Does anyone know of any schools that offer postbac programs that significantly increase chances of admissions into their medical school based on postbac performance?

👎 This is a misconception by most. I speak from first hand experience as I attended one of these programs.

Post-bacc programs are NOT a stepping stone into any medical school. They are simply meant to help you, the applicant, strengthen your application and help you make yourself the best applicant you possibly can.

With that being said, there is obviously a certain bias towards you as you are one of their "own". However, no matter how well you do in these programs, it is NEVER a guaranteed acceptance nor can you even say it will significantly increase your chances.

Thus, the main point? If a post-bacc program will help you become a better applicant, it's a good way to show any ADCOM that you can handle the course load and you are serious about the medical field.

There are TONS of programs out there at many different schools. You posted in the Osteo forum so I'll just list a few of the DO schools.

PCOM - 1year Certificate or 2year Master's.
UMDNJ - Same
LECOM - Post-bacc
NOVA - I think has one.
UNECOM - ? Again I think has one.

Look into it and do some research. if you want some more info, you're welcome to contact me.

That's actually not always true. I know Wake Forest has a very compettitive post bac program that once completed offers automatic admission to their medical school.

yes, that is true. HOWEVER, bear in mind that the wake forest program is specifically geared for underrepresented minority students and/or disadvantaged students. http://hpap.syr.edu/PB/Wake.htm

Furthermore, I noted only Osteopathic Post-baccs because the OP listed this in the Pre-Osteo Forum originally.

I'd say that, in exception to Hexanol's posts above, the UConn postbac program significantly increases one's chances of getting into UConn med regardless of URM/disadvantaged status. All postbacs are automatically granted interviews. Of the 9 that applied for 2007, 7 (all non-URMs/disadvantageds) were accepted and 1 declined the interview (decided to matriculate elsewhere). I'm don't know what happened with the last one since we've lost touch. You only need a 3.5 post-bac GPA to stay in the program. As far as the MCAT, 2 of the acceptees whose numbers I know had low MCAT scores that would have probably kept them out of med school had they not been part of the program.

The one catch is that the program is much more competitive than most post-bac programs--there are usually 8-12 accepted out of 250-300 who apply. So while the program is certainly a leg up in the admissions process, it's quite hard to get into the program in the first place. They also strongly prefer CT residents.

From what I have seen, postbacc programs that offer linkage to schools can significantly increase chances of admission to those schools. The trade-off is that you have to pick just one, usually.

I wouldn't even seriously consider a program that didn't offer linkage to at least one school.

In the East, Bryn Mawr's consortium allows you to get an acceptance to a medical school early-on, and then as long as you continue to meet the requirements, you don't even have to go through the whole obnoxious process.

And, as far as general linkages go, I was under the impression that the majority were only for the top 1-5% of a post-bac class. If anyone had info that showed otherwise, please post. 🙂

I have been doing a lot of research and it seems to me that the ONLY programs that have linkages / deals with medical schools are the ones that are NOT remedial/enhancer programs. So, if you're like me and stayed with the bio major through college even though you slacked off for two years of your three so far.. you're not going to be able to get into a program that will GUARANTEE you acceptance anywhere.

However, most programs have at least a 60% "acceptance rate to medical school" - translation, 60% of the people who GRADUATE from their program get accepted.

If I'm wrong, please correct.

and I shall wonder again and again why oh why didn't I stick with psychology as my major??
