Anyone whose dream school is not a top-ten?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes. My dream school is Umass Medical since it's in my home state and it's extremely cheap.

I think the reason why people's dream school tend to be top 10/top 20 is because the way schools are arranged geographically.

A lot of people like to go to big cities, which are filled with top 10/top 20 schools.

A couple of destination cities for people:

SF > UCSF
Manhattan > Columbia, Cornell, NYU, Mt.Sinai
San Diego> UCSD
LA > UCLA

Additionally, dream school changes in the cycle. When I was a college student I loved to go to HMS, when I got my gig working in UCSF I would love to attend UCSF, but for me my dream school is the best fit school that takes me.

True that, UCLA for me!

my dream school is U of A Phoenix... If I get in there I won't have to worry about selling my house for less than I owe, and my husband won't have to worry about finding a new job to support us while I go to school. 😀

My absolute dream school is Cornell, but i feel like in terms of admissions it may as well be a top 10

My dream school is UofL. I was born in Louisville, most of my family lives there, I have some friends up there, I lived in nearby WV for years, I love the good parts of the city, and more.

great school. the admissions staff is so friendly there.

Actually, my dream school is Loma Linda... I'm a Christian, and I really like the school's mission. I think it fits me better than any of the others 🙂

for me, ut southwestern. i felt totally at home there, and i love dallas.

since thats a long shot for me, i think the perfect school for me would be uthsc san antonio

My dream school was Mayo...until I interviewed at Hopkins. It was love at first site😍

Realistically though, my dream school will be the best fit out of any schools that accept me.

You will love Sinai even more when you interview there! It is a wonderful community in an unbeatable location.

Yeah, looking forward to it. BTW, JHU is top ten.😛

It looks like you'll get into some great places 🙂.

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine is my dream school because the camaraderie among students is amazing, the classes are pass/fail, they want to educate doctors to serve the under-served populations in Michigan. Not that other schools don't match these criteria, me feeling very comfortable there is what it all comes down to.

I'm with you, AdemTD. Michigan State University College of Human Medicine is my dream school. I applied EDP, and was accepted. So with God's help, my dream is a reality.

Go Green!

I don't have a "dream" school, at least not a single school. I spent a lot of time researching schools prior to applying, and I only sent secondaries to schools that I felt strongly about. So far, all but one of the schools I have interviewed at have exceeded my high pre-interview expectations.

My dream three are Vanderbilt, Pitt, and Case. They're all nicely clumped in the top 15-20 range. But in reality, I'd be happy wherever I was accepted 🙂

Sounds cliched, but so true.

Agreed, Loma Linda is the only school for me!

My Dream School has to be in Chicago, and with my stats that is either Loyola, U.I.C. Rush or Midwestern

Case Western.. Please love me back.😍

my dream school is wayne state because it's HOME and it has all the resources i could want and i will challenge myself there. and i can keep volunteering in the same awesome places i'm at now.

if i had any chance of getting in, my second dream school is pritzker. michigan would be nice too because i would still be near detroit, and ann arbor has some unique places that i can't find anywhere else in the area, but i doubt that they would take me!

i also love georgetown, and the DC area in general.

My dream school is USUHS and they will be calling the lucky ones on Oct 16 with the good news. Needless to say I will be sitting by the phone hoping for that call.

We all know what you will be doing, obviously.

Georgetown for me. It's realistic for my stats, and I loved it when I interviewed there. Plus the DC area rocks.

Dear xms3,

omg get over urself

Love,

I felt the same way originally after looking at the website, but upon visiting the school it was definitely a bit more underwhelming than I expected. It was a little stuffy -- maybe that's the Ivy League atmosphere more than anything -- and the actual med school facilities and students weren't particularly endearing.

Then gain, I am permanently jaded by my experience at U of Michigan. The respect and hospitality at the interview, the extreme happiness of their students, the flexibility and support they provide, and the ideal location of Ann Arbor (smallish city, liberal college town) make it my first choice as it stands now. It's just outside of the top 10, too! I also think I'm probably going to like Mayo a lot when I interview there, but why would I continue to profess my love for UCSF if they haven't shown any reciprocation? :-\

The Top 10 med schools may be famous names and carry a lot of prestige, but also keep in mind that they've graduated many leaders in medicine who have created the problems weighing down our current system. Many of them focus on research grants and competition to the detriment of teaching students to be compassionate and grounded doctors, and the type of people you'll be exposed to at those schools will likely persuade you to go after biomedical research or specialization rather than primary care. The student population themselves may be self selected to be obnoxiously competitive and out of touch, as well...I know I don't want to enter this part of my career in that environment. I want a med school that is academically rigorous but also helps me preserve my humanity and still have a life, and with other students that have those same goals.

Just because U of M is 11th doesn't make it some how majestically different than the top 10. Further, I think you are generalizing based on insufficient data (some top 10 schools are pass fail unranked, my school started the white coat ceremony years ago with the sole goal of promoting humanism and medicine, Harvard has a good 3rd or more of their class that goes into primary care, medical grants have very little to do with the education of medical students in classrooms, etc) and the assumption that our medical system was caused by physicians.

Hmm, if I could get in anywhere, I think I would either pick University of Minnesota (I did undergrad there back in the day) or Mayo Clinic (been there a lot as both a patient and employee, I like the academic atmosphere). I don't really know anything about rankings; are either of those top ten schools?

Am I the only one that doesn't really have a top choice? I had one, but they have quickly fallen off (imo) as I see and visit other schools :/ The way things are going, I have no clue who I'm going to like best until after interviews...

WHEN it merges with Rice...tuition is going to up up and awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

why? Rice is the cheapest top private school tuition-wise. I don't see why they wouldn't keep that trend.

i would love to go to medical college of georgia. It is my state school, and I've lived here all my life. Can't imagine going somewhere else. Also, I know a lot of people there, so that's another plus.
