The confirmation email didn't provide much information.
1. Do you walk from the hotel to the hospital the night before and the interview day? Or do they pick you up?
2. How casual is the night before thing? Do they feed you?
3. About what time does the interview day end?
Thanks.
great interview, even if the structure seems unusual at first.
1. Walking distance 5-10 minutes. I walked the night before, drove in the morning because it was cold/raining, and they validate parking. Took longer to drive and park than it did to walk. Hotel is a nice place - old unique building renovated with sweet rooms, flat screen tvs, internet, etc.
2. Very casual. I think I wore khakis and a sweater, but would have been more comfortable in jeans. Both of the chief residents were in jeans - very informal. They had some finger food and sandwiches, cookies, etc. Enough to make a decent meal. Lasted around 2 hours to meet and greet, have an overview of the program, and tour of the hospital. Again - informal, friendly, laidback. Don't stress, but definitely don't skip it. This is where you learn a bulk about the program.
3. End of the day is variable in a sense. I think I had 5 or 6 interviews of 20 minutes each. Sounds worse than it is, and the interviewers (for the most part) were pleasant. Preceded by a brief introduction by the chair and the PD. After the interviews a good number of residents showed up to take us out to lunch (they do provide transportation, but you can choose to drive yourself and help out also). This lunch was well attended by the residents, and was at a very nice sushi/steakhouse. Interview suits did not look too far out of place there. Varied menu and everything tasted great. I got the impression that the lunch, while not a formal interview, was used by the residents to get a better feel for the applicants, and might have been used in evaluations (I think I remember a chief telling me this - someone correct me if I am wrong). We all had a good time there and finished up around 3-3:30, but I could have stayed longer.
