Anyone know about the UAMS Psychiatry program?

I was wondering if anyone has any info on the UAMS Psychiatry program? Does it have a good reputation? Faculty? Attendings? etc.

Any insight or experience with this program would be appreciated.

I interviewed at UAMS. I got the impression that it has a very good reputation in the deep south, along with Emory, Tulane, and UAB. I don't know if you have interviewed there yet, but you should check it out. Faculty is great and the facilities are brand new and impressive. The state is very invested in mental health, it appears.

I have a lot of knowledge about UAMS so if you want details I can provide them.

FACILITIES: Remarkable, just built a brand new Psychiatry Research Institute that is on the main drive of campus for everyone to see. In addition the Arkansas State Hospital is just across the street and is only a few years old and is very nice. I can honestly say that I have interviewed at some great places with great facilities, but none were better than UAMS.

FACULTY: Great, I have worked with many and all were very invested in teaching both residents and students. They win awards from the medical students all the time for their teaching. I can honestly say that I have never heard of any bad attendings in Psychiatry. They are very receptive to resident feedback and would not allow residents to be treated poorly.

QUALITY OF LIFE: Really good, I worked with several interns and all were very happy and happy with the program. Call is very busy, but your services will be very managable.

RESIDENTS: All tend to get along really well with the exception of minor drama that will happen anywhere that people work together. I have never heard of any significant problems among residents. Everybody is very normal and really friendly.

REPUTATION: As you could guess I am a bit biased 🙂, but I can tell you I have received great feedback from other places I have interviewed about how good our program is. It doesn't have the name of say Emory, but it is well regarded in the South especially, mainly because those are the only places where people actually visit or learn about the program. They are actively working to increase research focus (which is eternally tied to reputation). The new Psychiatric Research Institute is developing a strong Addiction research lab and also has a fMRI 60% dedicated to research with the goal to be 100% within the next year or so. The guy spearheading that research came from Emory.

Overall I think the program is fantastic. I honestly feel that if it weren't in Little Rock, Arkansas that it would be a powerhouse program.

EDIT: Not to say Little Rock is a bad place to live, but very few people will even come and visit for themselves because of preconceived notions of Little Rock or Arkansas in general. It is actually a pretty nice city with a fantastic cost of living.

UAMS has a great reputation in Texas where I am at. I'd say it is well above Tulane and UAB in reputation. Research wise, not as impressive as Emory. Clinically, UAMS is better regarded down here.

They have remarkable facilities and great faculty. Definitely a hidden gem in the south.
