I've hit my wits-end and I really need to process some things with "anonymous" professionals. I am considering leaving the field. The same field I've looked forward to since 8th grade.

Options:

  1. leaving altogether for another field
  2. sticking it out with all of the other mental health professionals
  3. planning to practice in another state
  4. cross fingers that things will be better by the end of a doctoral program (all but one of which I'm interested in would be outside of this state)

Even if you aren't in NC but you can relate to systemic concerns that just seem overwhelming, I'd love to hash it out in this thread.

For anyone unfamiliar, likely most of you, here's a link to the sad things going on in my state right now.

It has been nothing short of painful to work in this environment, watch my coworkers become burnt out, watch patient care suffer, and for the first time ever, contemplate going into an entirely different field. I just don't see relief in sight... but I might be too close to see a positive end. Encouragement welcomed.

Wow, that's just awful. If I were you, I'd go to another state (if you can) because I can't imagine that you'll be any better off as a psychologist...

Thanks guys. It is all a lot to process. I finally collapsed and told some of my friends in the field and it turns out that a lot are having similar thoughts... especially those of us who are under 30.

I never imagined it would be like this but I'm honestly letting my finances suffer because I just don't want to go back into the field. I get nauseated just reading the job descriptions. There are tons of jobs available... but that is almost more troubling. That means people are bouncing around. Ugh.

Thanks to you. It helped to vent about it for a minute and just get grounded.
