anyone going to barry university 1 yr program?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am a lil concerned about the cost as I am an international student. I am calculating almost $30,000?? ($815 x36) Is this accurate? Do they provide any assistance? Is it worth it? I also have to think about my current loans ($32,000) and the cost of dental school ($50,000/year). Someone please enlighten me?

Does anyone know if one can claim residency for Nova after D1? That'd save about 7500 bucks later on..

Has anyone else gotten accepted into the option I program for the 2009-2010 class? I recently got accepted and it looks like I will be attending the program unless I get off the wait list for EVMS SMP program.

I've also been accepted to the Option I Program for the 2009-2010 class. I'm from Fort Lauderdale but go to school in New York. Also applying to Columbia, Mount Sinai, and USF M.S. programs...so I'm basically waiting to hear from others before I decide what I'm going to do. What have you heard about the 1-year program?

The program definitely helps. I only had 1 interview pre-Dec 1st but got 3 more post-Dec (after my Fall grades were sent out). Nova likes the program that they accepted 14 students to their College of Dentistry.

For pre-dents, we take 17 graduate credits Fall Semester. For some of the courses, you take it with Podiatry students. I'm currently the only pre-dent that's taking 17 credits for Spring while everyone else is taking 14. Basically leaves me with only 2 credits to graduate and fulfill in the summer, giving me more time to study for the comprehensive exam in June.

Feel free to PM me with any other questions.

I have not heard too much about the program but as of right now I am going to be attending the program for the fall semester, unless I get off the wait list from EVMS. I did call Dr. Laudan today about some information about the program. So far, I know that the program lasts about a year and you take 16 credits first semester, 14 credits second semester and 6 credits during summer. So, a job would be impossible to keep. And, I asked about applying to medical schools and he told me about some statistics from last years (72 out of 78 got in to some form of medical school or dental school). Btw. Congratulations on your acceptance... hope to see you in fall down there.

Does anyone know how long it takes from the time you are sending your application to hearing a decision?

hey artanis, my application was in by late November and they said they would not start reviewing applications till February. I called them end of January and they said that the application would be sent in for review on February 1st. On February 4th, I got a call from the dean saying that I was accepted. So, I think the turn around time is pretty quick as long as you have submitted the application.

All of my documents and rec letters were in by Tuesday (March 24th) and I got a call Friday morning (March 27th) from Dr. Lauden telling me I had been accepted.

Can someone familiar with the area give the best places to live. Maybe a couple names of apartment complexes right around campus that are safe. I heard North Miami can be pretty shady so I'm starting to worry that I'll have to commute a long distance to class. I lived in Coral Gables for undergrad a couple years ago but never really ventured up into the North Miami Beach area so I'm pretty clueless. Thanks

I got accepted to the 1 year program as well. I'm sill thinking about it, but I am definitely leaning that way. I am waiting to hear back from NOVA's MBS before I send in my deposit, but I only have a couple more weeks I think. Anyone else send in their deposit yet?

I also got into Barrys 1 yr program, but also got into UMDNJ and cant decide which one to go to , either one will help i think but i feel like no one knows who barry is where should i go? thx

I have sent my deposit in already so I will be definitely attending barry for the fall.

Does anyone know what they are doing for living situation yet?

I got a single bedroom apartment lined up at Watermarke at Biscayne for $810/month. I'll be driving out there from California. If anyone is worried about transportation over there then they could carpool with me to classes if they also lived at Watermarke. Just an offer.

I'll be driving to miami from the west coast too, if you are by yourself, perhaps we can drive together...haha

Yea, I got accepted into the 18 month programs and I will be going to Barry University. I was just down there the past couple of days and I am from Cincinnati, OH. I found a place to live, and also visited the Barry Campus. I will be living in the Intracoastal Yatch Club Apartments, very nice and as for the campus nothing special but not bad at all. If you have any questions about living I can help you since I was just down there and no what the areas look like a little. The best places to live from what I seen are the Aventura and sunny isles beach areas

I will also be attending the one year program at Barry. Im heading down in June to sign a lease somewhere.. most likely in aventura or sunny isles beach. Has anyone received anything in the mail from barry regarding registration/ financial aid?

I think they said that we should be receiving a packet soon regarding all the different materials.

Hey, could you help me answer these questions please?

How much is the rent? Is there a parking space?

Well the rent is alot, it ranges from 1212-1600, depending on how many bed rooms and what floor you are on. A one bedroom on the lower floors will be around 1212 a month and if on a higher level it would cost you more. There is one parking spot but if you have two cars like I do because my girlfriend is coming down with me it will cost you 50 dollars a month for an extra parking spot. It can be a little expensive but the place is really nice and close to campus and the beach.

Do you guys have any idea how much time we have from receiving our acceptance letter to actually giving them an answer? I have had mine for a while but am still waiting on Loyola and GA-PCOM masters to get back to me.. I def don't wanna lose my spot at Barry but def don't wanna lose 500 bucks either... I kinda dont wanna ask them either because maybe i can play dumb if it is too late? Is it ever too late??

I think the acceptance letter says that you have approximately three weeks from the time you receive the letter to send in a deposit, so that leaves a few days, maybe a couple weeks max after that to figure it out.

I know that Loyola told me that if you hadn't heard from us yet, you should start to look into the schools you did get accepted to, just wanted to pass the information along since you were waiting just like me.

How long has your app been complete and have you been waiting to hear from loyola? I am in my 5th week since completion so I was hoping there was still some chance..I called today and some EXTremely unenthused guy said my app was still processing aka no decision has been made yet.. still hoping..

My acceptance letter from Barry says as soon as possible- there is no time limit on it or anything and their website kinda sketches me out you cant find any info from them or get in touch with them on it (once i finally called and spoke with someone on the phone a few months ago did they respond to my emails)

Congrats to everyone that got accepted! I too will be attending in the Fall of 2009. I'm doing the 1-year biomedical science masters.

I was wondering where everyone would be living, or if anyone has any suggestions as to where would be a good idea to live? I should be heading down there in a couple weeks but I wanted to have an idea before I got down there.

Thanks everybody!

Congrats guys! I just declined yesterday and now have one week to decide between Loyola or GA-PCOM ..

Hey guys I'm in the Barry program right now and I'm almost done, so feel free to shoot any questions.

My roommate is done with the program so I'm actually looking for another roommate right now to take his spot. If any of you need a place to stay, I live in Aventura (really nice, safe, clean, etc.). Let me know if you're interested in sharing a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment with me. Thanks and congrats.

I'm going to the program, but I need to figure out how much rent is before I start taking out loans. Can anybody help me out with this? I don't really care how nice the place is, just that it's somewhat close to the school and safe. I kinda wanna keep it low. If anybody has any information about places to rent and the prices, I'd really appreciate it =]

edit:
to the people who are saying rent is like 800 or 1000... are you splitting that or is that all you?

I hope to see you all in the fall.... I am also going to Barry for the option 1 program....I am staying at Aventura....Is anyone else planning on staying there?? Also, does this program have mostly pre-dental or pre-med students??

Hey I wanted to know where in Aventura you are staying because I was planning on living at Lincoln Pointe and I wanted to know if there are other people from Barry staying over there??
