Fluoride has it's greatest effects when applied topically (tooth paste) and on flat surfaces as opposed to occlusal surfaces. I'm not saying water fluoridation is unnecessay, but it probably isn't as effective at fighting tooth decay as before because we get fluoride from so many other sources now (ie. toothpaste, soda, bottled water). These days publically fluoridated water is mostly helpful, from a dental standpoint, for children whose teeth are still developing than in adults. I think the idea was that not much fluoride actually makes it through the blood vessels to the inner surfaces of the pulp of adults while in children the tooth can develop with flouride from the get go, establishing a better foundation. I am convinced that flouridated water does our communities good. I can't imagine how bad our teeth would be without fluoride. I think our only concern is whether our patients are getting too much fluoride. We should know the amounts of natural fluoride occuring in the water of the communities we practice in.

Going back to the OP links, I think this is interesting, and places an emphasis on how one should look at research and the biases the researcher may or may not have based on allegiances. However, the flouride toxity mentioned is in the gas form and in very large amounts. I don't think the 1 ppm is damaging.

We don't flouridate the water here and people have a ridiculous amount of cavities. I'm 29 and I've had 4 root canals so far, while most of my friends who didn't grow up here have only a cavity or two...and they never even floss!
