It seems that everyone has done at least 5 years of hospital volunteering and served in at least 3 developing countries. I admire you guys who did that but are there any of you who don't have great ECs and applying this summer. Also, last year's applicants without incredible ECs, how did you do in the process?

i applied last year with not-so-stellar ec's. i'd spent two summers working in an OR and a year in a research lab, although that was for my thesis so technically counted as a class. other than that, i had a few years of mentoring students, though that involved very little actual work on my part, and i never really stuck with my other ec's longer than a semester or two. come to think of it, i had horrible ec's. but i had good grades and mcats, and i got into four good schools (top 25ish, i think, one top 10) before i withdrew from the rest of them. there are definitely some schools that put emphasis on ec's, but there are also some that don't worry about them too much.

My ec's were average i'd say... two summers of hospital volunteering, EMT certified, shadowing during summer and 2 yrs or research. I've been accepted to 2 schools (not top 50) and waitlisted at 4 (2 of them top 25). As long as you've done something medically related and have a good reason for going to med school, you should be fine.
