Anyone here going to UPitt and doing pre-med there?

If so, how is it?? Does it give a great education?

I went to Pitt. Granted, that was...geez, a decade ago.

I thought that the education at Pitt was great. The professors were wonderful, and I really respected and admired them.

Keep in mind that there is no "pre-medicine" major at Pitt. At least, there wasn't when I went there. In a lot of ways, this was great for me because it allowed me to branch out and learn a lot of other things. But a lot of the really focused pre-med kids complained.

Also graduated from Pitt but graduated this past May. Pitt is great for considering/pursuing medicine. I originally chose it because I had a full tuition scholarship and you can't beat that but it turned out to be a great decision. I got involved in research second semester freshman year and my advisor there hooked me up with fellowships, doctors to shadow, etc etc. Senior year I took a pathology class with a professor at the med achool and did a fellowship doing autopsies this past summer. Being so close to all the research labs around and upmc is fantastic. It's soooo easy to get clinical experience, research experience, volunteer experience, etc. And on the education side, its certainly not an easy school. I know I'm biased but Pitt is great choice for exposure to the medical field.

I am currently a senior at Pitt, and while I don't have any other college education to compare it to, I'd say I've gotten an excellent education and great guidance on the pre-med track. Like the previous posters said, there's no "pre-med" major at Pitt, but rather a general set of required/recommended classes to take if you are preparing for a career in medicine or another professional health field. This way you can major in absolutely whatever you want, as long as you make sure you work in those courses (they are all required/recommended courses at MD schools). The pre-health advisor here is amazing, and even though there are a lot of pre-meds here, if you take the time to get to know her and meet with her often, she will be a great resource for you when you start applying.

You really can't beat having 2 hospitals on campus, 1 down the street, and several more a short bus ride away. Volunteer and research opportunities are endless. The medical school is right on campus, too, and through my participation with a pre-health organization on campus, I have become very familiar with the school and many students there.

Overall, I LOVE Pitt and Pittsburgh as a whole, and I don't regret coming here in any way. 😍
