Hi, just wondering if anyone going to interview at KCOM in mid-June? I got a call from them saying they are open another round of interview in mid-June and I am invited. Any advice or suggestion from KCOM student? Thanks. ^_^

Just relax.

The interview day here is a very laid-back affair in an attempt of giving you the student the opportunity to 'size' up the school just as the interviewers are sizing you up.

The interviews are really laid back and non-confrontational and the student ambassadors want to answer any questions that you might have regarding KCOM.

If you have specific questions don't hesitate to contact me.

There was a group of 11 students and I know 3 got accepted the week after interview. I actually got accepted the day before orientation started. So there is definately a chance you will get in too. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Couple quick questions: 1. How long is the drive from Kansas city to kirksville? Yahoo map says it will take 5 hours for 178 miles of drive and it's hard to believe. 2. How do you like your study in KCOM? I heard many good things about the school but not sure if I will fit in. Thanks. ^_^

I too got the call this last week and will be interviewing on June 10th. This is rather humerous since I am already carrying around an acceptance in my pocket and two waitlists. <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> I would really appreciate hearing the selling points on KCOM. How does it stand up to WesternU? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is about 2.5-3 hours depending on how quickly and what route you take to get to Kirksville from K.C.

The studies here intense, but, no matter where you attend medical school they will be intense.

Dr. Clink,

I'll try to give you some selling points once my finals/boards are completed if another student here doesn't beat me to it.

What I can mention without reservation is that I feel my education and experiences at KCOM have been incredibly good and I have no problems recommending to anyone that this be a top choice for their medical education. Knowing what I know now about KCOM I would still choose to attend this school, I have no regrets about choosing to attend KCOM.

Funny, I just drove from KC to Kville today! It depends on where in KC you are driving from. If you are flying in, you can make it in 3 hours give or take. "give or take" depends on how many stops you make, road construction (alot of that in the summer!), etc. From other parts of KC, it will take longer. To go to KC yesteray, I took hwy 6 and caught I-35 at Cameron. I had to go that way because a bridge was flooded on 36. However, I came back on 36 today and it was a lot better/safer drive. They have 36 4-laned almost the entire way from Cameron to Macon. At macon, you turn north for 30 miles. That's the way I would advise you to go.

As far as studying at KCOM...it's been a trip. Medical school is something you will NOT be prepared for, no matter how many people you talk to. However, KCOM seemed understand that and provide several resources that helped deal with it. I can only speak for KCOM, not having had attended other medical schools...and I think KCOM is one of the more 'friendly' schools, as far as family(from what others say via interviews, past experiences, etc).

Don't worry about fitting in. We have a variety of students here, each offering something unique and new to the class. You will be fine, as long as you aren't one of those overly competitive people. KCOM isn't like that at all. We all help eachother out and those that are 'selfish' with information really stick out.

Good luck and have a safe trip.

I am also interviewing in mid June. Hopefully I can get in. I am currently on two waitlists and still have interviews remaining at UHS and KCOM. If all goes well there won't be a next year as far as applying but if I do have to reapply I'll be quicker with my secondaries! A hard lesson to learn.

OUSooner,

We can always use more Sooner fans here! The Associate Dean for Regional Affairs, Dr. Robbins, is a HUGE Sooners fan from Sallisaw, so be sure to look him up while you are here. Also, Dr. Yates, one of the best-known OMM gurus in the world, is from Oklahoma, as am I. I know for sure we have one Oklahoman (who is also a Sooners fan--who isn't??) in the Class of 2006 (SDN screen name Patch Medic). You'll be strengthening the numbers!!

Good luck!! If you like, look me up while you are here and I will be glad to visit with you and show you around on your free time (if you schedule any). Ask the admissions office to find me for you (Nicole McGovern knows my screen name)!

Thanks again. KCOM has always on top of my med school list although I am holding my seat in another school. If I get in, I will definately give up my 1000 bucks and go to KCOM. :)
double elle : Thanks for your reply. I will take your suggestion to get there.

Another question: I was wondering if it will be difficult to find a place to live in kirksville by the mid-July? There are some recommendation I read on this board says that one should find apartment ASAP....

I have the same question: Is it that difficult to find a place to live if I get in really late? Ofcourse I'm willing to live out of a tent or under a bridge if I get in so I'm sure I won't be too disappointed!

NOOOOOOO!!!!! Finding a place to live will be easy. There are an estimated 30% of rentals vacant!!! When you are here, pick up a Kville newspaper and you'll see the 'for rent' section is very long!!! And it's not all crap-housing either. There have been new apartments go up in the past few years, which leaves small houses and apartments around town vacant. Let this be the least of your worries!

double elle: do you mind describe a little about your first year in KCOM? What did you like the most and what you did not like? What was the size of your class? Thanks a lot for answering the questions. :)

Go OUSooner! Pre-season #1... I hope you get in so we can talk sports...I'm moving in on the 2nd of June, let the u-haul caravan begin!!Enjoy your summer!

Hello, I'm currently living in Chicago and recently scheduled an interview for mid-June at KCOM. Anybody know how long it takes to get to Kirksville from here? What's Kirksville like? People, town, activities? Any tips for successful interviewing? Thanks for any help!!
:)

I find KCOM website quite helpful on those info you are interesting in. Maybe you want to give it a try? :)

BUMP, only a week left. anyone w/ some last min. info. i've checked out the website and know my osteopathic history well. also have gone over my own application and can explain my weaknesses. anything particular about the KCOM interview? thx

For those of you interviewing this coming week in June I can only tell you to relax. The day is long, however, KCOM has gone to great lengths to make it as low stress as possible.

For instance, instead of giving you your tours etc. before you interview, all interviews are scheduled so they are done before lunch. You will have (I think) two faculty interviews and one with an admissions counselor, again, these'll be done by lunch. After lunch you will get an OTM demonstration, assuming there are enough student ambassadors in town (2nd years are on break next week) followed by a Q&A on Financial Aid, a tour of our Recreation facilities, and a campus tour.

Interviews are fairly relaxed, and they are designed to be nonconfrontational so you can learn as much about KCOM as KCOM does about you. No one is out to 'get you' or trick you into anything during the interviews. Both of mine were very low key, just regular conversations, however, each interviewer has their own style. When given the opportunity to ask questions, esp. from students ask away. Most of us like helping others and look forward to interview day as much you do (its refreshing to see people excited about med school).

Last minute advice, get a good nights rest, be on time, and be who you are. Oh, being polite is also a good thing (remember please and thank you).

well i'm taking off tomorrow morning for missouri. i think its about an 8 hr drive from okc. so i'll get there late and check out everything at night. i'll try to get a hold of u john DO by asking nicole. anyways if there's any last second advice i'd appreciate it. just gonna review some stuff tonight(breaking ofcourse for the tyson-lewis fight) and tomorrow, hopefully i'll save my best interview for last.

OUsooner:
Have a safe drive. I will see you on Monday. :)

went well. we'll know this coming thursday about a decision. kirksville COM is great! was cool meeting fellow SDNers. chatted w/ johnDO for a long time after the interview day - was very helpful, thanks john and everyone at kirksville.

Just drop a note to see if anyone got accepted to KCOM from last week's interview.

Hey All
I too went to the interview at KCOM. I got called Wednesday night after the committee met. Apparently I am accepted pending a seat. I think that is a glorified wait-list. We'll see if it pans out. How did it go for you OUSooner?

Dr. Clink,
they told me i'm on the high alternate list and things look promising but no guarantees. so its another waiting game. again things do look on the up and up as far as my chances but at this point thats all they are = chances.
