I got an C-/B+ in General Chemistry but a solid A in both semesters in OChem. For some reason, OChem was a lot easier to understand conceptually to grasp and retain. How will this be looked upon by medical schools come application time? I also had a plethora of personal issues going on while I was taking GChem which I won't delve into, but frankly my GChem grades do seem somewhat poor given other competitive applicants.

I did better in both semesters than organic than I did in both semesters of general chemistry. I haven't applied yet, so I'm not sure how medical schools will perceive this. I think as long as your general chemistry grades are the exception rather than the rule of your application, you'll be fine. Doing better in organic can't hurt.

Lots of people tout the "show progress" idea as you move throughout college. For some, starting college can be a big hurdle, so I don't think doing poorly in freshman year classes and improving in later classes, even if they get harder is such a bad thing. As long as your overall GPA is good, you should be fine, and if asked about a C, explain why you got that grade.

I received A's in both, though I found the A easier to attain in Orgo. I'm more visual and less mathematical, which probably explains this. Just keep your other grades nice and high, and you should be OK.

GenChem: C+/B+
OChem: A-/B+

I think you may have to retake that C-...

Gen Chem, A/A-
Organic A/A
Tho a did get a B+ in organic 2 Lab, but that was because my TA gave everyone a 97 and the class was on a curve. I was later told by the lab coordinator that he picked our grades out of a hat. Oh well, it was a one credit class

A/A organic
B+/B gen chem, but wasn't very serious fman yr

Gen chem 2 was the worst for me. I sailed through gen chem 1 and both o chems, but HATED gen chem 2. It could be that my professional would just read us his lecture notes like they were a very VERY dry novel. On the last day of class the professor picked up a piece of chalk to answer a student's question and the whole class literally burst out in a round of applause. It was the only time he ever wrote anything on the board.

I'm definitely much more visual as well, and I found organic chemistry to be easier. This is a correlation I see a lot around SDN.

B-/B in gen chem
A-/A- in orgo

Simply I adapted, studied better and (as corny as it sounds) started believing in myself. Also instead of judging myself after a bad quiz or so (saying "how did you get that wrong," etc), I would find out what I did wrong and fix it. I stopped condemning myself and shrugged my shoulders and said I'll get it right on the exam. Also going to the gym more often

I'm glad to hear a lot of people found orgo more doable than gen chem, I am taking gen chem II next semester but I honestly can't wait to take orgo so I can start studying for the MCAT 🙂

Got As across the board. Eh.

CC bro?

Got B/B+ in Gen Chem
A/A in Orgo.

For me organic was way easier than general chemistry primarily because general chemistry required quite a bit of ridiculous mental math like calculate the log(5.5) for a 20 question exam where you have 50 minutes total.

Gen chem is on the MCAT too. Get studying.

A/A in Gen Chem I&II, took both in one continuous summer semmester.
A/A in Organic Chem I&II, you mad bros?

I got a 98 in GCHEM, but only a 97 in OCHEM.

It's obviously harder.

Anyone who thinks Ochem is easier than gen chem probably had an easy teacher for Organic.

I did A/A in ochem and only A/B in gen chem, but because I crammed, not because it was harder.

I wouldn't say so. Organic chemistry really has a different mindset than general chemistry, with general chemistry you 'typically' looking at math heavy work while in Orgo understanding core concepts makes solving synthesis or predict a product questions more of a puzzle than pure memorization (and no math yay!)

Gen Chem 1 3.0
Gen Chem 2 3.5
Orgo 1 3.5
Orgo 2 4.0
I just finished Orgo this week, taking it over the summer was a large time commitment but was not really the suicidal GPA destroyer everyone made it out to be.

I did and I can say without a doubt it was because of the professor.
