They offer very good clinical training (see a lot of trauma from being in a rough neighborhood so they say). If that's what you are concerned with they just might be better than most of the "top" schools in that sense. They don't have the brand name and seemingly unlimited resources of some of the top schools though (if you are interested in a specific field of research, you might be limited there but wouldn't be at a place like Harvard).

I liked Temple! Apparently they didn't like me. 😉 It's a great school for clinical training, as someone pointed out. You'll get to see some interesting cases since many of the patients wait until their symptoms get really bad to get medical treatment.

coach chaney is one of the winningest coaches of Div-I all-time

i remember when they used to compete for a national title every year and were ranked very high for a period about 15 years ago.

don't know what happened

I liked it there a lot. But that might have more to do with the fact that I kinda want to go somewhere far from home and very different. I spent enough time living in a quaint little suburban neighborhood so I'd love to be in a big city for medical school.

Most people think that the school looks old and that it's in a gross neighborhood - which it is - but it really doesnt bother me. I'm still not sure what's the big deal about old buldings and no med students live in that neighborhood. And like others have said, the ****ty neighborhood actually becomes a plus when you consider the fact that you'll be drawing patients from the immediate neighborhood.

If anything, the school should be known for its people. The students, administrators, and professors are all very laid back and covnersational.

For those of you who have been to Temple and Drexel, are the schools basically the same? Is there anything about Temple that makes it better curriculum-wise or in terms of clinical exposure? I've been accepted to Drexel, and I'm not sure if I should go to my Temple interview. And is Temple near the 30th Street Amtrak station?

I don't know much about about Temple, but Drexel is a great place and will offer you all of the resources that Temple has (maybe even more!). The faculty at Drexel is amazingly supportive- something that is so very important as you are trudging through med school. I think that the neighborhood of Drexel is much, much better than that of Temple. For me, it's important to feel safe walking around the place where I am spending most of my time at. Depending on where you decide to do your clinical years at Drexel, you will still get plenty of exposure to trauma if that is what you want. I know many people at Drexel who chose it over Temple and are extremely happy with their decision.

My advice is that if you have the extra money to go to the interview at Temple, then go. If you don't, then be happy that you've been accepted to a wonderful school.

If you have any questions about Drexel, feel free to PM me!

Good Luck!

wow, i was just about to PM you, mimi1! I saw your name on another thread and i noticed you were from drexel 🙂

Temple and Drexel have entirely different feels. Temple is very urban while Drexel is primarily suburban, though you can get a certain level of urban/suburban exposure in your rotations. Personally, I think Drexel is still completely unstable after having changed names and administrations several times in the past 30 years. Every physician I know that trained at MCPH reminds me of that fact when I mention the school. That's not to say it's a bad school or you won't get a good education. My senior med student friends there tell me that a major issue facing the school now is that the healthcare system it's attached to is going down the tubes, and there's serious concerns about how they're going to put their large class sizes in rotations. Temple's big problems have been aging facilities, lack of study space, and lack of financial aid (also a Drexel problem). But, I view their getting off probation recently as a good thing, as now they're having all that pressure to get things fixed.

As for Temple, it's not really close to 30th street station, but it's about 30 minutes or so on the subway and then just off the subway in north Philly. My fiancee was accepted to Temple and Drexel, and she chose Temple, mostly because she felt the clinical experience would be better. Since nobody here is a third year or grater, I don't think anyone is really qualified to comment on how true that is.

Good luck!
