Anyone pleasantly surprised with M-1 thus far?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Actually, as a pre-med, I really appreciate hearing from med students that aren't miserable. Even when you're happy, hearing other people complain constantly about the stuff you enjoy can color your own views about those things. So, thank you to the people who spoke up in this thread.

Annnnd voila. The purpose of this thread reveals itself.

I agree, I find this thread quite refreshing. I find all the threads about how miserable everyone is and how many want to quit disheartening. So I second the gratitude to those of you who contributed positivity to this thread. 👍

It's miserable for some, not others. I'd say most people are happy.

Med school (at least the first 1/4 of 1st year, lol) isn't as bad as I had imagined, but it's still a lot more work than undergrad. Cramming in undergrad = 1 day/night. Cramming in med school = 2-3 day minimum. lol

I thought med school biochem was way easier than undergrad biochem actually.

Bah. I'll be glad when I can put my biochem text on the shelf.

Everything else, I really enjoy learning 😳

M1 isn't easy, but it's not the worst thing I've ever experienced. Of course, there's still M2, M3, M4, Intern year, etc.!

For me, living in the moment, doing what I need to get through each step in front of me is how I deal. There are days I want to pull out my hair, but seeing the fruits of my labor makes it worth it.

I was only truly miserable once or twice, and most of the time, I was enjoying what I was doing. Just remember that when things are going well, it's not really worth making a thread. "Hey guys, I studied fairly hard, and I got a pretty decent grade, and my friends and I went out afterwards and had a good time." "Hey guys, I studied extremely hard, and I got the highest grade on the test, and my parents rewarded me with a sweet vacation to the Caribbean with my supermodel girlfriend."

Not so much. People make threads when they're down. Most of the time, we're not miserable. However, it was still much more difficult than college in most aspects. The one easier aspect is that you have less to focus on. As an M1-M2, you just study and take tests. That's it. You don't need to be doing research, volunteering, MCAT prep, etc. Once you get in a solid groove, you have a decent amount of free time.

I was beyond intimidated just before I got into medical school because of all the horror stories I'd been told. Lesson to self: don't always listen to disgruntled anonymous people on the internet.

First year IS comparatively easy. Especially if you're at a pass fail school. I knew this in first year. It's not like it's some amazing hidden truth.

Just hold up on the "lolz med school is so much easier than they claim!" until you're more than 2 months into it. Pre-step 1 and certain clerkships will shut you up quickly.

I don't mind the work and I don't mind 'hard', it's the 'miserable' I mind. Hopefully when I get started I'll have a healthy balance like some of you guys and get more enjoyment out of the experience than misery. 🙂

I'm sure you will. Life hasn't changed "too much" for me yet. I still spend lots of time with my wife, go home and visit family a lot (although I'll study there), spend way too much time on the internet, etc. But, I don't play video games right now... I want to work that back into my daily (or weekly) life. lol

I second (or third...?🙄) this. With all the constant doom in gloom in the pre-med forum, it's awesome to hear that you guys who are actually going through it are enjoying it, it's a big sigh of relief 😀

I'm enjoying everything so far, but I haven't started anatomy yet so I'm waiting for the proverbial **** to hit the fan 😉

Haven't started anatomy yet. That may make a difference. I dunno though... my school tends to do very well on the boards, though, so it can't be that they take it too easy on us.

And I thought my school was one of the later ones (we started anatomy on 9/30, and it runs through Christmas). When do you guys start?

I was feeling pretty competent about med school until I hit anatomy. That course has brought me to my knees.

We start in the next couple of months.

Anything I said about med school not being too bad, I'm taking back right now. I finally put the wrong class off way too long. Result = probable fail. 😱

Moral: keep up on your studies.

I am pleasantly surprised that MS1 seems to be just a bunch of memorization, which makes this first year easier than undergrad.

No way... memorization is the hard part. Stuff that was just "work it out / figure it out" like physics, ochem, etc. I liked. Less time in the books.

In medical school, efficiency is the key to happiness.

Efficiency --> less time in the stacks --> more time for life --> more time for sleep --> better grades <=> happiness.
