Congrats! You'd probably find more friends in the Carrib forum on the International section.

Hey,

I'm headed to Ross in Sept. 2010. Just found out on Fri! Is anyone else headed there? I'd really like to chat and get to know my future classmates.

No I usually go to TJ Maxx. I feel their selection is better.

not to scare you but i read that carribean schools are BS. mds, get top choice residency, then DOS. also md and DO schools are churning out more doctors then available residencys as it is..carribean schools arent gonna get matched. i also wouldnt want a carribean doctor. i know i sound harsh but i just thought id mention this before you spend a lot on ross.

ross is considered a top choice carribean school however.top 4 school.

An interesting article, with sombering statistics, on Ross University School of Medicine

hm...with the absurd increase in cost and statistics (along with the stigma of "backdooring" your way into an MD), I would probably choose a different career if I didn't have the stats to get into an American MD/DO program. But for those who are set on becoming MD's and nothing else, I think Caribbean is a fantastic option.

So someone starts a thread about being excited to start medical school and looking for future classmates and everyone posts how they omg would NEVER ever go there because it's so horrific!!!!

I hope those posts made you feel better about yourselves.

Haha. I agree that it's distasteful; however, this is SDN... what'd ya expect?
I did find that article interesting though... If it weren't for the stigma and questions about quality, it'd be an amazing place to go to school!
-- Think: all things you like about FL, but better.... (And easier to get into.)

OP, you'll have fun down there. Good luck!

SDN isn't a politically correct sanctuary where stigma and stereotypes are excluded, people call it as they see it and the posts that you quoted aren't trying to bring the OP down but paying light to the stigma. The OP should get used to it though, the stigma will follow them around their entire career (or at least after through residency).

There is a forum for Caribbean students where the OP would probably get a better response.

Did anyone bother to read the followup comments on that article?

"One needs only to look at the Ross Education system to judge its effectiveness. They do no employ a pass/fail system as do most US schools. It is much easier to just pass then to make sure you get the minimum score to move on while being competitive for the future. I am a current Ross Student in my fourth year and doing rotations in NYC. I have worked with and around US students and have found them quite knowledgeable in BOOK SCIENCE. However, if you ask a lot of programs they will say Ross students excel in the clinical part. Standardised tests are standardised for a reason and if passed mean the the student is ready for the "next step" as is the case with the USMLE."

And here's a great point also:

"By the way Ross has a poor graduation rate because their admission standards are not high, but once those students with low scores get to the island, they get kicked off pretty quickly. I think it's a fair way to do things, Ross makes money and gives a student with poor scores a chance, and if the student doesn't capitalize on the chance then he/she's gone. It is a last resort and like I said, those who are not cut for it will be gone quickly and most of the ones who end up staying go on to become good doctors"

I wouldn't be too worried if I had no alternative but to go to Ross...but only because I have faith in my ability to take responsibility for my own education.
