Anyone have a Plan B?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
1. Apply again x2

2. Apply for PA( probably wouldn't happen considering admissions want loads of prior clinical experience)

3. Look into podiatry

4. Freelance Writer (That would be fun)

5. Intern for an organization I believe in, probably in DC

Head off to graduate school, unless i think i can apply again...if not medicine, I'll probably continue to take some kind of masters degree in a biology related subject.

Try at least once more at MD

plan B: DO / Caribbean

plan C: professor

plan D: underwater fire safety inspector

my major is engineering but I definitely don't want to be an engineer

Step 1: Become a republican
Step 2: Become a semi-attractive female (this is the hard step)
Step 3: Become vice president on some ticket
Step 4: Write a book explaining why its the main candidates fault why we lost.
Step 5: Profit!

In my case, now that I know my application better, it seems like I probably won't need engineering as a fallback and now I wish I had done biochem instead of chem-E. But, I do like cheme, it's just a lot more work for someone who wants to go to med school.

Yea, but at least you would not mind doing engineering as a career. That person said they would "definitely not be an engineer," yet they are still doing an engineering major. Seems odd to major in something that difficult if you are not even interested.

I already have a CCNA (cisco certified network associate) certificate. It is for working with the routing and switching of networks and what not, so that will be my fallback as I am fairly good at it. Not sure if I ever would give up trying to be a doctor to pursue that, as it really does not interest me; however, if the time comes then it will be my fallback.

I'll continue killing people from a helicopter. Until I retire, then do medevac.

Well I want a MD for infectious disease, I'v always wanted to work at the CDC or something similar.

So if I can't get that I'll go for a Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology. You work in the same place, just a different part of the building.

Still though, MD would be really nice...

i got into medschool already, but i always wanted to work on a farm or a ranch.

I would go into clinical research... people still respect you like a doctor but you don't have the responsibility of having a life in your hands... also a better family life.
however, research is annoying 90% of the time, data is boring to work with and I'd rather work with people as an MD.

Same as most ppl on this post, I'd do an SMP retake my MCATs and reapply to med school.

Caribbean or graduate school then reapply to medical school.

if this whole medicine thing doesn't work out, what would you do?

I just learned the sheer amount of people who are rejected from every school they apply to and I began thinking what would I do if I get into that situation.

I think I would apply again and if that didn't take, I would do 1 of 2 things:

The goof: Try to join a federal agency and do something dangerous.

More realistically: Apply to dental school and see where that takes me...

the "medicine thing" will work if you want it to... just how badly do you want it?

there was a guy in my class 34years old who applied every year after graduation for 9 years. rejected everytime until his 10th try. his overall gpa was 2.80, and his science gpa was 2.75. im not sure what his mcat was but he took it may times (improving each time). he made it!

so... how bad do you want it?

federal agency isn't easy to get into, and you will have to have some professional degree, or 3 years equal to thereof, and some language (more of a requirement than being a plus). not to mention the background check much more extensive then medicine...

dental school? harder since selection is less...

For all the people stating "dental school" as their Plan B, you are really misinformed. Dental schools tend to be more picky than Medical schools. And there are less of them to choose from. Keeping thinking that though I guess...

Yep. I said this earlier in the thread. But to reiterate; dental school and PA school are not really a back up plan since they are as hard or harder to get into than med school. Buy like the above said, whatever you gotta think to get through...

Law school, so I can sue all of the people that did get into to medical school

I know you are probably joking, but still, I don't advise anyone goes to law school unless they get into a top ten. There are way too many lawyers. At this point I would say law school is one of the biggest scams going in higher education.

Very very true, My professor told me about a guy who went to my school, didn't do great on mcats OR gpa (had a LizzyM score of 58 or lower).

He ended up doing an MHS, an SMP and then retaking MCATS for a fourth time or something.

Ended up: Top of his class in whatever med school (it wasn't a top 15 med school), then did a residency at Harvard (I guess Mass General?) and ended up a professor at Harvard Med.

SO you are right, it will work out you just have to put a LOT of time (and lets face it a lot of money too) into it if you are not med school material just yet.

JUST KNOW THAT YOU CAN DO IT.
