So I hear that the market in Omaha, NE is really competitive, and I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions on where best to look. Are there any good local listings, or does anyone know if there's upcoming openings?

I really enjoyed the city when I visited in the Fall, and I was wondering if anyone had any idea if there was a possibility of getting work in the area. I've been applying to most everything I can find, so now just playing the waiting game (not fun).

No ocean coast = sounds like a ****ty place to live.

I like the coast just as much as the next guy, but I'm more of a Midwestern guy myself. I'll save the coast for vacation and keep on looking in the Midwest for now.

Not right now but from what I heard this time last year, the job market there is pretty tight.

It was tight 20-plus years ago when I was in school, between Creighton (which was my second choice of schools) and University of Nebraska, both long-standing schools with a good reputation, BTW.

That's what I've been hearing. I'm confident in my own education as well, but not having the same network in the area may make it a little more difficult. Next step is gonna be making some calls to the pharmacies and trying to get my name out there, better than nothing I think!

Omaha is a tough market to get into, although experience talks. There are few opening now and I know that some hospitals are mostly staffing with part-time pharmacists with fewer benefits.

Keep in mind that right now there are about 200 soon to be graduated pharmacy students flooding the market with applications or have offers from pharmacies where they have been working as interns.

It looks like a pretty good number of those in my class are looking to go to residencies, but there are still many more applicants than full-time open positions in this area. If you can go rural, there are a number of positions actively hiring in the Grand Island area. I've also seen KC retail pharmacies actively recruiting from my class as well, so that looks like a stronger market.

good luck!

It seems pretty competitive, that's for sure! I interviewed with Target out there earlier in the year, but no dice that time. I'll keep looking. Best of luck to you!

Thanks -

I've started looking, but have only seen a handful of retail spots open and those have been floater or part-time. I only know of 2 classmates thus far with Omaha offers, and they are continuing with the retail chains they have interned with. Most of the posting I've seen are in the Lincoln area, which is a solid commute but could be done.

It's too early to get discouraged really, but we are keeping "plan B (relocating)" in mind as graduation/boards are coming up.

From what I've heard there are better options later in the summer/fall when the herd thins a bit, but if I'm still looking at that point it will be on the edge of a nervous breakdown!

Haha, talk about a nervous breakdown! It is really exhausting putting in so many job applications, but luckily I have an interview coming up with Wags about an hour west of Omaha. I'll probably commute it if I end up taking the job, but I'm also just thinking about waiting until the summer and seeing whats available then.

Hopefully we can both find a decent job!
