Hi Folks- for any of you who are going to UM-Baltimore, can you tell me what the avg. gpa and DAT scores are for the classes? I can't seem to find them anywhere.
Thanks
Perc--

PS- is the school located in a swanky neighborhood like it's pal J-Hops, or is it in a normal part of town (ie. no armed escorts needed going home)?

Well I'm not going to UMaryland this year, but I do volunteer at the dental clinic which is right next to the dental school. The area is fairly nice, it is a few blocks from Camden Yards and Ravens stadium. The whole campus is regularly patroled by campus police. I never have worried about my safety while I was around...however like many other places in Baltimore...a few blocks north of the school is not the best area. But overall I really like it and feel safe.

Hi Perc:

I have been accepted for the Class of 2007 at UMB College of Dental Surgery. The committee is still filling our class, but here are the stats of the 2002 entering class:

Overall GPA: 3.37
Science GPA: 3.19

DAT:
Academic Avg: 19.4
PAT: 18.4
Total Science: 19.2

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info drpduck. It would be fun to go to a few orioles games. btw, how far away did you live from campus? is the housing really expensive?
Thanks
Perc

Thanks smile_doctor for the stats. Hopefully I can join you there!

Nice name Percocet~!!!! 😉

Percocet- I am a sophomore in college, in balt county, so I commute once a week to volunteer at the hospital dental clinic. I really haven't researched housing much, but I know UMaryland has some on campus dorms and apartments....you can check it out on their site. BtW-Its nice to hear some future D-1's coming to UMaryland, I won't be applying for a couple more years but it would be nice to know some dental students there.

Hey, I also was accepted into the class of 2007 at the UMB school of dental surgery. From what I've heard from a friend of mine that attends the medical school at maryland, housing is actually relatively cheap in the area. Apparently there are also several newer apartment buildings being built/renovated right around the campus. I know baltimore pretty well and I wouldnt call the area extremely nice or extremely not nice. If you go a few blocks to the south it is one of the nicer areas in baltimore with the inner harbor and camden yards. If you go a few blocks to the north though, you will come accross a far less "affluent" area. I do think the area is pretty good though, because you can feel safe going to school there but you still have a large population of potential patients located quite close.

Wow this is really great to hear all these people on SDN that are going to attend UM please keep us posted on what you think of the school....I can't wait until its my chance to go!

Hey, Smile_doc & Rovert.

I am going to Maryland too. Glad to know you as classmates

awwwww yeah! Count me in as part of the Maryland Class of 2007! 😎 😎 😎

Congrats to all of my future classmates: RSXer, bres, Rovert...

Let's keep 'em coming for Maryland!

Hey guys! In the mail today I received a letter from Dean Stohler congradulating me on deciding to goto maryland. So, they got my deposit, and I really am going to be a dental student at maryland next year. I am so excited!! Woooohoooo!

So, so far we have smile_doctor, RSXer, bres and myself (Rovert) who have decided to attend maryland. Is there anyone else out there who plans on joining us at maryland?

Sounds great Rovert! I just sent out my acceptance letter/picture/$300 today via registered mail. I'll look out for a similar letter you got from Dean Stohlar in the coming weeks.

Hey, any of you thought of places to live yet? Cost of living is so cheap (compared to DC), so I'm excited about getting a place! But, a friend of mine who bought a house just 2-3 blocks east of Inner Harbor got his place burglarized! 😱

Do you plan on being in walking distance? driving distance? on-campus housing?

Glad to know you all (smile_doc, Rsxter and Rovert) again!!!

I started looking for the place to live already. I might live within walking distance since lots of frens told me that during the 1st and 2nd year of dental school, no time for traffic and driving.
Anyways, the nearest one I found so far is "marlboro classic and redwood square", only 3 min away from the dental building on foot. And they automatically approve and place us on the VIP(?) list without the application fee if we bring the letter of acceptance. one bed ranges from 880 to 1135 and two bed from 1165 to 1325. It's a little bit expensive comparing to the other apts near the campus but it seems pretty safe and close.

If you need their phone number, please let me know.

you guys plan to visit the school again?

I plan on living at least within the distance of a short drive.

Burgularized, huh? Not good. I hear that several neighborhoods surrounding the school are economically depressed. This means that crimes of opportunity may happen. I guess we need to learn which areas are the safest.

Thanks for the info, Bres. I'd like the Marlboro number if you have it. Rent sounds pretty expensive for 1 bedroom, considering that the living allowance for student loans is limited to around $1300/month. I plan on visiting Baltimore again soon to look for a place to live.

Let me know if you guys find anything that looks promising.

Just out of curiousty, what attracted you guys to the University of Maryland? I have an interview there soon but I'm not sure if I want to attend it (financial reasons for one part) as I have gotten into some other schools and not sure what the school has to offer. Any input would be helpful!

Congrats to people who made it into Maryland, I might be going there too:clap:

Sorry for my late response, Smile_doc.

their phone number is 410-659-6600. 410 W. Lombard St. Baltimore, MD 21201. They have a website too "southernmanagement.com".

Did you receive anything else (like information about orientation, etc.) except the confirmation of deposit from Maryland?

Bres:
I received a congrats letter from Dean Stohler today. I'm sure that orientation info will probably not go out for at least a couple of more months.

Has anyone started applying for financial aid yet?

Congrats to all of you who are going to Maryland! It would be nice to get to know you guys since I'm a future Maryland dental applicant (hopefully!!!!). I go to college not too far outside the city, If any of you have questions about Balt in general please PM me, once again congrats on all of your hard work!

One of my coworkers is offering me he place when she moves out in July. It's on the corner of W Cross St and W Hamburg St. Does anyone know this area? She said it's a few blocks West of Ravens Stadium. Just wanted to know if this is a safe part of town. Its a house for around $800/month!! It sounds like a great deal, but I'm wondering if its too good to be true.

I haven't done FAFSA yet, but plan to next month. I'm not expecting much help there since I've worked all of last year...so my 2002 income will really decrease my "financial need" from their perspective. Have any of you completed it already?

Dr. Kulkarni, I chose Maryland because of basically one factor: best bang for the buck. Going out of state for me would require me to do the military scholarship. The only school that I would consider that for was UPENN and UCSF. When those 2 didn't work out for me, I looked at all the schools I was accepted in. The 3 I liked were UPitt, Maryland, and Columbia. Columiba, I basically liked it because of New York. I had a great time at UPitt and it would be atough decision between UPitt and Maryland. Since Maryland has a great clinical reputation, some research opportunity, and has a new clinical building scheduled to open in 2005, Maryland edged UPitt out in my mind. After factoring in money issues, Maryland made the best sense.

I'm from the DC area and know the Baltimore area bit. The city is sooo much better than it was say 7-8 years ago. Although Baltimore is not the most exciting city in the world, I'm happy with what it has to offer. I also have a few friends in the area too, so I know I'm coming in with a little support system.

~PJ

Lets see... why did I want to come to maryland? Well, there's many reasons. The first reason is similar to RSXer. I am a maryland resident, so financially going to school here is far advantageous. Secondly, I was looking for a good clinical school. Maryland has a reputation for an excellent clinical education. Even Mark Lombard, at my temple interview, told me that I would be getting an excellent clinical education if I went to maryland (He saw I was a maryland resident and probably assumed I applied to both schools). Another factor in my decision was that I talked to many dentists and they all gave a very strong endorsment to maryland (and yes, many were biased because they went there). Many dentists though, specifically told me that when they hire other dentists for their practices or seek dentist to refer to, they prefer a maryland educated dentist over one at temple (which was one of my other top choices). Nothing against temple though, of course, but I was point-blank told in many instances, that maryland is a better school.

There are several other personal reasons that I want to attend maryland. Alot of my family lives in columbia, maryland, which is just about 15 minutes from the dental school. I just graduated undergrad at the university of maryland college park (Go Terps!!!), so alot of my friends live around the area (college park is about 45 minutes from the dental school). I like baltimore alot. It has many of the features of a large city, but the dental schools location makes it extremely easy to leave the city if I so desire.
One final reason for my interest in maryland was the fact that maryland was interested in me. I started off college with very poor grades. After comming to the conlusion that I wanted to follow a career in dentistry, and after dealing with some personal issues, I completely turned my life around and started earning excellent grades and had amazing dental experiences. At my interview I was asked about this turn-around, and instead of raised eye-brows, I received peoples trust and support. Everyone at my interview not only seemed excited about their working at/attending maryland, but also seemed excited about the possibility of me attending maryland. This made me feel extremely welcome and gives me the feeling that there is a good support system set up at maryland in order to help the students succeed. Additionally, people such as Dr. Margaret Wilson and students who have visited college park over the last few years have given off lots of enthusiam about the university of maryland. This enthusiasm is quite contagous. For all these reasons, and more, including the addition of a new building, I have chosen to attend the university of maryland baltimore college of dental surgery. (wow... that sounded like a brochure, didnt it!?!)

In other news... after looking at the length of this post it is clear I have entirely too much free time on my hands. I'm excited though, because on thurseday I am starting work as a clinical assistant for an orthodontist around baltimore. He was very excited to have a future dental student working for him, so I think things will work out well.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask, and I will answer as honestly as possible.

Hey there fellow BCDS'ers. I received a housing packet from the school this weekend. It contains an apaprtment guide and a housing survey. I know I asked this question earlier, but maybe some of you have had a chance to look into housing a bit more since then.

Anyway, I was just wondering, where you all are planning to live. I'm trying to find a 1-bedroom place within walking distance to the school with a parking garage. Anyone know of apartment complexes similar to this or otherwise?

Thanks,
PJ

Hey PJ:

I received my housing packet in the mail today. I've been talking to a realtor and am considering buying a townhome if I can find an affordable one in a decent area near the school. I'll be flying up to Baltimore in a few weeks to take a look at some of the different neighborhoods and to check out apartment living as well.
I'll let you know if I find anything. It seems like anything with a parking garage/deck will be expensive for a 1 bedroom. Let me know what you find.

I'm presently living at this apartment complex. This one has a parking garage and it's 5 or 6 blocks from the school. Here is the website http://www.themunsey.com

Thanks for the info! smile-doctor, I actually have the same idea. It may come out cheaper in the long run to purchase a home in Baltimore than to rent out for 4 years. Oh, but am I ready to be a homeowner? 😱 😱

Sam, my god! The Munsey is pretty sweet! How long have you been living there? Any other apartments that you can tell me about? At first glance, the Munsey loks real nice....a bit pricey, but looks like you get what you pay for 🙂

I actually might go up to Baltimore this weekend to check out some of these apartment buildings. Will let you all know what I find out if I go.

Okay, I've been able to go up to B-more for the past 2 Saturdays to check some places out. First of all, buying an apartment is out of the question at least for this year. As much as I'd like to, the places that are available in the areas I like are still out of my price range 🙁

So, I went to whole bunch of apartment complexes and have found some good ones. Most of them are 3-5 blocks east of school between Howard and Charles St. Marlboro Classic is just 2-3 blocks away from the school and the rooms are pretty nice, so I think that's going to be my new home.

Anyone else wanna share what they've been able to find?

Also, I wsa wondering when we should expect to hear about our financial aid packages. I sent FAFSA in the last week of Feb and haven't received any word from Maryland yet.

First of all, I'm so glad I came across these dental forums!! Otherwise I'd never come across you guys! I'll also be attending BCDS this fall!!! 🙂)))) Can't wait to meet u guys!

Well guess what? I've also been accepted into those exact same schools (with the addition of Detroit Mercy)... and although I've paid my 1st deposit to UPitt, I've concluded that UM would be my best choice for the exact same reasons u've stated -- So off to Baltimore I go!! However, without resorting to rumors, I've read on some other thread that despite UM's reliance on new dental school building to attract&retain applicants, a fellow mentioned being told by a faculty member that its unlikely our class will get access to the clinics in our 3rd year,.. that would certainly be upsetting, wat do you guys think?

stefan

Hiya'll. I am located at BCDS currently as a postgraduate resident in advanced general dentistry. It's going well so far. For those of coming to BCDS, congratulations! The construction going on next door (due to be completed by 2005) is a bit annoying sometimes, but most people handle it quite well. Some students live on campus e.g. Pascault Row or Student Union, and some live across MLK Blvd to west. Expect to pay (if sharing with other room mates) around $400 for the rent plus utilities. Check out the UMAB website www.umaryland.edu housing options. Good luck!

mighty molar,

can you tell me a bit about the baltimore student union?
btw, it's co-ed, right?

James J

I know that it's co-ed but the girls' floor is on a separate floor and may require separate security access key. (Hmm... why do you ask?) The room is decently sized with a sofa-bed. You share the bathroom and the kitchen. There is a garage building where you can park your car overnight. BSU isn't that bad - most people would complain of its' sheer size though... I lived in Pascault Row (closer to the Dental School than BSU) for a while. I guess BSU would give you a bit more sociable life compared to Pascault Row! Just don't go into sharing an efficiency at Pascault Row with someone you don't know. It's VERY small and would not afford you any privacy. In that aspect, I guess BSU would be better. Go and visit the website, or even better, come and have a look yourself before committing for a whole year (they don't give you refund!)...

Wow...its been awhile since I checked this thread. I'm glad I did.

Anyway, congrats Stefan on making your choice! See ya in a couple of months!!

With regards to the BSU: I actually stayed there for a week a couple of summers ago when I went to the dental scchool's Operation Dental Career. I would definitely advise you to check it out for yourself before committing to it. I found it to be a little too cramped. But, I didn't mind the shared bathrooms and shared kitchens and stuff. Actually I kinda like it 'cause I'm sure that you'd get to know the people on your floor much better....so it s more of a community/dorm-style of living.

Hope this helps!
~PJ

And for the reason why I came back to this thread:

I am in the process of finding a lender for loans and I thought this might be helpful for some of you that are still looking:

Check out the bottom of this thread . Smile
_doctor pointed out the UMB Stafford Loan Lender. After taking a look at the discounts it gives, it looks like its your best bet for saving money.

If there's anyone else who's using Lenders other than UMB, can you let us know if their discounts are comparable?

Thanks,
PJ

It seems like a lot of non-Maryland residents get into UMB. How many out-of-state residents do they take?

I'm sure it varies from year to year, but the school accepted about 56 non-residents (including international students) in 2002. This was more than 50% of the total enrollment. Maryland is a small state, and I'm sure that they appreciate the revenue supplied by out-of-state tuition.

Whoa!! Well, I rarely check this board, but I thought I'd check it on my break from Anatomy studying.....
I was just checking some of the old posts (back during application days) and it made me feel nostalgic of simpler times (sniff sniff). Arg....anyway, I thought it would be fun to see if I can figure out who else from our class checks this board. I think I've figured out everyone who posted on this thread except for maybe one.

See you all tomorrow! Now, back to skull studying 🙁

To all you guys at UMaryland that have been there for a year or longer do you have any recommendations for places to live outside of the downtown area? I have been accepted for the class of 2008 and I have four kids so schools and neighborhoods are very important in my considerations. Any advice is welcome. When I interviewed there someone mentioned that a few students with families lived in Ellicot City. Any info on that area as far as the commute, schools etc?

Hi, congradulation on all your acceptances.
I scheduled an interview in January.
What do you recommend me wearing? I heard it is the coolest month of the year.

How likely do they accept out-of-state applicants?

Thanks for your replies.

Am I missing something with the Class of 2007 stuff? I thought it was 2008?

I have an interview at UM pretty soon, anybody got any advice, impressions, etc.. just pm me

Thanks yo

Radioheadblue

when is your interivew date?
mine is Jan 14th

Well, it's already snowed here in b'more, but the weather is absolutely ridiculous and changes from day to day, so it could be in the 60s even. I'd check a few days beforehand, but yeah, we do have the four seasons here.
And the thread was started last year, yeah, i was definitely confused about that myself.
G'luck guys!

thanks for clarifying.
It is kinda scary to see so many people got accepted already.
Since I m from California, the chance might be slimmer for me.
Have you guys have interviews yet?

SpringHaze,
may i know if you are a student or applying this year too?

I've already applied and been accepted to UMaryland (yay!) and hopefully you'll be accepted too! I mean, I'm out of state myself and I hear UMaryland gives alot more acceptances to out of state than many other schools.
But I'm finishing up my senior year at Hopkins in Baltimore right now, so I'm literally like 10 minutes away from the school and I have pretty indepth knowledge on baltimore and the surrounding area. Oof, and weather again, today is a perfect example. Until like 3 it was sunny, a bit windy, and in the gorgeous high 50s. Then the clouds came and the wind really kicked up and I'd say it's in the low 40s now. Every day, even every few hours is a friggin guessing game here.

I have an interview on Feb 24. Hope they still have spots open that late in the game.

i used to live in maryland and visit UMBC and the dental school which it is around quite often. Its no where near as bad as the Towson area, but it is a "ghetto" hood. There are nice things around though...say inner harbor and DC is only a drive away. Enjoy it though, and best of luck in the future...
Doug

Interview: Febuary 24th
If there won't be spots then why do they invite you for an interview? Do you think they would tell an interviewee a few days before, whether they have spots or not?

Radiohead

I have just heard on SDN that a coupld of people went on late interviews and at the end of the interview they were told that it was for a waitlist spot. I'm going regardless because Maryland is my top chioce.

Accepted doesnt mean students will go there.
They might have decided to go elsewhere, for instance.
It is somewhat hard to believe, but it is true.

I hope they still have openings, though I know they conduct a lot of interviews already.

Just be your best. That's the only thing we could do.
