as the title indicates --- i am trying to get some info on UNC. i was told that UNC gives 2.5-3 wks notice prior to the interview date. the 1st one is coming up (Sept. 16) --- anyone applying there heard anything?

does anyone know if they inform you via snail mail, email, or phone call?

Thanks

No... I'm not getting any love from UNC. Did I have to apply there to post here? Well, regardless, no love! 🙂

UNC will call you for an interview. In fact they do call about 2.5-3 weeks prior to the interview date. I would anticipate that the first batch of interview calls will be made by the end of the week.

I thought the first interview date was oct 1st?

I think I would rather be in the November interview right before UNC's adcom meets....you think you would be the freshest in their mind right?

Last year I was at the first interview date...and obviously i did not get in😕

I dont know if anyone knows this but how the committee works there is that all the interviewers meet and you must be nominated by one of your interviewers who then speaks on your behalf and then it is put to a vote. If you recieve an appropriate number of votes...your in.
UNLESS....since they consider 40% interview/30% gpa/30% dat....they give you a score for each one of those and if you score is above a certain cutoff your automatically admitted...then nominations and so on...until the class is filled....

JUST FYI

yea alot of people need to get that idea out of thier heads of early interview means early admission..they pick the best candidates, regardless of when they interview.

I doubt it was because you were interviewed first. If you left a good impression they don't forget it. I think if you're in-state and you have 3.0 and 16DAT you will get an interview, even though your chance is low they will let you say what you have to say because you're instate. They will send out letters soon, it's time to impress them. Good luck all!

Does UNC interview most of the applicatants who are in state? I just submitted my app so it's going to be a while til i hear anything back but I was just curious. Oh, and do they prefer people who went to UNC for undergrad, just from their stats online it does appear that they do but are there are a lot of predent students coming from UNC? I went to UNC for undergrad and I still have no clue, lol!

Yes they do take a good number of UNC grad's...which hey it's their school why not...im in the UNC system but go to Wilmington

I received a phone call this morning about the first interview date on the
16th of Sept. Its not much warning, but thats good news for me: less time to worry about the interview! I'm sure people will be hearing from them all this week!

Congrats, I got the call too! 👍 I will probably see many of you there 🙂

Did they give you a call for the interview or just to let you know that the first interview is on sep 16th?

roughly 29/80 are from unc, only 15 are out of state. Man, those out of staters got to have some mad stats to get in.

okay---starting to get anxious :scared: haven't gotten a call 🙁

when did those of you who have had a call to interview submit your aadsas apps?

Holy Crap, So I started the secondary today and it's going to take FOREVER. Do they want full blown essays for each of the questions? What have most of you all done for the app?

short answer --- i know, pretty thorough!!! i had a succinct paragraph for each one, unless it was one of those that asked you to list words to describe yourself or something like that - in which case i just listed words.

i have no idea how seriously they look at that b/c it is rather long, but i definitely put some time and thought into my answers.

The secondary took me a while too; I might have written too much! 😳 I wrote two "medium-sized" essays for the first two questions and then I wrote very short paragraphs for the last of them. Just write as much as you need to get your point across.

Sounds good to me, thanks a lot for the advice. I guess I better get started............😀

It is usual of UNC to interview mostly out-of staters at the first interview. They will however grant a few in-state interviews for the sept 16th date but for the most part only out of state.

anybody from North Carolina? or is this mostly out-of-staters on here that are applying ?

I was granted an interview last year, but did not get accepted. This is round II for me. It's a great school and very tough to get in. They do like second year applicants too. Or maybe that's just my hope.

I heard the same thing about the first interview being mostly out of state kids. I'm an in-stater too UNCW.

btw, is it the in-staters' understanding that we are "competing" for slots against people from our own undergrad schools (if you went to school in NC). it looks to me like they accept roughly the same # of people from each NC school every year?

so, if someone went to UNCW (sorry to single you out UNCW, but it is rather obvious where you went to school 😉 ) then is he/she competing for the 1, 2 or 3 slots designated for UNCW applicants?

I understand it to be that way. UNC is big on their "numbers." They like to see a certain number of this and a certain number of that. BLAH

I'm in-state too, went to UNC undergrad and would love to go back for grad. Their numbers are pretty high, where the heck do all of these smart in-state people come from anyways?! darn smart people, haha

Yes they generally try to space out the #'s from where they went to undergrad. It's because they dont want to saturate the dentist pop. in one certain area.
But as I was informed (2nd time applicant as well)they only took 2 UNCW ppl last year and 4 the year before so it's more cyclical (sp?) and you may see 3-4 ppl from UNCW go this year. I know alot of friends that are applying.

BTW...who is the other UNCW person on here?

I just got a call from UNC for a Sept 16th interview! Just a heads up for everyone waiting.

p.s. I live in Chapel Hill. Please let me know if anybody needs information on where to stay and good places to celebrate your interview on Friday or Saturday night!

did you go to UNC for undergrad or are you an out-of-state applicant?

it seems like out-of-staters and UNC grads are filling up this interview date. i guess i am just wondering b/c it seems like they may be interviewing the "competing" seats at once like UNCW grads will all be on the same date, UNCA grads will all be on the same date, etc just a thought

maybe if they arrange it that way they can more easily compare applicants for the 2-3 seats designated for each NC school

btw, my hypothesis is that the admission #'s for UNC are on the higher end due to out of state applicants with really high DAT scores and GPA's, i mean they accept like 20 out-of-state people in a class of 80 or so which DEFINITELY influences those numbers

i mean't you 😛 i should have written your whole username, sorry!!😳

Went to UNC undergrad and graduate schools. Maybe you're on to something. But last year my interview was in October.

My interview last year was oct 1st as well. They did not have a sept. interview date last year...but talking amongst my fellow interviewee's i found that I only met a handfull of NC residents while most were out of state (Utah)

just as a recommendation....will those that have interviews on Sept. 16th fill out the interview sheet on this site? Just asking for your overall feel on the interview this year...last year i felt it was very relaxed except that my interviewer forgot to come out and get me so I only recieved a 15min. interview😕

If you don't mind me asking UNCWDentist why didn't you get into UNC last year? You have great stats (much better than mine!), did you apply as a junior? Also did you apply to any other schools last cycle?

you know...i've been asking myself that same question for the past year..yes i applied to louisville/unc/suny/nova/case....granted all 5 interviews...but am waiting on UNC. My family is moving here, my cousin is going to do his med school residency here and my g/f lives here so I really have no reason to move.
I met with Dr. Guckes (dean of admissions) earlier this year and he told me that my interview scores were very high as well but that I just somehow did not get in.
I believe this has given me another year to develop/mature and really appreciate undergrad. Im taking a full load this semester 17hrs and really just shoring up any weaknesses i may have. I did not re-take the DAT because I felt it wasnt warranted and was also told by many adcom's that I really did not need to.
Of course if I do not get in this year I will have to go back and review that gen chem material (ahhh) and I will probably do a non-thesis masters program next year.
But for right now im in school/shadowing/working and enjoying a little surf. Hopefully Ernesto throws some of that head high surf this way.
😀

UNCWDentist I really don't see why you didn't get in first time around. I bet this year you are even better candidate with a really good shot of getting in. If not there are always other dental schools to look into. It's only 4 years and VCU isn't that far away either. Has there been any big change to your application? Extra classes? more shadowing? Work experiences? To be honest I'm not terribly optomistic about getting in this year, my undergrad grades weren't great and even though i have retaken some classes/taken more it's still up quite up there. My DAT is competitive but I don't know if it's going to be enough to get in. You don't happen to know how heavely the DAT score is weighed at UNC do you? Honestly I just want to get into A school, haha, doesn't matter which one I can get into.

Also laelialudisia, I see what you are an orchid lover ;-) I actually was going to do horticulture as a career and orchids were my speciality. I even did a training program for a year with orchids until I decided to change my mind and do dentistry. Have to be honest ludsias aren't my fav (no big showy flower!), beautiful plants though. Laelias on the other hand are a different story.

yeah the i have had some changes to improve my app....
- Work/shadow 50+ more hours at dental office
- BA in Chemistry
-Research on P.gingivalis from a genomics standpoint ( i did a little research on the quorum sensing system involved in P.gingivalis's ability to withstand pH/temp/H202...and research on it's counter oxidative system
-20 page DIS on Ethnobotanical effects in Dentistry
- Travelled to New Orleans for 7 days to help with Hurricane Katrina clean-up...

...I hope I have done enough to improve my applicaiton for this year and I am just waiting for the question of what have you been doing this past year b/c I am ready&waiting for that one😀

Oh and yes they weigh 30%DAT/30%GPA/40%Interview...and your assigned a point value for each....reach a certain plateau and your in. After that you have to get nominated and voted in.

yeah I know, I wish I would have asked that but i did not want to be to invasive. Your given an interview by a student(very casual)...and 2 by prof's or researchers so you know the student interview is more for questions so i'd say the 2 prof interviews probably weigh around 19% apiece lol and yes they are probably very subjective to what they assign points for.😕

you have done a lot to add/improve your chances for this year. i have a good feeling that you will get in this year 🙂

my fingers and toes are crossed for all of us 😀

L.L.- where else are you applying?

when is your interview for nova...sucks musc wont look at us until november

So UNCWDentist, how would you feel if you knew people get admitted into UNC with 15 DATs and 2.6s? Why don't you ask Dr. Guckes about that and post his answer. There's a lot more that goes on behind closed doors than you realize.

Every school is political to some degree, but from what I hear, you are correct...UNC is one of the worst offenders. But hey, that's their prerogative...nowhere is it written that the applicants with the highest stats are the ones who have to be admitted. It's their school and they can take whoever they want. They don't seem to have a problem churning out high quality dentists , they have an excellent specialization rate, and they continue to attract the best students from across the country so who are we to argue with the way they are doing things?
