Just to give you an idea... I graduated with a DPT in 2005 (and had $130K debt with undergrad/grad school loans). I moved to NYC after graduation and started off in a private outpatient clinic for $55K. After a year, I decided NYC wasn't for me and moved back home to Texas. When I told my employer I was moving, they offered me $70K to stay.
I went home and signed up with a travel agency. They offered me $38/hr for 40 hour weeks + bonuses + benefits for a 13 week contract in a LTAC in an area in south Texas where the demand for Physical Therapy is high. After I finished my contract, I ended up staying at the LTAC for a year starting at $90K with $10K signing bonus + benefits. This was in 2006.
I decided to do my own contract work in different facilities in that and surrounding towns working in LTACs, in-patient rehab, outpatient ortho and peds, and home health for the next 2 years. My salary ranged between $120-130K. (2007-2009)
Small town life was getting to me so I moved to Austin where I worked in a private outpatient setting for $72K + benefits. For many reasons, I left that clinic and am now doing home health receiving $65-70/visit. (2009-2010)
Like the previous post stated, the money is out there. You just have to be willing to work for it.
