Anyone mind helping me narrow my list of schools to 10?

since somethinpositiv is outta town, I have no one to go to for advice. But what the hey, there are plenty of other knowledgeable people on SDN so I'll give it a shot. I've read all the guidelines in the sticky post so I'll provide the information accordingly.

-
California
- Asian (yea I know -_-)
- 20 AA, 21 TS, 24 PAT, 17RC's probably gonna screw me over
- overall GPA w/: 3.687, overall GPA w/o: 3.72, science GPA w/: 3.63, science GPA w/o: 3.66
- west coast preferred but not important
- urban preferred but no important
- facilities, location, reputation, research, price (from most important to least)
- Are you Christian conservative and would prefer a school that was? No
- Shadowing Hours around 300 GP
- No research experience though and volunteer hours aren't stellar (150+?)
- Schools you are definitely applying to no matter what: Definitely applying to UCLA, UCSF, USC, UoP
- 10 other schools you were considering applying to
So far I am thinking of:
UCLA
UCSF
UoP
USC
Maryland
Midwestern AZ
(I am pretty sure about these 6, however, ...)

Tufts (I have 2 CC english classes transfered to my 4 year university)
BU (same reason)
NYU (same reason)
Temple (same reason)
(should I still apply to these? maybe not Tufts though?)

LLU (I am an atheist and is clueless about SDA or religions in general)
Western (initial accreditation. I know I can't judge a school based on this, but I think I'll wait)

Penn (Probably outta my league like UCLA, but UCLA''s instate for me)
Columbia (same reason)

Case (random)
Detroit Mercy (random)

Soooo can people help me out here, and add 4 more schools onto my list. i would also like to hear opinions about backup schools, since my stats are really mediocre

I think you will be a good candidate for Upenn and Columbia if the rest of your app is good. I think you would be fine with UCLA, UCSF, UOP, USC, Maryland (that's far from the west coast lol), Midwestern, and go ahead and add NYU, BU, Temple as well.

Cross out Tuft, Boston, LLU and the random ones

may i know the reasoning behind crossing out tufts and BU (cc obviously) but not NYU and Temple? do they not view the CC classes as seriously or what?

thanks for the fast replies, really appreciate it

NYU and Temple set limitations on CC credits. Boston doesn't accept any CC credits for pre-reqs, but it may be replaced if a higher level class in the same discipline is taken at a 4yr. Tufts doesn't accept any CC credits at all, period.

Tufts DOES accept CC credits. They accepted all my credits from my Associates degree, plus Eng 101 and 102 as pre-reqs.

yeah, i don't understand why everyone says tufts doesn't accept cc credits. i talked to them about this and they said as long you you retake your pre-reqs at a 4-year, you're fine.

Read back to yourself what you just wrote....:bang:

From the Tufts Dental website...
Q. I have completed some of the Tufts pre-requisite courses at a Community College. Will these credits fulfill your requirements?
A. Unfortunately, all pre-requisite coursework must be completed at an accredited 4 year college or university. Applicants who have received community college credits must either retake those courses at a four year institution or take an equal number of credits in upper level coursework in the same discipline at a four year institution.

You weren't wrong for advising the OP not to apply there..look at what you found from their website! But..

my situation is proof that this doesn't always hold 100%. The OP is in the same boat I was in, and I was accepted into Tufts.

I would add Penn to the list because your stat fits their profile. You actually have a higher chance for Penn than you expect.

Also add NYU, Temple, UNLV, and Western.

But I would omit Columbia because they do want high DAT scores like UoP

several of my friends are SDA and according to them it is very difficult to get accepted into LLU as a non-SDA. 70% of the class is SDA and of the 100 students, only 4 have a non-specified religion. They also require a letter from a spiritual leader/pastor.

Something that I have heard over and over from students and dentists alike is that cost should be one of the top factors in your decision (if not THE top factor). I personally couldnt imagine taking on the debt that going to a private school would require. I would say look at your instate options first and foremost and then go out from there. Just my opinion though...

UNLV is out of the question since i think they require 4 LORs while I only got 3.

also, I think I misread columbia's LOR req in that they need 3 professor LORs... i only got 2 science professors and 1 from a dentist. but it was outta my league to begin with anyways lol

and about the cost, my uncle is going to front it for me with no interest. so i guess i got lucky there.

No joke.... that is awesome for you!

hmmm...maybe they are more lenient on non-science pre-reqs.
