I just attempted to login to my AMCAS application in order to reference a question on a different thread. Every time I tried, it informed me that I'm running an "unsupported browser." WTF? I'm running mozilla firefox, so I brushed the dust off my internet explorer and fired it up. Nope, not that either. according to the AMCAS website, their only supported browsers are:
For PC users, AMCAS supports the following browser versions:

  • Internet Explorer 7.0
  • Internet Explorer 6.0
  • Internet Explorer 5.5
  • Netscape 7
  • Firefox 1.0.2
  • Firefox 1.5
  • Firefox 2.0
  • Firefox 3.0
Well this is a new computer that came with internet explorer 8. Below the list of browsers, it explains how you can make IE 8 work with a few button presses. I don't know why my firefox doesn't work, as it is version 3.6.

I wonder if the AMCAS tech support is just slacking off? I mean seriously you aren't going to support the latest versions of the most popular browsers? Or maybe they believe that this late in the application cycle noone needs to log in?

If I remember right it does not support the latest "big" update to firefox 3, you may have to downgrade.

It happened much earlier in the cycle. I have a mac and once I updated my firefox and realized that none of my browsers were working I was all 😱. Somebody here posted an addon for firefox though that let you change the default user agent and basically trick AMCAS into thinking you're running IE 7 or whatever and log in.

Yes, I had the same problem. I upgraded to Firefox 3.5 last summer, then shortly after tried to finish up my AMCAS application... so frustrating. It took forever to figure out how to download an old version of the browser. If I remembered how I'd tell you... but I don't. I can tell you I'm running 3.0.18 right now, and it opens AMCAS.

I already had updated IE and Firefox on my computer... so I ended up having to download netscape (potentially the worst browser ever)

I ran into the same problem today. AMCAS is not formatted for the updated versions of Firefox and Explorer. I downloaded the Netscape option, which is the 3rd or 4th one on the unsupported browser screen, and it worked!! Netscape is different but you will be able to access your AMCAS.

I've had to deal with that a few times now just to create an account. Luckily I am not applying this year but I wanted to see the application.

I ended up having to dust off an old computer that still had IE 6 on it. Then I could use it. They need to get on the ball.

Does anyone know the name of that Firefox addon previously mentioned?

Edit : Never mind https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/59/

there's a way around it.

in your address bar in firefox, type about:config and hit enter

on the page that comes up, type useragent in the filter bar

of the few items that are in the list, one of them will say something like general.useragent.extra.firefox

double click that one and change the value from Firefox/3.6 to Firefox/3.0

that should let you log into amcas

if you are using ie 8, there is a button to the right of the address bar. (it looks like a sheet of paper torn in half.) This will put the browser in compatibility mode, and it should work. the button won't show up unless you are on the amcas login page. 👍

I realized it a month or so ago. I e-mailed them about it, and they responded:

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for contacting AMCAS.

For PC users, AMCAS supports the following browser versions:

o Internet Explorer 7.0

o Internet Explorer 6.0

o Internet Explorer 5.5

o Netscape 7

o Firefox 1.0.2

o Firefox 1.5 for Windows only

o Firefox 2.0

o Firefox 3.0

For Mac users, AMCAS supports the following browser versions:

o Internet Explorer 5.1.7

o Internet Explorer 5.2

o Netscape 7

o Mozilla Firefox 1.0.2

o Mozilla Firefox 1.5

o Mozilla Firefox 2.0

o Mozilla Firefox 3.0

To access Internet Explorer browser versions 5.1.7 and 5.2, please visit: oldapps.com. To access Mozilla Firefox browser versions 1.0.2, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0, please visit oldapps.com.

If you are currently using Internet Explorer 8 you can change the settings to access the AMCAS Application by following the steps below:

1. Under the "Tools" menu select, "Compatibility View Settings".

2. Select the box "Display all websites in Compatibility View"

We realize the burden that this causes some applicants and are working with our technical team to stay as up to date as possible with current technology and browsers. When a new browser becomes available, AMCAS has to do a large series of tests to ensure the integrity, security and user experience of our applications and this can take some time. This issue is noted and we continue to work on improving our options. In the meantime, you may have to try using another computer with a supported browser to complete your AMCAS application. We are very sorry for the inconvenience.

If you have any questions or if we can be of additional assistance, please contact us at [email protected] or (202) 828-0600.

I didn't really need to access the application, so I gave up, since I'm pretty sure all the computers in my house are updated, as are the computers in the library.

It should be a telling sign that you have to go to OLDAPPS.COM to find a compatible browser 🙄

if you're using the new IE, theres a button next to the address bar that says "compatibility view", step 1. click it, step 2. , step 3. profit.

I'm using 3.0 on my mac now and when I click "AMCAS 2011 Login" on this page, http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/, the page never loads bc the address keeps changing to ...cookiepass=1 or cookiepass=2 but my freaking cookies are disabled grrrr! I can work on my application for osteopathic medical schools but not MD schools though

help?:scared:

This was bugging me too. I did my AMCAS using Firefox2 (3, 3.5, 3.6 wouldn't work). But since I could use Firefox 3.5/3.6 to log in on my friend's Macbook, I thought, "Why not on mine?" Ultimately, what got it to work was going into Firefox preferences, clicking the "Show Cookies" button, searching for "amcas" and "aamc" (not sure which one made the difference) and removing all of the cookies associated with both searches. Sure, I could have done a more careful job and gone one-by-one to see which cookie(s) was the culprit...but, uh, too late. 🙂

Hope this helps!
