Anyone want to do share/part time residency?

I am an IM intern this year looking for someone who, like me, would also like to share a residency (eg for whatever reason,to spend more time with family, have more free time, pursue another interest, etc..) either by sharing a pgy2 spot you already have for 2007 (open to IM or diff speciaties and geographic regions) or by finding an open share - able spot.. Please pm me if you are interested or have any questions/comments..

sorry to intrude, but i'm hoping you'll enlighten me, as i've never heard of this. will programs really do this or are you trying to pave a new road?

do you get paid half as much? if so, do you have to find a second job?

i know that some programs do this -- in frieda you can look up these programs by specifying part time shared residencies..

there is website for this also: www.sharedresidency.org (you can check some sample schedules on this site ) and I have seen people who look for partners on various other sites/forums..

enlighten me...does it then take you twice as long to do the training requirements?? If not, why wouldnt everyone do this?

Who couldnt use every other week or month off??

yes of course it will take longer
but for some people it may be worth it at this particular time in their life
or those with young children, or those who would like to pursue another interest etc during this time in their life and cant afford any of this with the normal residency schedule.. dont want to drop out of medicine but would like to live a somewhat normal life during residency.. especially for those people who have a partner working and can afford to do part time - or u can work a much less stressful job in between .. time will pass before you know it .. its a great option for some ..

When considering this, keep in mind that -depending on the program- you may not necessarily boost your own popularity among your full-time colleagues, as you are might make their lives more complicated (i.e. think of scheduling). Thus, you'll want to ensure that it's as pain-free as possible for your program/colleagues, otherwise the person you are sharing your residency spot with, might end up as the only person you cope with, but somehow never get to work with ;-)
Nonetheless, some programs have started to be pretty outgoing about part-time residency spots, some programs specifically mention this possibility on their websites. So, it is definitely possible and has actually been common for several years meanwhile.

Keep in mind that these are shared spots, not "part-time." There is always a resident to do the work, it's just that 2 people share one spot (and one salary). There is not (usually) a staffing shortage and you'll be hard pressed to walk into a PD's office and tell them you want a part-time spot. The OP had it right in looking for a partner for this. Very few programs advertise the presence of shared positions, but many will accomodate you if you have someone else you want to share it with. My program has an R2 couple who had a kid late in their intern year and decided to do a shared position at least for this year so they can spend time with their kid.

As for whether it's IM only, I think you could swing this in IM, Peds, FP and maybe EM (but EM is damn near part-time anyway...I'm kidding, sort of). Nobody's going to want a Surgery resident taking 10 years to finish and I think it's not really in the culture either.

So does this mean it takes twice as long to finish your residency? What I mean is, a IM residency typically takes 3 years, would a shared IM residency take 6 years if shared all the way through?

You might be able to pull it off in 5 but don't quote me on that. You can easily fulfill ABIM requirements for BE in 2 full years (20 months of direct patient care). I don't know if anyone's tried it though. 6 years is how long it would take if fully shared. I think in reality, a lot of people share a position for a year or maybe 2.

You are of course entirely correct about the terminology, however it turns out to be "part-time" for the residents, and staffing shortages may in fact become an issue when -for whatever reason- both of the two residents sharing a spot call in sick at the same.
