Hey All,

I have searched the forums, and I have seen some people with success at the Rutgers NB campus post bac, but it does not appear many people have written about the program at RU Newark.

I spoke with the professor who runs the program, and he seemed very interested in his students, and their progress. He also boasted about the close relationship he has with the dean of UMDNJ - Newark. The classes are of the same quality, and in the end it comes down to the committee letter. He mentioned one benefit of the Newark program is his specific involvement, and genuine interest in each student. This is not to say NB does not have this, however, I have read some people stating the post bac advisor is not great.

Has anyone gone to RU Newark, or is now attending? Any feedback on this speicific program would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hey businessmd06,

I was just wondering if you could pass on the email or some contact info for the Rutgers - Newark professor you spoke with. I've been trying to get in touch with some folks there, but have had no luck at all.

Thanks in advance!

im assuming the deadline has passed for this program...?

Hello businessmd06,

I'm interested in the postbac program being offered at Rutgers- Newark. It has been difficult finding information about this specific program. Can you please post some information regarding to the program? Is it a enhancement or career changing program?

-Thank you

Hey everyone,

I wanted to bump this thread because I too am having some trouble finding info about the Rutgers Newark Post-Bac. Anyone with some experience mind sharing?

Thanks!!

I did the informal (grade boosting) rutgers newark post-bacc. Worked out flawlessly for me. PM me with questions. I have a big exam coming up but will get back to you by end of next weekend

I'm just wondering what you mean by working flawlessly? What was your GPA going into the program and what is it now? Any details would be very helpful. Thanks!

Busy until Wednesday - I'll edit this post then with details and you can ask me any questions you have

By "working flawlessly", I mean I accomplished all the goals I could have hoped to accomplish in a post-bacc. The pre-health dean was very open to meeting and advising, and he told me I seemed to be much more mature and driven person than the average pre-med student - and having had success in the coursework there he will be writing me a fantastic committee letter. Staying on the topic of letters, I received LOR's from three bio professors after taking classes with them (and I could have asked for more if I needed them) - one being the head of the biology department (who teaches cell biology).

I also got an A in all but one class I took. Unfortunately, my GPA was pretty abominable to start - 2.59. Now it's 2.84. I'm now taking classes with med students at an SMP and hope to get honors in my classes. Keep in mind I did the program as a "GPA enhancement" post-bacc, while I knew people who did this as a structured post-bacc where they took the pre-requs and were eligible for linkage into NJMS

I am currently completing the full deal post-bacc at Rutgers Newark. I also have just been accepted into medical school. I have many thoughts on the program and the application process as a whole. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Bumping this in case anyone is thinking about the program and has questions

I have a couple questions about the program, and special masters programs in general.

I was planning on applying for medical school this year (DO and MD), but due to late letters, delayed transcript, and my poor personal statement, I decided to hold off. My stats are not great, but not terrible either. 27 mcat, 3.55 gpa, 3.5 science, and all the typical ECs.

I'm interested in the program mainly because I want to be doing something productive the following year. I am already taking a gap year(graduated in may 2010), and am completely miserable. Working as a pharm tech at CVS for min wage is not what I had in mind 🙂

I am an NJ resident and would really like to get into UMDNJ for medical school, whether DO or MD.

So a couple questions really:

1.) Is it risky enrolling in this program, since my gpa is not very low?
2.) What does the time line as far as applications go?
3.) Can I use the same personal statement, and recommendations as I would for medical school, or does it have to be program specific?
4.) Where can I get more info? I haven't had much luck on the website
5.) Lastly, for anyone who has done this program, what are your overall impressions.
6.) Do I stand a reasonable chance of getting in at this late in the year?

I just want to be back in school already.

It might be a good idea for you to at least take a couple classes part time while working. In general, the classes at Rutgers Newark are not hard (I got a 3.9 after a 2.6 in undergrad). It is certainly less of a risk for you to enroll in this program than it would be to do a SMP.
2. It's pretty easy to get accepted, I think I applied in december or january, and i hadn't heard back in march, so i went to the admissions office during my spring break and told them I had been in touch with the prehealth office and we had a plan for me to be successful at rutgers newark and end up at med school - they accepted me on the spot. I'd contat Dr. Maiello (the prehealth advisor) if I were you to let him know you're interested and use your knowing him as leverage to get yourself accepted quick

3. Use pretty much your same PS, and use the same recs. Rutgers newark is a second tier campus of a state school, admissions isn't too difficult. you'll come off better than the vast majority of their applicants

4. Dr. Maiello is the person to contact with questions, otherwise the websites are your only bet. http://newarkbioweb.rutgers.edu/prehealth/ and http://newarkbioweb.rutgers.edu/department/

5. This program was great for me. To be honest, the competition isn't the most difficult at RU-N, so as a motivated premed on my last legs, I killed everything. I could have collected 5 impressive LOR's, settled for three science and i'm going to end up using 2 of them. Interestingly enough, I did also learn a lot and develop a strong bio background.

6. Yes. You can apply as a second degree student (recommended by dr. maiello and by me, because then you will be able to register for classes when everyone else does), or even as a non-degree seeking student. It is not hard to be admitted through either of those paths

If anyone ever uses this thread as advice regarding the program- always sign up as a second degree student, not a non-matriculating student

MPORTANT NEWS REGARDING FALL 2011 REGISTRATION

Beginning with the fall 2011 semester, FASN will restrict enrollment in all on-campus NCAS courses to matriculated Rutgers students. This action is necessary in order to give first preference to students who have been admitted as candidates to Rutgers degree programs. The enrollment restriction on non-matriculated students will not apply to Summer and Winter Session, to on-line courses, or to courses offered at off-campus locations.

Pending budget and enrollment decisions, FASN currently plans to lift the restriction and allow non-matriculating students to register for NCAS Fall 2011 courses later in the summer.
