees here tomorrow and will be around there for a while. Done rambling.🙂

I'm not so excited about driving in the snow, either... I thought Memphis winters have been bad enough!
I turned down Yale and BU to attend Albany - those were the only other schools I applied to. I think the name of the school you go to matters, but I think what you do while you are in school is more important. It sounds like after graduation from Albany you're pretty well prepared to begin working, which is appealing, especially with their emphasis on internships. Plus, it is really hard to beat the financial aspect of saving $70,000 from not attending Yale or BU. Albany offered me an assistantship, which basically sealed the deal for me.

Are you going to try to be "in-state" for the second year of the program? I'm wondering about it. Not exactly sure of everything I would need to do.

I'm not really sure how that works either, but it would be great to be considered in-state in the second year. I'm planning on transferring my residency to NY state as soon as I can after moving there in hopes of that working out.

Have you been able to register yet? My questions seem to either be shifted from dept. to dept. or a "I need one more signature" response from the secretary for BMS. Also, have they sent you your reward money yet? They told me they would send me the stipend money, but I'm guessing the scholarship money just goes towards tuition. Funny, because before I accepted, my emails were answered promptly as well as phone calls. Then after I accepted, my emails are not returned or returned after a long period of time. They seem nice at Albany. Maybe they just have a lot of people bugging them right now. All I want is to get into the classes I need. How many classes are you taking in the first semester? I'm coming in from the quarter system, so I am not totally sure what is "full time" to Albany. I was thinking 4 public health classes and the seminar we have to take. Maybe you have some advice? Thanks.😕🙂

Unfortunately, I don't actually have that much information for you, either. I hadn't been too concerned about registering, yet, and just received a letter in the mail about who to contact to make that happen. From my understanding, all mph students take basically the same classes in the first semester, so I don't think it should be that much of a problem in terms of getting into the classes that you want. I've only gotten as far as making sure that I can sign into myUAlbany. I'll keep you posted if I find anything out - or if you find out that I should be more stressed than I am, please let me know.
In terms of financial aid, you're also ahead of me there. I wasn't expecting to receive any of the money until after school started, including the stipend. Maybe you have worked something out with them different than my situation? I'm also working on loans to go with the money they are giving me, but I haven't gotten very far. Sorry I can't be more help - I'll let you know if I find anythin gout.
