Anyone transferred from Ross?

I've searched previous threads, but cannot find anything on vets who started at Ross then transferred to a Vet school back in the states. I'm considering this route and wanted to pick a brain of someone who had done it.

KSU usually has a couple, I think, but they'd probably tell you to never plan on doing it that way from the start. I think I know of one person at OKSU as well, now a 4th year. I don't really know her that well, though...

i'm not sure this is what you're looking for, but i know that Penn has several students from Ross and other Caribbean schools for their fourth year rotations. they didn't get to transfer, say, after their first year, but they're now full time penn students for their last year.

could be worth it, havent heard a bad thing about their experiences yet.

Just to clarify what Emio was saying: the fourth-year caribbean students aren't technically transfer students. They are completing their clinical year at an AVMA-accredited vet school, which is a graduation requirement from the caribbean schools. They are not technically students of their host school--but they are very welcome at these places! 🙂

These caribbean students--those doing their fourth year in the U.S.--will get their DVM degree from Ross/SGU/St. Matthews/whichever school they've been attending. Their degree will NOT come from Penn/KSU/OkSU/whatever. Until these schools are accredited, they will have to undergo whichever foreign licensing requirement there is.

Just wanted to clarify--it can be confusing! Good luck!

That's right. We have LOTS of Ross students doing their clinicals. However, the one girl I was speaking of actually transferred tween 2nd and 3rd years I think. It's not impossible, but I'm 99% sure that it's pretty damn hard to do (plus there might be other people thinking of doing the same thing).

Don't go to a Caribbean school with the intent of transferring. While a few students may be able to transfer, the majority will not.

That's an option I was looking at. I knew about the clinical rotation the 4th year, but I was talking a true transfer before that stage. I know most classes have students who leave during the 1st and 2nd years and didn't know if they would accept a student from Ross to fill that spot.

There are many opportunities to transfer. Other students will let you know about it is you ask nicely. You must get stellar grades, min, 3.5 but more like a 4.0. I know 2 people are transferring into Tufts, 2 to GA, and one to OK this summer...

I came down here with that thought in the back of my mind, but I doubt I will even apply to transfer. I am learning so much down here, and there is so much culture to absorb.....

I'm so glad to hear that. I think that Ross is one of the schools that give an opportunity to good students who will make terrific vets, and, especially having no state school and only a few seats, I'm feeling kind of thankful that there may be a plan B, and that other people are successful because of it.👍

So, I myself haven't actually transferred, but I worked with a doctor that went to Ross for a year and then transferred to UTK. Basically all he did was say he wanted to transfer and then he had to take the finals from the first year to make sure he was up to snuff. From what I've researched, though, that has changed in the past xx years.

I'm also at Ross right now, and I always thought of it as an option that I could look into if I want to later on. I'm still not sure if I want to yet, but it's nice to know that the option to at least try is there. If not, I'm also perfectly happy staying here for the next 2ish years. The main reason I might want to transfer, though, is not Ross itself (I LOVE it here so far, with the exception of one professor, and you know there's always going to be at least one that you don't like), but rather the proximity to friends and ability to go home for holidays. Besides, food here can be a bit scary sometimes. 🙄

Anyway, here is what I have gleaned from the bit of research I did on transferring: several schools accept transfers, but those that do only accept as many transfer students as the number of seats they have free. That is to say, if 3 people drop out of the program before 2nd year starts, they will accept 3 transfer students into the 2nd year. Some schools accept transfers into the 3rd year, but this seems to be less common. Different schools have different requirements for applying: some want your undergrad transcripts, some only want the vet school ones. All of them want a statement on why you want to transfer and a letter of good standing from your current Dean. I think most of them also interview for transfers, which would be a bit of an issue, since we only have 2-3 week breaks in between semesters, but I think something could be worked out.

I honestly don't know how likely/difficult it is to transfer, so I would be sure that you can live with the decision to come here and stay before you do, just in case it doesn't work out for transferring. This is a big decision I have to make, too- I might just try to apply and save the actual decision of whether to do it or not for after I know whether I get in somewhere else. 😳 Like I said, I think the school is fantastic so far, and I've made a few really good friends that I would definitely miss.

Just FYI for anyone considering transferring from the carib (or anywhere) to UTK: Class of 2012 is 10 over capacity right now, so a lot of people would have to leave/fail out in order for there to be room. I'd be really surprised if they took any transfers for 2012.
