Hi all,
Currently based in Washington DC and have applied broadly with no huge regional preference, but my partner just found out from his work that he's able to move offices if he wants to, in big cities like Boston, SF, LA, Chicago, NYC. I've already applied to 34 schools, some of which are in those areas. I'm thinking of adding more schools in these areas, but is it too late? If I choose between 3-5 schools to add, I think I can complete them within a week.

MCAT: 524, research hours 1100 in one lab and 520 in another, clinical experience 370, nonclinical volunteer 300

Thanks in advance for any tips/advice!

  1. cGPA 3.94, and sGPA 3.89
  2. MCAT 524 (130/130/132/132)
  3. AZ resident
  4. not URM
  5. T10 undergrad
  6. Clinical experience 370 hrs
  7. research hours 1100 in one lab and 520 in another. 1 national conference poster, 1 oral presentation. 1 third author pub
  8. Shadowing 80 hrs
  9. Non-clinical volunteering 300 hrs
  10. Other extracurricular activities: classical musician part of the conservatory exchange program at my school, social justice

Welcome to the forums.

It would help if you had a WAMC profile. Not everything is about your metrics. You probably already have interviews, right? How many more schools are we talking about? I mean, most people would be applying to schools in these major cities if they have a strong mission fit.

AAMC says this:
You may add medical school choices or designations to your submitted application. Medical school additions or program changes can be made at any time if the deadline for the school you wish to add has not passed. A fee will apply for each medical school addition.

You will have to look at each school you are interested in adding to see when their deadline for submitting the primary is.
It's probably coming up soon. While you're searching, note their secondary deadline too.

Your partner "might" be able to move offices, but might not, so I think you should base your planning on what you now know.

Also, keep in mind, you can do visiting student clerkships once you pass your classes and have the opportunity with elective in your final years. Also, your partner may move again when you have to consider residency applications. You know your situation better if the job will be permanent.

Hi, thank you so much for the insights! I'm new the to the forums so wasn't sure what a WAMC profile was. Hope the edits I just made to the post are sufficient.

I have 6 IIs so far. Only two are in areas within a 2 hr radius of an office where my partner could move. Three are in my home state of AZ.

I was thinking of choosing 3-5 additional schools. I'm considering Kaiser (but maybe a long shot), Loyola, NY Medical College, Rush, UCLA. A handful of others, maybe.

Thank you for reminding me about visiting clerkships -- that is something I had not considered.

With this being said, do you think that sending in primaries/secondaries before the end of September is too much of a shot in the dark? If I do decide to apply to more schools, what types of things should I look for to decide whether a school would auto-reject me based on how late I am applying?

Hi there,

Really appreciate you taking the time to read + respond! Thanks for the reminder to check deadlines. It looks like most of the schools I am considering in these areas have an Oct 1 or later primary deadline, so I am near the cusp. Was going to send primaries, if I decide to, this weekend. Do you have any insights as to whether submitting so close to some of the schools' Oct 1 deadline would result in an auto-reject? I don't believe I have an "X factor" to overcome any significant stigmas related to late submissions, if that makes sense.

Based on what my partner has told me, it seems like it is easy to move offices, with the exception of their NYC office.

Great job with the interviews. In-state advantage is strong, but you will have to do the math if any cost-savings with IS tuition can be used to help you sustain your relationship with your partner. Again, knowing your options for residency is important.

In the absence of a profile, check your non-clinical volunteering for Rush, Loyola, and Kaiser at least. You will need hundreds of service orientation hours. I don't know what you have, but 6 interviews are already quite a lot on your plate.

Hi there,

Thanks so much for linking the WAMC article! I updated my original post to include the WAMC info/format.

Yes, I have heard about Rush and Loyola being service-heavy. I have about 300 nonclinical volunteer hours, which I've heard is on the lower end of what many successful applicants have for these service-heavy schools. Thanks again for your advice. A lot of valuable feedback to consider.

NYMC, University of Chicago and Northwestern might bite. Loyola and Rush are not worth the fee. Hours are not there for Rush and both of them would not expect you to realistically attend based on the type of matriculating students they ultimately usually have.

Hi, thanks for your comments. Really appreciate your time!

Yes, I had not applied for Rush originally because I didn't see the fit, with them being very service-heavy and me not having nearly the numbers to match.

Do you have any recommendations? Do you imagine that most schools would auto-reject me given how late in the cycle I am?

It's not super late. I submitted a secondary around this time, OOS, and it ended up being my first interview. 6 IIs already is promising for you

Consider schools that are slightly less competitive and not far from cities, such as NYMC and UMass, where you and your partner could live between the school and the city.

The 3 I mentioned. I agree with UMass as well. If you did not already apply to Boston, that's worth trying.

Hm, thank you for that insight! Glad to know it is not too late yet.

Thank you for the tip on UMass. And great suggestion for living between the school and city. Definitely am more of a suburb person than city person, haha.

Oh, I see now. Didn't understand at first that you were suggesting those three! Thank you for the advice!
