After being in the pre-clinic for four hours with 100 highspeeds going I get a horrible ringing in my ear. Is anyone else worried about their hearing? Does anyone wear earplugs in lab?

no because now Ill be sure to have ear plugs handy if needed. ty.

high pitch hearing loss is one of dentistry's hazards. feel free to wear ear plugs.

at least we can wear ear plugs for hearing loss.

i'm more worried about my vision.. hope my eyesight doesn't get much worse after dental school :xf:

you can actually get custom made earplugs that have the ability to block out the high freequencies that cause the ringing in your ears - kind of a reverse effect of hearing aids.

Navy, where can we find these?

You can probably get them at an audiologist.

i'd be more worried about wear and tear on your neck and back. i'd also be more worried about stuff that happens to your hands and wrists..like arthritis or carpal tunnel. nowadays you can get surgery to fix carpal tunnel syndrome. but still...

I always just use my ipod. Since sound waves aren't additive the music is able to drone out the buzzing. Less dorky than ear plugs and more fun.

I know some of my classmates use them. I'll see where they got them done.

This would be a great gift for a friend I know who us headed off to dschool. Yes please let us know! And thanks in advance!

I'd also like to know Navy.
Yes, Navy's right. We were referred to an audiology clinic within the same building our first year in pre-clinic if we were interested in having custom-fit earplugs. (they dampen the noise across the board and are often used for those that are sound techs for bands, etc.) They cost about $150-180 and you can pick the color you want. They also have different levels of dampening. I bought some but soon found that I really liked to hear the sound of the handpiece and quit wearing them at the risk of losing my hearing in the future 🙁 You can still hear everything just quieter, but it wasn't good enough for me. weird, i know. The process takes about 15-30 min. Really simple. They pack this thing in your ear, which actually kind of hurt a little--weird sensation. Then they squirt something like a VPS impression material in your ear and then let it set and pull it out.

As far as the way the look...they are probably less visible than the store kind as they are recessed slightly inside the ear. Then about the ipod comment, I know at my school they would not allow that, especially when treating patients. But then again, every school's different.

Hope that helps.
