Anyone Heard From Mercer???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was on the alternate list at Mercer and received an acceptance letter yesterday.

On another note, I figured out how you can find out your relative status on the alternate list: request to schedule an appointment with Putnam to find out what you can do to improve your application. If schedules an appointment, that mean your at the bottom of the list, and you might not get in. If she tell you to hold off on the appointment, that means your at the top of the list and scheduling an appointment would be a waste of time because you will be accepted anyway. When I asked, she told me to keep an eye on my mailbox. Take this for what its worth.

Peace out.

Did you receive your letter with the first batch?

I just called and the only thing the office told me was that I was in the range that they accepted last year. She said that 25 people received an acceptance last year.

I received my letter in the first batch.

I think so. I got my waitlist notification on April 6.

My question is simply so did mercer call and tell you that you were taken off the wait list or did they just send you a letter.

sorry for two post but are you accepting the place at mercer

Since I didn't get in anywhere else, yes. However, I did take the MCAT over again, because I thought that I would have to reapply. If I get a really good score, I tempted to reapply to MCG because the cost at Mercer is scaring me. Plus, I did want to take some time off and work. But the otherside of me says, "Dude, you got into a great school. People struggle to get in, and you're going to turn down a spot? That's crazy talk." And reapplying would be a b*@#$. Please feel free to post some words of wisdom, anyone.

As for your other question: I got a certified letter in the mail yesterday. I had to sign for it.

I just spoke with Mrs. Putnam. She confirmed that 25 people got off the list last year. In the e-mail I sent her, I suggested that my place on the list was in the 35-70 range since I got a letter with the second batch. She told me she couldn't legally tell me what my exact place was but that my assumption was correct. So that basically confirms that if you got a letter in the second batch of letters (which would've been around April 20-24) you're in the 35-70 range.

So, I hate to be a disappointment to all those with me in the 35-70 range, but it doesn't look good for us based on past years. But continued good luck to everyone else! I hope it works out.

Congratulations on getting accepted! And I have to agree with your thoughts, applying next year would be crazy! So many of us are dying to get off a waitlist and although I can understand the hesitance about the cost involved with Mercer remember that there are financial options such as the Georgia State Medical Board scholarships that will cover a good chunk of the cost if you agree to stay in Georgia for a few years. You may be eligible for other grants/scholarships as time goes on. Bottom line is, most people starting medical school will owe money when they finish, you just have to accept that fact even though we've been conditioned to not want to go into debt. This is a GOOD debt. I have to say that if I had to choose between going through this process again not being certain of the outcome at MCG or even at Mercer next year I would take the opportunity you've been given now and run with it.

I guess there are good and bad things about both. Obviously, any of us would kill for an acceptance. The expenses at Mercer are certainly significant, but we'll all have debt (to varying degress) when we're done. It just depends on what is feasible for you. On the other hand, you really have to make sure you're ready. If you really wanted to work some first to earn money or don't feel like you're quite ready yet or that you need more time, perhaps reapplying (although it would seriously suck) would be beneficial for you.

I know many people have said that 25 people got off the waitlist last year. My question is how many of those 25 people do you think come off around this may 15 mark.

No idea. I wonder how many more people will get in this year since MCG has added 10 spots to their class. Do you think it will be increased by 2-3 or more or less?

I keep waiting for your acceptance post. I'm expecting it any day. Good luck to you and let us all know when it comes.

Thanks and I really hope so. I am living, breathing, eating and dying going to Mercer next year. The more I think about it the more I want to be there.

I GOT IN!!! Mary Putnam just emailed me to tell me that I got in off the waitlist and that my official registered letter is on its way!!! I can barely breathe right now!

That's so rediculous. You'll get in somewhere and then you can make a show of giving your alumni support money to wherever you go instead of Mercer!

and thing is im in the dual admissions bme program and he told me not to apply next year.

I was in that dual admissions program too...but I made one point too low when I took the MCAT the first time so I didn't get in through that program. But that is rediculous. It has to be some kind of legal matter for them to advertise one thing in the Mercer bulletin and then not follow through.

In fact, the program was first advertised the year I started. It was THE selling point that made me choose BME at Mercer. Yet, when me and another student (who did get in last year) asked the department chair of the BME department what the deal was, he acted like he had never heard of the program. A couple girls in my class threatened to sue so he threw something together, but we all knew it was bogus. One student I knew of came to person because of the program from out of state. He was screwed before he even applied and they never bothered to tell him. That's unethical, immoral, and probably illegal. As you can see, I have a lot of feeling about it, and if my first MCAT had been one point higher and they had told me what they told you, I'd be letting them hear from my lawyer.

does anyone want to talk to mrs. putnam and ask her what number they have reached down to so far.

I'd do it if I hadn't already bugged that poor lady to death. I've asked her every subtle way I can find, and all she'll do is give me subtle responses. They must have gone pretty far already. We'll see what happens.

There will be more movement. I don't think you'll even see the majority of the movement until after May 15. Mrs. Putnam told me (first hand account) that May AND June would be the busiest months for movement. Last year, 25 people got off in TOTAL. That was out of 70. But keep in mind, that there will be those who reject their spot on the wait list and if they are higher up than you, your name gets bumped up. Also, some will get accepted off the wait list at Mercer and then get accepted off another one and go to the other school. This could take quite a while. There are lots of contengencies. Don't loose hope yet. Were you in the first or second batch of letters?

thanks for the encouragement man i was in the first batch dated april 6th.

Man, I don't want to give you false hope, but if I was you I'd just sit back and relax. I'm guessing if they evenly split the batch then you are in the top 35. Based on last year, 25 will get in off the list and those offers will go to you guys first. Even if you are in the 25 - 35 range I'd say 10 people will go somewhere else, reject their spot on the list, etc. etc.

Just let us know when you get in, cause I can't expect anything until all you guys from the first batch get an offer!

but the big question is how do we know that 25 will get in this year. Can you really go on what happened last year. It would be interesting to see if this 25 number has held up in previous years. I guess this is just me being crazy.

Yeah, you're right...it assumes 25. But I think Mercer tries to pick their wait list based on statistics from years past. If they choose 70 for their list, 25 getting off is pretty reasonable. Hopefully this year a lot of other schools will be generous and a lot of us will get in off the list!

Hey bracehead,

Did she give you a general indication of where you are on the list? When I called she told me that I was in the top 25 and that I should keep waiting. I asked her if I should start preparing my application for next year, and she just said to hold off on that for a little while longer. I really want to get in but I do not want to hurt my chances by reapplying late for next year.

atl203,

putnam told me the exact same thing when i asked her about reapplying, and i got an acceptance letter a couple of days later. so, i think you can expect your acceptance letter any day now. if she says hold off, that means you're in.

thanks data-ram. i really hope it works out.

Actually I think assuming 25 getting in this year is safe considering the fact that MCG has added 10 spots to their classes. Many of us who applied to Mercer also applied to MCG and I know that many people want to go to MCG due to its lower costs/etc (not a bad thing really). Well if any of those people who wind up occupying one of those 10 additional seats at MCG this year were also holding a seat at Mercer then Mercer will be able to pass their seat on to someone else on the waitlist. Of course 10 new seats at MCG only equates to something like 5% which means about 1 additional person, but it makes sense that at least some effect should be felt on Mercer's waitlist as a result of this.

i was told the same thing as you atl23.

bracehead said:

Ok, so bracehead and atl203, you were both in the first group of letters. That means I have to wait until both of you get your before I can even hope for anything! Yall had better post as soon as you get in! Good luck!

Listen even if only 25-27 people actually get in off the waitlist there are bound to be people who turn down their position on the waitlist when they are first waitlisted, or people who are accepted elsewhere and abandon their place on Mercer's waitlist or even get in to Mercer off the waitlist then get in elsewhere and opt to go there. Don't lose hope if this is where you really want to be.

this is a little off topic. does anyone know if mercer requires a drug test before matriculation or later on otherwise? i remember dr. camous saying something about it, but i though he was just trying to scare us. did any student ever mention drug testing?

haha a little worried? I thought I heard something about a drug test but I cannot remember if that was for class or for clinical stuff.

So has anyone called Ms. Putnam to get an update on the waitlist. Any infor that you may be willing to share will be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, somebody needs to call and get the latest. Its nearly June and neither you or atl203 has gotten "The Call". I can't even entertain a hope until yall hear something. Not that I expect anything, but I am pulling for you two! Good luck!

thanks man. I am starting to get a little worried because it is getting to be almost june. Really after the first part of june the movement on waitlist slows down dramtically.
