Here’s the real question—how many of those are reps? 😂
I still have my coros pace 2 maybe 10 years old that I did easily 10k with during residency fellowship. Amazing watch and battery life.Coros Apex Pro.
Great exercise/running watch with 3 weeks of battery life per charge. I got it when I was trail running a lot and doing an ultra marathon. Very customizable faces. Lots of useful tracking stats. Does the job well enough for my liking.
Just picked one up on my trip to Japan. You can get quite the discount if you buy from a department store as they have a 5% foreigner discount plus the duty free. Saved me $1500… but of course it’s only saving if you were going to go to Japan anyway.Maybe someday I'll update to a Grand Seiko.

Grand seikos are beautiful. You’re not gonna impress anyone else but watch nerds but the movement and dials are quite a thing to see in person

A colleague and I argued about watches once and his take was that he WANTED his anesthesiologist/surgeon to be rocking an expensive watch because he expected them to be successful. He grew up in a fancy area, so I guess it depends where you work and who your clientele is. Everywhere I’ve worked you’d be more likely to make people uncomfortable with a nice watch, big diamond engagement ring, etc.Years ago, I wore a Panerai on OB once and a patient's husband recognized the model and couldn't stop talking about it. The conversation then devolved into an uncomfortable discussion about doctor's salaries and malpractice premiums. I decided then and there to stop wearing expensive watches going forward.

Spring drive! I’ve never been a watch guy but really enjoy wearing this one. Was also fun to go to the seiko showroom in Ginza and then hit up the seiko museum in Tokyo. Gives more of an experience to a purchase seeing the history of the watchmaker. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Tokyo if you’re in the market for a high end souvenir.Nice. Congrats. It’s a good luxury starter watch.I have been browsing higher end watches.. new to the game and no experience. Really drawn to some of the breitling watches. What is the consensus on their brand?

performance cars are all subjective as well. And have wide range of cost. Why are you paying 100k more for X sports car over X sports carAgreed. At least a Porsche handles better, is faster, and a more engaging drive than a Camry. There are some objective measures where a luxury vehicle is a better performer than an economy vehicle. However, a watch is purely a status symbol piece of jewelry that performs worse in every objective measure when compared to cheaper options. A Casio F91w is $15.87 on Amazon and will last decades with just battery changes.
This is 100% right. I have a "nice" watch that requires more service than all the cheap watches I've owned, combined. For that matter, I have a "nice" car that requires more service than any of the japanese cars I've owned. And yet... I just don't see myself going back to a practical car. I don't think, in the case of the car, it's branding as much is it just being an F-ing rip to drive and gorgeous to look at.A real man wears a yellow gold rainbow Daytona to work…
Watches are an interesting case study into the power of marketing, manufactured scarcity, and hype creation. A watch that probably has an intrinsic value of <$100 being sold for $30,000-500,000 is a fascinating look into human behavior. In the 1970s, the Japanese produced the first quartz watches and almost put the Swiss watch industry out of business completely. The Swiss reinvented themselves as luxury and status symbols instead of as time-measuring tools. It’s different than cars because one could argue that a Porsche is better at many aspects of driving when compared to a Toyota Camry. A mechanical watch, like a Rolex, is worse in every aspect of its stated function at measuring time when compared to a $30 quartz watch. Now, there are some aspects of watchmaking that require artistry and craftsmanship, but a Rolex is a mass-produced, largely machine-made piece of jewelry. A mechanical watch will always be imprecise and inaccurate compared to a quartz watch. The Japanese continue to master precision with quartz as demonstrated by Citizen creating a movement that is within 1 second of accuracy per year when measured against an atomic clock. These high end quartz movements are still a fraction of the price of luxury and high end mechanical watches.
But yeah, my yellow gold rainbow Daytona is subtle and durable, and a quiet reminder of how sweet I am compared to the poors.
I’m a fan of practical too. The problem in our area they’re steal all the parts off practical cars (happens everywhere sure). Cant have a Toyota or Honda around here. I have paid the Henri Stern Watch Agency enough money to buy several Seiko watches over the years to keep my 2 Pateks running well. I used to collect watches but all of the maintenance took a lof the fun out of it. I only kept 2 Pateks and an Audemars and sold the rest. I had a perpetual calendar Audemars but maintenance was out of sight and it was the first to go. The appreciation on the Pateks has more than compensated for the maintenance costs. This is 100% right.
