Hi
Haven't really seen any posts about Penn State 🙁 so I figure I'd start one.
I for one am psyched about this school and can't wait till August.
I'll be moving there from NYC -- quite a change! I used to live in a small town, though, so I'm hoping that I'll be able to adjust.

Later,

greenpink🙂

hey good luck at Penn State. it always sucks when the school you're going to isn't a popular SDN school. I got into Penn State, but I'll be going to UCD, since its closer, warmer, and doesn't make me crave Reeses' peanut butter cups at all hours of the night.
Good luck on that move adjustment, theres as many people in one building in NYC as there are in the whole town of hershey! quite a change indeed, but i think you're definitely doing yourself a favor by trading smells. my gf just got back for NYC and she said the city smells really bad, like garbage. is it really that noticeable? anyways, good luck. when are you moving out there?

There are some parts of NYC that always smell: the subway tunnels and platforms, etc. Like, I'll be walking down the stairway into the subway station, and this warm draft of putred air will kind of rush into my face. I can't stand it.
As for the city itself, I think that I can say that it smells. Of course living in it every day-- you get used to it. The worst, though, is when I return from visiting my family in British Columbia, Canada (where the air smells like blossoms and pine trees)--then the city is really hard to take.
I think I'll like Hershey just because it's green overall.
anyway, i'm rambling.
thanks for your kind words and wishes for success.

i'll be moving down there right before orientation, which starts aug 11th

Hey Greenpink! I'm going to Penn State this fall as well. That is, if I don't get off the waitlist elsewhere. But regardless, I'm pretty psyched to go to Penn State...I chose it over MCV because it has an optional clinical rotations at Cleveland Clinic, one of the best hospitals in the country. Plus that anesthesiology room they showed us with those robot dummies were impressive. Who needs more distractions anyway? Good ole bmore is only 1.5 hrs away and NY is 3.5 hrs away. I just hope Harrisburg has some asian markets. Have you seen Harrisburg yet?

hey aznwangsta

no, not seen harrisburg yet.
do you know if there are any buses from hersh to harr?

i thought that anatomy dummy was impressive aswell. i would have liked to have seen the actually anatomy lab, though. i just hope there are windows.

are you living on campus?

ciao

Hey GP.

Yup, I'm living on campus. 374 rent is not bad at all, esp incl utilities. I don't know about buses, but I'm sure you won't have any problems catching a ride. I have a car, and will give you rides if our schedules match. 🙂 Slowly moving in from b'more starting August 5. Are you living by yourself? I'm worried a bit cuz I don't know what my roommate is like at all. Only know his name.

Hey guys-

I'll be seeing you at PSU in about a month, too! I'm from PA and live about two hours from Hershey. I'm not thrilled about it's un-urbanness, but I think the coolness of our classmates will make up for that. You can have a good time just about anywhere as long as the people are fun, right?

See ya on the 11th! 🙂

Anyone else going to PSU thus far? I'm curious as all get out what this school is really like. If you know people there that have given you feedback, please post!

A long-winded BuMp

greenpink--you're in luck. They JUST (read: 2 days ago) added a CAT bud route from Hershey to Harrisburg. However, even with this addition, you may crave a personal vehicle in this area. Everything is pretty spread out. I'm sure you'll be able to find rides.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Good Luck!!

befreedman - thanks for the info. it's nice to hear.
How far is Hershey from Harrisburg anyway?

I'm driving to Hershey next weekend to move my stuff in -- I'm not actually myself moving in until right before orientation (the early official move-in date was basically required to get a place on campus)

Does anyone know the proximity of things like grocery stores and banks to psucom?

has anyone here actually seen the on-campus apartments?

Hi everyone! It's so good to read posts from other classmates. I'll also be a first year, although I moved into my on-campus apartment in late May and have spent a few weekends there all summer. My roommate is living there now and working at the hospital, so we have everything all set up. The apartments are really nice, the bedrooms are about medium-sized, the kitchen is basically a hallway but has tons of cabinet space, but the living room is monstrous with a gigantic coat closet. As for Harrisburg...I took a few hours one day and drove around the entire Hershey area exploring. Harrisburg is about 20 minutes away, and they have all sorts of fun clubs, bars, restaurants, and other things to do. There is a AA minor league baseball team there (the Harrisburg Senators) - I think they're with the Expos. There is a mall, the Harrisburg East mall, on the way there, it's not the King of Prussia plaza but it'll do. There is a Giant about 5 minutes away, a Weis even closer. In the same shopping center as the Weis there is a K-Mart, liquor store (haha just thought some of us might want that info eventually), Fulton Bank, Applebees, and tons more. Hmm....there is an Isaac's sandwich shop really close to campus. It is a central PA delicacy, you have to get a pretzel bread sandwich. 🙂 Let me know if you want more info, I'll be glad to help!

Hey PennStaters,

Quick question...did you guys get in touch with your future roommates yet? Or PaDoc2be how did you get info of your roommate? Need to find out when my roomie's coming to determine furiture stuff? Are you guys psyched yet?😉

aznwangsta -- you were given phone # and address of your rooomate, right?
Just checking.

I met my roomate at Second Look Day -- we became immediate friends, and then put each other's names on our housing applications.

Ya, the apartments are pretty cool. They seem huge - especially considering that I'm coming from nyc where everything is basically tiny.

I moved in last Friday at about 2am. The one thing that I forgot to bring was lighting -- and lighting seems to be the only thing that these apartments don't have (except for kitchen and bathroom).

I'm psyched
Catcha all later

Hey everybody, welcome to Penn State. I'm in my fourth year there and can vouch for it being a great school. I happened to stumble across your thread while searching the emergency medicine threads. If there's anything you want to know about Hershey or the hospital feel free to ask.

Casey

And yes, there are some good asian markets in Harrisburg. I think my wife knows where to find them.

Hi guys,
About the roomie thing, I also met mine at Second Look Day. We chatted for awhile, figured out we wanted to live together, and called the school. I happened to have a ton of furniture and she had very little, so it worked out well. You definitely should call your roommate, you don't want to both show up on the same day and end up with 2 of everything! And greenpink mentioned a good point....bring as many lamps as you can! The living room and bedroom areas don't have any, I have a few and still could probably use some more. The nice thing is they have a good number of outlets around, but you will probably also need some extension cords. Well, I will be out there around the 7th or so for good.... Good luck moving in everyone and I will see you all in two weeks!!!
Jen
