Has anyone else pretty much quit going to morning lectures? I find that if I stay up late and study, sleep late, and make it to afternoon lectures I do better. The only reason I go in the afternoon is lab.

you'll find more than a few people on this forum who've decided that they study better on their own, and don't go to any lectures. personally, i don't know how people can possibly do well on exams without attending lecture. who is writing your exams? the author of your textbook or your professor? also, it may be different at your school, but at my school, we get a fat packet of notes for each class, but those notes sometimes have errors and sometimes fail to explain difficult concepts thoroughly (ex. lung mechanics, respiratory physiology). the way i look at it, i could either spend 2 hours teaching myself the concepts, or simply to go lecture and get it done in an hour.

do you mind if i ask you how you've been doing on your exams so far? are you getting high scores? if so, i am surprised and very impressed. to me, lecture is essential.

depends on lecturer and their style
if they stand up their and read their notes to you or regurgitate on slides/overheards its useless. I used to always go to undergrad lectures but med school lectures were an absolute waste for me
I could never understand who would want to sit through that crap

3rd and 4th year was different though
active learning which was engaging

I am a first year. At the beginning of the year I attended every lecture and when I got home I spent all night reading reading reading. Grades at that time were C low B. I quit going to class finished semester with B's mostly b/c I was playing catch up from earlier. Last two test scores were 97 and 88 both atleast 4 points above class avg. I feel instructors read the reading they assign the night before the lecture just like they tell you to do. I think that most lecturers could care less, they are more interested in research. The only things I miss by not going to class are those little details that the lecturer thinks is "cool", which are never on board exams. I do better this way b/c I have to read concepts myself a few times which takes up a fair amount of my time. Our class notes are posted n the web before hand and someone in class is assigned (payed) to take notes from lecture and post them also.

Third year here. Barely went to lectures the first two years. And if you must know I did really well (mostly Honors w. the exception fo 1 or 2 classes that I didn't care for.) You're right the exams are written by the people who give the lecture. Inicdentally these are also the people who made the notes in that packet you receive. They tend to put stuf they feel is important in their notes and then put the same important stuff on the exam. The way I look at it I can force myself to stay awake through a 1 hour lecture or learn the material on my own in about half that time. I found that I could read through 2-3 lectures in the course of 1 hour. Beats sitting through one and not even learning that stuff well if you ask me. To me lecture was a big waste of time. Actually there was inverse relationship between the amount of lectures I attended and my score on an exam in those first two years.
