The question I have for you all is: Have any of you received an HPSP offer and then turned it down? Any regrets on this decision, or are you glad you made that call? Thanks in advance for your shared experiences/stories/input!

My fiancé and I both rejected the army and navy HPSP. We talked to some navy/army dentists on dentaltown and the general concensus was that there is a lot of bs to deal with and it's only going to get worse with the downsizing in the next few years. Deployments will become more likely and that's not something we want to deal with, especially if kids are involved after D school.

A big reason for declining the scholarships is that we didnt want to delay our lives by 4 years..when we graduate, we are free to go anywhere and do whatever we want (specialize/associate/jump into ownership). Time is precious and we would rather have freedom with some debt than being bogged down for 4 years. However, I should be graduating with 120k of debt and my fiancé 200k. People with 300-600k of debt would definitely be better off going the HPSP route to avoid such a huge financial burden.

BasicG, thanks so much for your input and sharing your conversation summary with the navy/army dentists on dentaltown. I'd read a lot here on SDN but didn't think to explore Dentaltown.

I was slowly coming to a conclusion similar to yours: being willing to take on a moderate amount of debt but to have the freedom to go wherever I and my girlfriend please. If I had hefty undergraduate debt and was going to, as you said, take on 300-600k debt, the scholarship would be more appealing. Hearing your input just solidified my my resolve.

LGL

What is that

HPSP stands for Health Professions Scholarship Program

If your debt is 450k+ I would take the HPSP or NHSC. You ain't gonna be free because everything you do after D group will be in consideration of your student loans

You have to pay for school either way, just with HPSP you're paying with your time and with your loss of autonomy. HPSP is a great option if you have a reason to do it besides the money.

If you're willing to work in a remote underserved area, you are better off not taking the scholarship. Open a practice in those areas and keep all the profits for yourself. In 4 years, you can sell if you want to leave.

Thanks guys! Going to make the call today and inform them of my decision not to take the scholarship.
