I was wondering if anyone has interviewed and heard from Kansas...I'm personally not applying yet (this is where I want to go), but I was wondering for those of you who have applied there what were your stats, state of residence, and experiences you've had...also if I could get your HDL/LDL counts while I'm at it that would be grrreeeaat...

I'm curious as well. I just became complete on friday, I'm in-state with a 28/3.89 and hoping for an interview 😀 . Well, just hoping for an interview ANYWHERE....I am soooooo ready to get in.... 😍 Can't wait for those sleepless nights studying anatomy 😀 (kidding about anatomy 😉 )

so far KU has only sent acceptances to the EDP folks. they just finished the first round of regular decision interviews and are supposed to be sending decisions out for those folks during the week of thanksgiving.

i got in early decision. my gpa was 3.35 (due to a very poor freshman year), mcat 35, research, lots of leadership experience, lots of clinical experiences from volunteering and shadowing.

if you've anymore questions about KU, i'd be happy to try and field them. there are also quite a few med students at KU who post on SDN who are friendly and will likely answer any questions about their experiences at KUMC.

ps. my ldl/hdl is 101/49.

I'm right with you there as far as being anxious to experience long days and nights to achieve something of this magnitude...your stats are really good

Wow, congratulations...KU is the only place i've ever wanted to go...I've had a bad semester myself in the past, it's good to know that it's seen as "just a bad semester" rather than the end of the world as some schools see it 👍

i interviewed at ku on nov. 2, and i am one of those waiting to hear something from them during the week of thanksgiving. they told us that they will send out a few acceptances to people at the top of the current applicant pool, a few rejections to those at the bottom, and the rest get waitlisted and will have to wait until march to hear about a decision. (and i guess they repeat this process every month). i dont know if i'll be one of the lucky few but im just hoping for a happy thanksgiving 🙂 . (31, 3.89 bio major)

hey pleebie, i think that if your interview went well you have a really good shot at getting in w/o a waitlist. let us know when you hear!

Phleebie, you look like you have some great stats and if you had a good interview, you're going to be gold before Thanksgiving. I had an interview in November also and am waiting very anxiously to see how thick that envelope will be in the next 1.5 weeks. Of course looking at your stats makes me less optimistic that I am going to hear a good response before Thanksgiving but I'm ever hopeful. (29, 3.35, bad start to college and usual health-related ECs).

Good luck to all and Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Hello everyone

I am a first year at KUMC. I'd be happy to answer any questions about the school or give you my honest impressions/thoughts...

just send me a PM 🙂

hope you all get acceptance letters soon!

sorry to hear about this, was it pre or post secondary?

I'm an out of state and was approved for a secondary. haven't heard anything since

Sorry if I missed this in an earlier post, but I was wondering if you got a secondary/interview before your rejection. I'm out of state for KU too, but recently submitted my secondary. I'm just curious how far you got. Thanks!

When were you complete?

khenon, I was complete at KU in mid-sept, including all LORs. Its been a month since our MCATs were released. I don't know what their process is, i.e, review in-state first, holds, etc, but I'll probably contact them soon.

I saw an earlier post that said it took about 3 weeks from when their application was complete to when they got an interview. Granted I believe they were in state. Did your email have a listing of when the interview dates were? I didn't get my secondary until the first week of Nov. and there seemed to be a sense of urgency to get my app done so I could be given proper notice for an interview (obviously, only if they like me after the secondary). Anyway, the interview dates were the first week of December, and the 1st and 3rd weeks of January. I also saw a post that the first round of interviews only included one out of stater. I believe the second round of interviews is this first week of december, but I don't know that for a fact. Well good luck. I'm not "complete" yet, but I've submitted everything. They just need to process it all, and luckily I only had to use my "dependable" LOR's, so I know they've at least sent them. I hope you hear some good news soon. Take care.

I too had a 29 MCAT, and if you just look at the last two years worth of work I have a GPA of 3.7 in a double chemistry/math major. I'm doing the entire double major in three years. Last college before that 20 years ago and, shall we say, not my best effort during my sophomore year. Didn't finish, started over. As for health-related ECs, I've spent the past 15 years in pre-hospital health care, 5 as firefighter/EMT and 10 as a paramedic, ACLS instructor, PALS instructor, yada yada yada. Rejected pre-secondary.

Thanks for the response. I'm sorry about your rejection . . . that really sucks. If it makes you feel any better I've gotten 5 pre-secondary rejections, and 4 of them were this last week. Yeah, my self-esteem is pretty low right now. Anyway, I wish you the best in the rest of your applications. Take care.

i'm a first year at KU, so pm me if you have any questions. i would love a distraction from my studying.

anyways, here's the stats i got in with: 29 mcat, 3.8 GPA, a lot of healthcare/leadership experience. i interviewed regular decision with an interviewer i absolutely did not get along with, and got the "wait until february" answer.

if anyone is interest in primary care in kansas i would recommend ***. its such a nice feeling to go in each month and pick up my stipend.

for real. if you've got questions about the details talk to the financial aid people at KU. basically they pay you REAL good to go to med school (tution + generous stipend)

in return you give 4 years of practice in "rural kansas" in IM, FP, Peds, or EM (that's right, EM!!!!). what's funny is that there are only four counties in Kansas that aren't considered "rural" (douglas, johnson, sedgwick, and shawnee). word is they are having a really tough time getting people into the program and so it's not particularly competative.

for some people this sounds like hell, but for people like lilmo and I who grew up in small town kansas and plan on going back anyway, it's a tremendous deal.

so look into it. just don't take my spot. 😀

yeah, my email had the same interview dates. At least we'll know where we stand with KU by the end of december since they don't interview into the spring. Anyway, best of luck to you and to everyone else in this process.

I was complete on 10/22 and got an invite to interview on 11/9/04.
My interview is 12/1/04.

Born and raised in a small (very, pop <200) town, GPA 3.38 due to a slow finish at KSU when I was originally wanting to go to PA school summer 2003. Worked for about six months and realized that MD is for me. Got a 33 on the MCAT and have quite a bit of healthcare releated EC's but no reasearch. The *** program sounds perfect for me, dont ever plan to leave KS.

I think I have a good shot at getting in as long as I don't botch the interview. Anybody have a list of KU interview questions that they could send me?

Check out the student interview section of this website: http://www.studentdoctor.net/interview/interview_read.asp

A few of us have submitted the questions that they asked us during interviews this year. Its really a laid back interview, so don't stress too much. Just be up to date on pertinent health care topics.

Some of us will be finding out our fate within the next week or so. Lets keep each other posted when those letters come in! :luck: :luck:

Hi, I thought I might post this for the out-of-staters. I'm not big on giving stats but I do have a 3.7 GPA with an average MCAT for KU so nothing competitive. I've done months of international missions, strong EC's, college athlete, many internships, research at Wash U in STL, etc. I was complete on June 20th, received my secondary on August 30th and I submitted it three days later. I received an interview invite Oct. 1st for an Oct. 18th interview. I received my hold letter on November 8th. Hope this helps!!! So I'll let you know what happens in March!

(oh, yeah, and in case you didn't understand-I am an out of state applicant)

Thanks for that out-of-state update, dulcinea. So was your "hold" due to your out of state status (ie do all out of staters, that are not rejected, get put on hold until March)? I'm just curious if any out of staters are getting acceptances yet. I'm almost complete at KU . . . just have 1 more LOR. I sure hope I'm one of those interviews in January! 🙂 :luck:

The hold goes to anyone (out-of-state or in-state) who is not in the upper tier or very bottom tier of applicants. During our interview, they sat us down and explained that they have a ranking system, based on your stats, interview, etc. A few at the very top of the list are accepted within a few weeks, and a few at the bottom are rejected. The rest are put on hold until after the December, January and February interviews. Everyone will be told the final decision in March. Hope this helps.

Thanks eva! That did help. Did you get a "hold" notice too, or are you still waiting to hear? It looks like KU is going to be my only post-August score secondary, so I'm really hopin' for this one. I haven't gotten any post-secondary rejections yet, but I'm guessing they're coming too. I highly doubt the schools that still haven't sent me secondaries are going to . . . I'm probably at the bottom of some pile they haven't had time to reject yet! So, COME ON KU!! :luck:

Still waiting to hear, but I'm guessing that I'll be put on hold. I'll PM you when I find out. 🙂 :luck:

i think it sucks how KU puts most of the applicants on hold until next year.

let this be a lesson to future KU applicants who might be lurking. if you're in-state with stats that hover around the averages for KU, APPLY EARLY DECISION. from what I gather most of the ED folks I know (myself included) would have been put on hold during the regular decision process. KU likes to lock in in-staters early and as such they really really push the ED program.

i'm rooting for you guys. good luck.

i wouldnt worry too much about the whole "no research" thing. during my open interview at ku, i was asked what my biggest regret during college was, and i told them i most regretted not being involved in some form of research related to the field of medicine (i did research for two years with the kansas biological survey but it was all ecological/environmental stuff).

my interviewer then told me that she actually discourages pre-meds from doing research (unless they really want to do it) because "college is a time when young people should explore their interests and enjoy life, and not sit in a lab all day." this was a huge relief to me b/c i was really worried that my lack of medicine related research would hurt my chances (otherwise i have plenty of healthcare related EC's).

anyways, good luck at your interview and hopefully ill see you next year. 👍

I went to a "pre-med" seminar thing, and the research myth was dispelled there too. The woman (a director of a medical program) said that research is by no means a requirement of applying to medical school. Though she didn't outright discourage it, she wanted to make it clear that it gave you no advantage/disadvantage if you had research experience or not. Though it may add to your work/life experience, it's not something that HAS to be done to get you into medical school. It's much more important to have the GPA, MCAT score, good LOR's, and some clinical experience (to show that you know what you're getting in to). Those are the "core" requirements. Everything else is extra, and not required for admissions.

I read some earlier posts about the number of interviewee's at KUMC during the EDP events but I was wondering if all of you november interviewee's could tell me how many were in your group. Basically I want to know how many people are interviewing during each "set" of interviews.

I have a Dec 1st interview but I really would like to know if I got in before I leave in January for Texas for 10 weeks of military training.

So if about 50 people interview on the 1st-3rd of December, How many get accepted, denied, waitlisted?

Also I heard about the early, early acceptance to KU where you get accepted before your Junior year of college as long as you keep a >3.5 GPA and get at least a 24 MCAT. Any thoughts on this? I guess its a good way to lock in the in-staters, like everything else KU does, but isn't part of the student doctor experience the stress of the application and the interview?

When I went at the beginning of November, I'd say that there were about 20-25 people there on my interview day. There were interviews the day before and after as well. As for how many they accept within the next few weeks? I'd guess 5 max because they specifically said that they take just a few from the top of the list. How many they reject? Very few as well - from what I took from the interview, they will not reject you right away unless there is something blatantly obvious. Everyone else is put on hold.

You will most likely have to be patient just like the rest of us and wait until March.

I don't think that anyone knows exactly.

only 5? that seems a little low, but then again i have no clue. my guess would be 10 out of around 80 interviewees each month would get immediate acceptances.

if they only accept 5 applicants each month (nov, dec, jan, and feb)
then that means that only 20 spots in the class would be filled by march (not including ED people). i mean, doesn't that sound low? (considering most schools initially offer enough acceptances to fill their entire class).

i should repeat, though, that this is all just speculation. anyone else have any thoughts?

Hey Phleebie! You might be totally right. My guess was also pure speculation. If 10 were accepted each month, then they would have ~50 spots filled by March. That probably makes a little bit more sense. But I just keep thinking about how they said 'very few applicants' are accepted before March. I'll be seeing some KU med students this Friday. I'll ask them what they think! 🙂

Even though I know I have a sliver of hope of getting an acceptance right away, I feel like Lloyd Christmas in Dumb and Dumber..."one in a million?....sooo you're saying I have a chance...."

As long as we're speculating, any speculations on when the good/bad letter from KU will come? My money is Tuesday next week. Of course this hasn't stopped me from checking my mail twice a day....

Also I was talking to some med students and it seems the majority were notified in Feb/Mar.

are they interviewing in February? I hadn't heard that.

yea, and its a good bet that some of the people who get immediate acceptances wont even end up at ku. so i guess i wont be completely discouraged if/when i get put on hold. 🙂

Ohh..I must've missed that. The interview dates listing I saw ended in January.

This is pulled directly from an email that KU sent to me in August:

"For your information, following are the interview dates for the 2005 entering class:
October 18 and 19, 2004
November 1, 2, and 3, 2004
December 1, 2, and 3, 2004
January 5, 6, and 7, 2005
January 24, 25, and 26, 2005"

So I don't have anything showing Feb. interviews either. Doesn't matter anyways - we still wouldn't hear anything till March (unless we are some of the lucky ones).

Also, since KU typically interviews at least 400 people, there must be about 30 people per interview date. Plus those lucky EDPers! 🙂

Edit: Just found this info on a Princeton Review website:

All Kansas residents are sent secondary applications, while only about 10 percent of out-of-state applicants receive them. About 75 percent of Kansas residents and about 5 percent of out-of-state applicants are interviewed

Whats up peeps........its good to see so many of you interested in KU. I am a first year here (along w/ Trojandoctor and lilmo), and besides wishing you all luck in the wonderfully grueling app-process, I wanted to share with you guys some stuff that I observed from last year.

First off, try and be patient. Many people that I knew had to wait until March to get their good news. What evajaclynn says is true.....it seems as though the adcoms only accept a few people per interview group right off the back. So, if you get a letter telling you to wait until March, don't despair! There's still a good chance for you, and if you get waitlisted, I know for a fact that KU has a history of good waitlist movement.

So, even though the application process probably ranks among the most exciting and interesting parts of your lives right now don't forget to live your life up as much as possible......if you're finishing up college, kick it like no other, relax, unwind (as in, stay anti-stressed), spend time with your friends and family, and do all the stuff that you'll soon be missing. So feel free to drop me, or any of the other jaydocs on sdn, a PM, and remember to be patient. There'll definitely be more chances to be stressed down the road, so you might as well relax while you can :horns:

So feel free to drop me, or any of the other jaydocs on sdn, a PM, and remember to be patient. There'll definitely be more chances to be stressed down the road, so you might as well relax while you can :horns:

Well then, perhaps you'll make an appearance on Friday night?

a cameo on friday night????? As much as I'd love to, I'm taking a hiatus and heading off to lawrence for the evening to celebrate a friend's 21st......but don't despair G, I'll be back before the symptoms of Felipe-withdrawal start ravaging your body :😀:
