HI,

im prepping for step1 right now,

i have been using prozac(prescribed by my doc) for sometime now, and have been trying to discontinue its use, or use it at a very low dosage (5mg), since i think its been affecting with my thinking process.
But this kinda gets me back into mild depression which makes me lose interest in everything including studying.

Does anybody here have a friends or know someone who uses SSRI's regularly and are incredibly smart/scored awesome in Steps?

i know pharmacologically Prozac shouldnt interfere with memory or thinking, and probably ii am just paranoid, and i thought if someone here knew a SSRI using genius, it would probably reduce my paranoia.

I apologize to the admins and everyone if this is a wrong place to post.
I did talk to my shrink and he said SSRI's are fine.

I just want to do my best for the steps.

Anyone?
Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is a good time to change your meds but have you visited with your doctor? Effexor could be a better option.

i wish i could help. but i dont know anyone who has told me they take antidepressants.

hang in there. you will be fine.

Talk it out with your doctor and see what he thinks but regardless, don't make major changes. And get it out of your head that it's affecting your thinking process even if it is. It'll only make it worse

Given that it has a long half life (mainly the active metabolite), it'll be hanging out in your body for a good chunk of your study period even if you stop right now. Speak to your provider about this, but my general advice to friends has been to stick to whatever CNS meds they're on if stable and not rock the boat while studying for Step 1.

even if SSRI's make you stupid, it shouldn't affect taking tests. it's more about motivation to study.

I don't want to encourage you to blame the medication but...six months back I had taken something (won't get into what it was) but I did not expect any side effects.

I didn't realize at first but my brain was getting crazy fuzzy every time I'd start to study. Like brain wouldn't even focus on words...I think I read the word ventricle and was like..."ventricle...ventricle...my god chick, VENTRICLE!" when we'd been studying cvs for weeks but information wouldn't get into my head. At first I thought - am I so burned out that my brain refuses to cooperate? Panic! Finally I put two and two together when I noticed my excess sleep for 3 days and fortunately within a few days the side effects wore off anyhow.

But this anecdote sucks as it wasn't an SSRI. 😛

I really appreciate your help and input guys.

Thanks a lot.

I guess like hobocommander pointed out 'motivation' should be the only factor getting affected i hope, and if i can try and push it somehow, i guess i can get through this- ssri or not.

thanks for the replys.
