Trying to narrow down my resources for Step 1. Anyone use BRS physio by Costanza for dedicated review time? Is it too detailed or good enough?

I did not use it extensively but its one of the best review books for physiology. Its not cumbersome and can be read fairly quickly. You don't have to read it cover to cover.

Is it too detail? Absolutely not.

Is it good enough for physiology? YES

I own it and have read it. It's definitely not necessary despite people having raved about it. The only reason I had originally bought it was because people talked it up so much, but it's overkill quite frankly. I honestly don't think I have gotten a single additional practice question correct because of having read it. I'd recommend it if you're in MS1 and want to build foundation.

If you're within 6 months of the exam, don't waste your time: focus on FA and just a surfeit of practice questions. That's it.

Ehhh, I cannot emphasize how incredible this book is as the cornerstone for physiology and pathophysiology. I skip all of first aid physio in support of this book. I have used BRS and watched all the kaplan phys videos and annotated onto BRS...I will gladly skip First aids physio for a more superior physio source.

For example, one advantage of BRS is its nice to review a chapter right before I plunge into my pathophys section in Pathoma on the organ system...main point, FA is cool and great but its not fleshed out the way I want it and ends becoming rote memorization vs. truly understanding...thats just my 2 cents

I really liked it and plan on using it for boards. I've already read it 2-3 times for our shelf exam last semester and it ended up being pretty helpful. The practice questions are pretty decent too.

I'm hoping that it'll be a pretty quick read this spring when I start my focused board review.

Like others have stated, super overkill for the boards. If you were to focus on anything, always correlate your Physio to PathoPhysio and not just Physio alone if that makes sense.

Instead of reviewing the book in its entirety, narrow it down to a few chapters you may need to brush up on.

Maybe just stick with the major systems like Cardio, Renal, Respiratory, and GI. Knowing the physio stone cold in those sections will help you out tremendously. Layer some pathology on top of the physio as soon as you review it and you should be golden.

Practice questions solidify your studying and helps you come to logical conclusions easier when you come across them again in the future. When you understand the normal, the abnormal is easy.
