Anyone heard from KU?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Hey everyone...I have been reading yalls posts for the last few days. I was born and raised in KC and have an interview at KU Med on Friday. I thought I would be fine but the nerves have started going a little crazy...For lack of better words - I'm about to wet myself (This is my first med school interview). Just wondering if anyone had any last minute advice about the interviews.

Hi Sty! I agree completely with Felipe. Try to relax. KU was my first interview as well (and my only interview). I would review the following links:

If you need to brush up on your ethics info: http://eduserv.hscer.washington.edu/bioethics/topics/index.html

For KU interview questions that previous interviewees have had: http://www.studentdoctor.net/interview/interview_read.asp

They will ask at least a few ethics questions. All of my interviewers asked me where I saw myself in 10 years. I was asked even asked about my favorite movie.

I think that they like to see your personality come through, so just try to be yourself. I was extremely nervous, but things went pretty well. Good luck and let us know how it goes! :luck: :luck: :luck:

😀 Congrats Eva! I'm very happy for you because I know that you wanted this to work out with your boyfriend being there and everything! I'm sure you had a great thanksgiving-you had a lot to be thankful for! It was also encouraging to hear about your boyfriend-he had to wait a LONG time! Great job!!! 👍

Thanks Dulcinea! And I look forward to seeing if you get in there too!!! I know that you are happy with where you have already gotten in, but it would be cool to see you at KU as well. 🙂

Sty...I'd have to agree with Evajaclynn. Review some ethical issues but I think the whole point of the interview is to let your personality out. Most of my questions were, what do you do in your free time? what was the last book you read? I know you can't help but be nervous but the interviewers are pretty nice and accommodating. I highly recommend talking to other interviewees. It really helped me calm down and plus there's a good chance they might be your future classmates. Good luck.

I'm sure this has already been discussed, but I am too lazy to look it up....To everyone that has interviewed already...they asked us about having used email, etc...and then something about a PDA and a laptop....I could swear there was one other thing and it seemed like it was somewhere between a laptop and a PDA...anyone remember what I am talking about or what it is called?

Thanks!

Yeah - they mentioned a tablet PC. But from what I recall, it won't be required until 2006 (I think)!

That's it!!!
But what the heck is a tablet PC????

Do they make the students buy these? Those suckers look pricey!

Hey Khenon - see above posts - right now they are considering making them mandatory starting in 2006. 👍

Just got done with my interview yesterday

everybody was right, very relaxed

Thanks to SDN, there were no surprising questions

I got asked about the ethical blood transfusion and so did several others
some others were asked the three people in history to have dinner question as well. The other interviewees were very nice and we all got along.

Notes Service sounds like a great system. One of the 1st years said only about 30-40% of students actually attend lecture. This is surprising to me

425-450 interviews and they send out acceptances to 190 for a class of 175.

So to everybody that has an interview, you got about a 45% chance of getting in.

Hey Datko! I'm glad that it went well. Looks like you'll be hearing something before Christmas. I hope that its good news!

Congrats on your good interview........i've also noticed that many people are surprised that 100% of the class doesn't go to every lecture, so I'd thought I'd comment about that. I'm always afraid that prospective students will get the impression that the quality of our lecturers SUCK, and thats really not the case. Infact, I'd say we have some damn good lecturers (and well, some that need improvement as well  ). Many people just find that 4 hours of on your own study time is sometimes more high yield than attending 4 hours of lectures that spit an ****load of information at you. Just think what would happen if lecture was required and attendance was 100%........YIKES :scared:

Did I hear tablet pc? I haven't been here for awhile, but did I hear tablet pc? I shadowed a doc with one of those over the summer. They had all of the patient files and everything integrated into one system.

Is it wrong that I salivate when I hear about good computers?

Congrats Eva and Charlie, may your lives be easier now...for awhile.

JMuhnie--yes, tablet pc!! i totally wish i would have gotten one at the beginning of this year, especially since they have wireless set up now. i'd much rather surf SDN than pay attention during lecture.

speaking of lecture, i'm one of those people who feels like they will miss something important by not attending, so i'm pretty much at every lecture. however, for most of the classes you can get by just fine by reading noteservice and studying at home. once you've attending a few lectures you'll be able to quickly figure out which ones are worth going to.

anyways, congrats again to everyone who has gotten in. and good luck to everyone who still has interviews.

I've always wanted a tablet lilmo......<hint> <hint> x-mas gift for yours truly. Or, maybe you can just get me a supply of adderall laced water ugggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh

edit: by the way, lilmo is one of those lucky people who goes to lecture and practically knows everything by the time she walks out. notice she's calm as hell right now while I'm freaking out 😱 😱 😱

Ive been listening to a lot of praise about the Tablet PC and I thought I would put my $.02.

Tablet PC's are great, I was walking through best buy and got hooked on one, I was drawing and coloring for 30 minutes before I realized what I was doing. The downside is they are still in the expensive/overpriced stage. You get a really cool feature at the expense of a good computer. Slow processor small hard drive small RAM. If accepted, I plan to have a wireless laptop and a paper notebook to write on, sometimes I type faster anyway and I can always read what I type.

I do have an IPAQ that I can write on the screen to take notes but it is a lot easier to just write it down on paper and then maybe scan it in later.

just my thoughts,

I guess I meant are the students responsible for buying them, or are they provided by the school (ie school property)? Or did I miss that above, too! 🙂 That seems like alot of money to expect each student to buy one, but I guess some schools will include that in your financial aid. I don't even have an interview so what am I worried about!

If they make the computers mandatory, the cost will be figured into financial aid whenever the requirements change (instead of the 1 time exception you can get for a computer now). This change would also mean you wouldn't have to shell out for the computer w/your own cash and then be reimbursed for it. Instead funds would be dissiminated soley for the use of buying the tablet pc.

Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks for the info. Again . . . I have no interview, so I'm not sure why I'm worried about this, but here's hopin' it'll be my problem soon! 😀

So with tablet PC's, you can only 'write' on them? Is there an additional feature that lets you type? I guess I'm confused as to why a tablet PC would be better than a laptop. Any thoughts?

They are "convertibles" in that you can either write directly on the screen or swing the top around and type on it like a normal notebook.

So you can, for example, use the computer in tablet mode during a powerpoint lectures. You download and open the powerpoint and can then hand write notes or figures directly onto the slides. (or browse the interent, depending on your level of interest in the lectures  )

Or you can swing the screen around and use it like a traditional notebook for writing a paper or dictating notes (since most people type faster than they write).

AND the cool factor is off the charts 😎

They do sound very cool! Do you think that you'll get one, even if it doesn't end up being required? I'm considering it.

yeah man, those things are pretty damn sweet, and the handwriting elements are AMAZING. Still, as noted in previous posts, they're pretty damn expensive, so I probably won't end up getting one. THat is, unless evajaclynn becomes my sugar momma and hooks it up w/ the dope christmas gift......unfortunately, something tells me that she's already got another M1 bum that she's currently supporting 😀

I personally think I'll get either a laptop or tablet. In response to the comment on how pricey tablet pcs are right now...give them the six months between now and when you'll need to actually buy one. The prices in computers change quite rapidly over time. By then it will probably mean the difference of a couple hundred dollars for the same computer, and there will probably be a new model out with more hard drive, ram, processing speed, etc...as previously stated though...tablet pcs have a cool factor. I think that is why I'll get one...if you could see my desktop computer you'd probably understand why...it is a monster of a computer built for gaming and stuff, but looks cool because I put it in a shiney blue case.

On a different note...anyone here go to KU basketball games? Do current med students have time?

Yea I do think I"ll get one even if they're not required. I've gotten into the habit of taking my notebook to class, so the main thing I want is a light notebook (my current computer is definately not light, to the point where my back hurts at the end of the day from lugging it around). The toshiba notebook is like 4.2lbs, which is about half of my current computer.

On top of that, I'd imagine the lectures next year are powerpoint intensive (felipe5 or lilmo, can you confirm or deny?) and it sounds so useful to be able to write notes or draw figures right on the slides w/o wasting a ton of paper.

yeah dogg, most of our lectures are powerpoint intense (anatomy and CTB like a motha), so it would definitely be nice for those classes. Oh, and people definitely go to KU games, depending on how close they are to test blocks. You'd be surprised how much free time we have 😀 and maybe even more surprised at how some of us waste that time (naps, naps, alcoholism, and naps) hahahahaha

Felipe: I am sorry, but I will not be able to be your sugar momma next year. Unless, of course, you watch my puppy for me while I am off touring the world. 🙂

Jmunhie: They held a little drawing a few weeks ago where any current med students could show up at 7:30am and get a free pair of tickets to one game (they had tickets for lots of games, but when your name came out of the drawing, you got to pick from the ones still available). I don't know if the students get together and go a lot, but I'd be down for going next year (if there's ever time). Gotta love KU Basketball. LOVE IT!
🙂

To all: Thanks for all of your advice on the tablet PC. I want to be 'cool' too, so I'll probably throw down the money to purchase one. I need something new anyways, b/c my current computer is HUGE. 😎

Looks like this website offers comparisons between different models, etc.:

I really should be working - look what SDN does to me - I'm going to get fired! 😳

Eva-

I should also be working, well currently im getting paid so maybe I can consider this working.

Im a school nurse for 700 adults that work in a warehouse, i take care of their booboos and send them for treatment if they need it.

I've done most of my med application while here at work, it gets slow sometimes.

edit: Maybe your little puppy would like to visit my ferocious tiger of a housecat named Chloe (see avatar, it was a yawn and not a growl)

Perhaps an animal party is in order?

Yeah, I am also at work and getting paid, but at times, I don't know if I am the best worker! That's what its like when you're one of 6 people in your office. And currently 3 of my coworkers are out of town on business. My boss is in Singapore for 3 weeks!

i've already told my parents that i want one of those microsoft convertible tablets for x-mas. even after i informed them of the price, my parents were willing to listen (they're still giddy about my acceptance, which apparently came at the exact right time). they kept asking me, "so do you really need this for med school?" my response: "absolutely!"

and as for the ku basketball team--i went to the game vs. nevada last monday, and we looked SHARP. three freshman in particular (cj giles, russell robinson, and sasha kaun) looked extremely ready to contribute. and since wake forest got drubbed by illinois this week, we have a good chance of becoming #1 in both polls. this is our year, baby... 👍

I'm camping out today for the next game. Buddy Hawks is my group's name. It would be so nice if I had a tablet/laptop for camping. I guess they have wireless installed in Allen fieldhouse now? Anyway, I think it might be the only way I get some studying done for immunology. Instead of having wireless capability...I have printed out notes probability...at least I get it printed for free (minus my own paper). 🙂

thanks for the comparison site eva...you've made me start drooling at the possibilities...If I can just hold off for 6-7 more months

I've got a few lil' trips comin' up. I'll be headed to the Philippines at the end of January for a short medical mission. Then I am going on this HUGE family trip to Europe next summer for 2 weeks. So I was thinking of staying longer on my own, but haven't decided yet. And I have this friend in Paraguay (she's there for 2 years with the Peace Corps) that I would love to go visit. So I'm not really sure yet what I'm going to do. Not that I have a TON of money, but I really want to enjoy myself while I still can. 👍

But I'm not quitting my job until at least June - so no huge trips till after that. Unless I can work around my job!

What are your plans?!

Anyone know where you can find KU's match list for previous years?

I'm interested to see where students typically end up (I know that there are a majority that go into Family Practice, but wanted to see how the rest turned out)!

I dont have any real plans yet. I just know I want to backpack Europe. Unfortunately, none of my friends can go. So I am looking for anyone interested!

felipe- and here i was hoping you were buying me a tablet for christmas........

everyone else- just to clarify why i am calm during this stressful time at the end of the semester. it is not because i "know all the material", though it sure would be nice if i did. it is because i do not have the hope of getting a Sup no matter how hard i study, so i have decided to relax. as for felipe, he knows this stuff 1000x better than i do, he's just being modest. he's such a gun-gun 😀 😀 😀

Datko: Thanks for the info...unfortunately I didn't get it until after my interview. They asked me most of the same questions...but I was expecting them.

All: Thanks for the info on the interviews, I think they went well, I guess we'll find out in about a month. About the tablet PC's, my roommate has the nicest one Toshiba offers. While getting ready for our last exam he printed out all of his notes...I stacked his notes next to mine....the stack was about the same size, however mine cost $1.69 and his cost >$3000. If you can't tell my opinion is a little biased. Another important point to consider is the durability of the tablet. The tablets that are made by less reputable brands have a tendency for the screen hinges to wear out quickly. Also, after getting my PDA last year I know how fast the novelty factor wears off.

Good point on the tablets. However, despite all the cons, being able to check your e-mail and surf SDN during class is much cooler than doodling stick figures or playing tic-tac-toe with the person sitting next to you (no offense to the super cool people i sit next too in class who just might be reading this thread).
