I'm interested in neuroradiology. Does anyone know what medical schools are good in pursuing this career? Is the competitiveness for this career high?

How old are you? If you're not even in medical school, it's a bit too early about thinking about a subspecialty. In any case, after medical school you need to finish a radiology residency (five years) and then do a neuroradiology fellowship (1-2 years). In the past few years, getting a radiology residency has been quite tough. So, you should be thinking of getting into a good radiology residency. If you do, getting a neuroradiology fellowship will be easy.

I imagine the competitiveness of rad subspecialties varies from year to year depending on the level of interest.

Tell me, how are candidates' (i.e. rad residents) competitiveness measured, and is there any such thing as applying to different subspeciaties in case one doesn't match into that particular year's more competitive subspecialties?

How quickly does the popularity of the various subspecialties fluctuate? e.g. I hear IR was hot a few years back, but now it's cooled down; any thoughts as to why?

Btw anyone else is welcome to chip in what they know about this; it's been a while since we've heard from Voxel, Radrules, and Rads_Resident, for instance.

Radiology fellowships in general are not very competitive. Spots remain open in every field. Musculoskeletal is hot right now. Neuroradiology is always competitive at better programs and locations, but you can find a spot somewhere no matter what because there are plenty of open ones. Interventional has many open spots throughout the country. Basically, if you want a fellowship, you can find it no problem.

hi WBC,
What about Pediatric Radiology fellowship? How tough is it to land a spot in a decent place and what are the future prospects?

Right now pedi fellowships are pretty easy, but there are VERY few good programs and they are pretty small usually 3-6 fellows AT MOST. There are only a handfull of places worth training CHOP, CHOB, Sick Babies (TO), Rainbow Babies, UCSF, U of Cincinatti. Future prospects are EXCELLENT.
